Death of a Father

Posted by Kevin Brown on December 8, 2009

Daughter, Wife, Mother, Warrior!

Kathy Marticello, our friend and neighbor here in the small riverside community of Palmyra, NJ, lost her Father last week. Kathy is the mother of Donnie and Chuckey and wife of Don Marticello, the neighborhood handy man. She has fought the good fight to keep her father alive, and she almost twice rescued her father from the dregs of terminal, stage 4 cancer, but was unable to stop a medical system that often destroys the lives it’s supposed to protect!

In April, Kathy’s father was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer and was told that he had no hope, and wouldn’t live till Labor day. His primary doctor told him that he might as well try something alternative because he was so far gone, that he didn’t have a treatment that could help. This was the best advice a doctor could give- as he was free to put his hope in something other than modern drugs or surgery!

Enter the Matrix

It was that very week, that Kathy had just finished reading The Liberation Diet, that I had given to Don and Kathy. She came rushing over to my house and asked, “Do you think this Liberation Diet can help my father’s stage 4 cancer?” I told her, well, God does all the healing, but it is always a good idea to eat real food the way God intended, and follow the healthy protocols laid out in the book. “Nothing but good can come from improved diet,” I said sympathetically to her, as I knew she needed some hope and truly this was a small but viable chance for relief.

Kathy’s father was in great pain from the cancer, so much so that he was on morphine, a very powerful pain reliever with just as powerful side affects.

The greatest test still lied ahead, as Kathy had to convince her father, that almost everything he knew about diet was wrong, and he had to trust her for information that his life depended on. We also needed to find a source for real food near him, so his family could regularly obtain the life saving nourishment.

Enter Weston Price

As a chapter leader with the Weston Price Foundation, a non profit nutrition organization from DC, I had knowledge of the RealMilk.com website, where I could find a listing of sources of real food across the country. More importantly, I was able to contact a woman named Carrie Hahn, a chapter leader from the Pittsburgh PA. area, who happened to live near Kathy’s father, and she quickly moved into action to help us obtain the nutrient dense food he so desperately needed.

Kathy’s father had been a borderline diabetic, and had a long history of eating poorly. It would be difficult for him to begin to change his eating pattern at this point in his life, but his wife and daughter were determined to convince him that this was his only real hope.

Scientifically Speaking

Kathy Marticello is a retired molecular biologist, who had formerly worked in the pharmaceutical industry, where her specific specialty had been cancer research. Kathy, spurred on by the information she read in the Liberation Diet, researched further and further until she came to a profound simple truth- cancer is fed by sugar!

Cancer cells have 10 times more glucose (sugar) receptors than normal cells! In other words SUGAR FEEDS CANCER! This meant that eating a low sugar, (by modern standards) normal-carb diet would not only help with the diabetes issue her father was facing, but would help starve the cancer cells and give her father a fighting chance. The protocols of the Liberation Diet of nutrient-dense, less sugar, less frequent meals, with a healthy dose of supplements such as Xango and Cod Liver Oil, seemed to be just what the doctor ordered.

The Liberation Has Begun!

Kathy’s father, with God’s help, began to follow the Liberation program, and with encouragement from her family, his health quickly improved. In about 4 weeks his pain had subsided so much that he no longer needed the dreaded morphine! He was now drug free and working outside again in the warm, western Pennsylvania sunshine, and after many years of poor health, he was beginning to make it back from the edge of death.

Happy Days!

It was good days and nights in June as we received the encouraging reports of Kathy’s fathers’ improved health, we have seen great things happen, so we are not too shocked- but part of our reward is knowing we were able to do some good to others. And this was indeed a great good!

The Fall From Grace

In mid-July Kathy’s father had an appointment with a different doctor for some reason I never did find out. He told the doctor of his great progress, and how his healthy eating program seemed to make all the difference.

Unfortunately, the doctor didn’t see it that way; he didn’t even let well enough be and just encourage Kathy’s father with a “that’s great”. This doctor told him that eating sugar was not the issue at all, and that he, in his advanced age, might as well go ahead and have a cookie or whatever he liked, it would make no difference!

How terrible was the advice of this so-called “physician”, as it was difficult enough for a man with many years of bad eating habits to abstain from the processed chemicals which had almost already killed him, but when this doctor got into his head, it was all over for Kathy’s father.

Bad Time for Family

We received the reports around labor day and were saddened and angered at what had transpired! We knew how difficult it was mentally, to begin to eat right, when you have been eating poorly for 70 years, and soon Kathy’s father had all the terrible pain and weakness return to him. The doctors now told him he should do some radiation treatments, although in his weakened condition this was very risky! What a mess of despair, and an awful place for anyone’s beloved father to be!

Kathy – Comes off the Mat Swinging

Kathy Marticello is one of the nicest people you would ever want to meet – kind, patient, a den mother for the neighborhood children, gentle to all. But she was now fighting mad! She was on the phone with every medical person involved with her father, and was giving them an earful! She railed on staff that tried to feed her father Ensure, the horrible fake food substitute being given to the elderly! She was determined not to give up!

Dad – Wake UP!

Through all this anguish, and through Kathy’s incredible, infatigable effort, her father woke up, and announced, “I will try to eat healthy again! I will follow he Liberation Diet, I will take my supplements, and won’t take any more medications.” Her father even got off his dreaded morphine again and began to follow the program just as before. Although now he was very ill, and mentally exhausted- wouldn’t you know it- he started to improve.

Almost Hollywood Ending

This might be one of the most wonderful stories about success against cancer had it not been for the ending. Although Kathy’s father was starting to improve greatly again, he contracted a respiratory infection that caused him to go to the hospital. He was there a few days, and (eating Real Food that Kathy insisted be allowed in), was improving nicely, up and walking around, and scheduled to be released in a couple of days. That evening, he had some difficulty breathing, and the night-shift nurse decided that what he needed was some morphine! Her fathers’s primary physician had specifically noted not to give him morphine as he was having problems with it. It was the easiest thing to administer, and in a system that has a low value of human life, this was the obvious choice.

Unfortunately, the morphine dropped his blood pressure too low and he died!

Death of a Father

Just another dead body in a hospital, but to a family, a sacred, human life. And the beloved husband and father who was fighting a monster bigger than Goliath- the modern medical system. A system that will use almost any means of treatment except the safe, healthy ones. Anything profitable, as long as it doesn’t involve eating safe, natural foods or  not giving a drug to a patient – when the side effect of the drug might be DEATH!

Just another medical mistake…. just another death of a father.

My condolences to Kathy. What a bitter sweet story. This too happened to my mother and father who both died of cancer. Their doctors were absolutely disinterested in hearing anything that had to do with nutrition. If fact, they belittled it. To me, it’s malpractice – criminal in fact.
