Study fails to link saturated fat, heart disease

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) – The saturated fat found mainly in meat and dairy products has a bad reputation, but a new analysis of published studies finds no clear link between people’s intake of saturated fat and their risk of developing heart disease.

Health

Research has shown that saturated fat can raise blood levels of “bad” LDL cholesterol, and elevated LDL is a risk factor for heart disease and stroke. Because of this, experts generally advise people to limit their intake of fatty meat, butter and full-fat dairy.

The American Heart Association (AHA) suggests that adults get no more than 7 percent of their daily calories from the fat; for someone who eats 2,000 calories a day, that translates into fewer than 16 grams of saturated fat per day.

But in the new analysis, which combined the results of 21 previous studies, researchers found no clear evidence that higher saturated fat intakes led to higher risks of heart disease or stroke.

The findings, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, may sound like good news for steak lovers, but a past AHA president cautioned against “over interpreting” the results.

“No one is saying that some saturated fat is going to harm you…people should enjoy their food,” said Dr. Robert H. Eckel, a professor of medicine at the University of Colorado School of Medicine in Denver.

But, he pointed out, many studies have shown that dietary saturated fat can raise people’s cholesterol, and the new analysis is not going to change recommendations to keep saturated fat intake in check.

Perhaps more importantly, though, Eckel said that the thinking on diet and heart health is moving away from a focus on single nutrients and toward “dietary patterns.”

A number of studies have linked the so-called Western diet to greater heart disease risks; that diet pattern is defined as one high in red and processed meats and saturated fats — but also high in sweets and other refined carbohydrates like white bread.

On the other hand, diets described as Mediterranean or “prudent” — generally high in fruits and vegetables, whole grains, fish, unsaturated fats from vegetable oil — may help lower the risk of heart disease and stroke.

It’s that type of eating pattern that people should strive for, Eckel said.

For the current study, researchers led by Dr. Ronald M. Krauss, of the Children’s Hospital Oakland Research Center in California, pooled data from 21 studies that included a total of nearly 348,000 adults.

Participants, who were generally healthy to start, were surveyed about their diet habits and then followed for anywhere from five to 23 years. Over that time, 11,000 developed heart disease or suffered a stroke.

Overall, Krauss and his colleagues found, there was no difference in the risks of heart disease and stroke between people with the lowest and highest intakes of saturated fat.

The analysis included what are known as epidemiological studies — where the researchers looked for associations between people’s reported diet habits and their risk of heart disease and stroke. These types of studies have inherent limitations, like depending on people’s recollection of their eating habits.

In addition, the study could not address whether saturated fat intake has different effects on heart disease and stroke risk for different age groups. Nor could it look at the effects of replacing saturated fat in the diet with polyunsaturated fats — like those found in vegetable oils and fish — or with carbohydrates.

Some other studies, the researchers write, have shown that consuming polyunsaturated fats in place of saturated ones may lower heart disease risk.

Comment – Almost the whole truth here, no implication that saturated fat makes you healthy, and of couse the ADA has to dispute the findings, however we are at least getting a half truth.

GENETICALLY MODIFIED ALFALFA

Posted by Kevin Brown on February 5, 2010

ACTION ALERT ON GENETICALLY MODIFIED ALFALFA

Now is your chance to demand that USDA protect food from contamination by genetically engineered (GE) alfalfa!  USDA just released its draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) on GE alfalfa and comments are due February 16, 2010.

TELL USDA NOT TO APPROVE MONSANTO’S GE ALFALFA

In the EIS, USDA claims that there is no evidence that consumers care about GE contamination of organic alfalfa. But while consumers might not eat alfalfa directly, alfalfa is a major feed for cows and other livestock.  There have been no studies showing that GE alfalfa is safe for feeding to livestock or what effect feeding GE-alfalfa has on the meat or milk from such animals.  Because of the risk of contamination of non-GE crops, approval of GE alfalfa could ultimately make it impossible for farmers to find GE-free sources for their livestock.

Protect your milk and meat by commenting now!  Below are some recommended talking points.

COMMENTS ARE DUE FEBRUARY 16, 2010

HOW TO SUBMIT COMMENTS

1) Submit comments online through the government website:  Go to http://www.regulations.gov/search/Regs/home.html#documentDetail?R=0900006480a6b7a1
Click on “submit comment” (look at the upper right-hand corner of the box)

2) You can also submit comments through the Center for Food Safety’s website, http://ga3.org/campaign/alfalfaEIS

3) For written, mailed comments, send two copies to: Docket No. APHIS-2007-0044, Regulatory Analysis and Development, PPD, APHIS, Station 3A-03.8, 4700 River Road Unit 118, Riverdale, MD 20737-1238. Please state that your comment refers to Docket No. APHIS-2007-0044.

TALKING POINTS
–As a consumer, you do not want to buy GE-alfalfa-derived meat and dairy products.  USDA claims that consumers will not be harmed by the approval of GE alfalfa, but has not conducted studies of the effects of feeding GE alfalfa to livestock.

–It is wrong to leave farmers, whether organic or conventional, vulnerable to contamination of their crops.  Alfalfa is open-pollinated by bees. With bees traveling 4 to 6 miles, they can potentially spread the patented, foreign DNA to distant conventional and organic crops. The potential for biological contamination from a neighbor’s field, even miles away, threatens the livelihood of organic farmers, dairies, and other livestock producers. The farmers may also be subject to harassment by Monsanto if Monsanto’s investigators find DNA from GE alfalfa mixed in with the farmer’s crops.

–GE alfalfa would be the first perennial crop to be approved for genetic modification and release.  GE-contaminated plants could be scattered along the roadsides and in fields, living and producing more GE-contaminated pollen for years.

–Monsanto’s business practices do NOT protect farmers from contamination.  USDA claims that Monsanto’s seed contracts require measures sufficient to prevent GE contamination.  But USDA is ignoring the evidence of widespread GE contamination of canola, soy, and corn.

–GE alfalfa would significantly increase pesticide use, harming both human health and the environment. USDA admits (correctly) that introduction of Roundup Ready alfalfa will increase Roundup use. However, USDA’s claims that the increase is not significant and that Roundup will replace other, more toxic herbicides are wrong and unsupported by any evidence.

–USDA should NOT approve genetically engineered crops that benefit one large company at the expense of family farms.  USDA concludes that GE alfalfa will cause production to shift to larger farms (that can afford built-in isolation distances) and conventional growers who are not threatened by GE contamination, but that these economic shifts are not significant.  This is a continuation of the “get big or get out” policy that has caused myriad problems over the last several decades, and it needs to stop!

A Request for Oprah

Posted by Kevin Brown on February 5, 2010

Dear Oprah,

I envision you, or your staff, may have already heard from others letting you know about the Weston A. Price Foundation, and/or the book Nourishing Traditions by author Sally Fallon Morell.  Having recently seen Michael Pollan on your show, I am inspired to write in order to encourage you to expand upon the important conversation you’ve begun.  I wholeheartedly applaud you for acknowledging our collective need for a food revolution and for your personal commitment to considering where your food is coming from with awareness.

I know you have a school of girls you consider to be your daughters and as such, I imagine that the topic of nourishing our children will be of great interest to you.  I served as a learning specialist in private practice for a number of years before I founded the Nourishing Our Children campaign in 2005.  I had a strong sense that the students in my private practice, while very well–fed, were lacking in vital nutrients.  I strongly suspected that they may have been malnourished rather than learning disabled.  As a result, I closed my private practice to devote myself to the cause of educating and inspiring parents to return to the whole, natural foods that have produced generation after generation of healthy children.

Our campaign has a presentation that we give to parents groups on the topic of Timeless Principles for Supporting Learning, Behavior and Health Through Optimal Nutrition. We have distributed our educational materials to well over 500 who are giving the presentation in their communities all over the United States, as well as in Canada, Brazil, Iceland, and Australia.

Some of the topics covered are topics I have not yet heard discussed on your show, such as raw milk, the benefits and necessity of saturated fats, the ploy of soy, and the dangers of toxic grains in most breakfast cereals.  These topics would expand upon and deepen the dialogue on food that you’ve begun.  Did you know that butter is a traditional fat that has nourished healthy population groups throughout the globe for thousands of years?  We have a whole section on the Skinny on Fat.  You may be surprised to learn that you may eat fat, and lose fat!  You can learn some additional facts that you may not know about your diet here – Dietary Wisdom.

I would love you to feature the research of Weston A. Price, and the work of those who have followed in his footsteps, on your show and/or in your magazine.  I encourage you to interview Sally Fallon Morell, the Founder and President of The Weston A. Price Foundation, to learn about wise traditions in food, farming and the healing arts.

Nourishing Our Children

I am opening up this request to others in the larger community to express their similar desire to have you expand upon the topic of real food.

You’ll find their comments below.

I greatly appreciate you considering our request – we hope to talk with you soon!

Truly,

You Have Limitless Potential!

Posted by Debbie Wysocki on February 5, 2010

It’s Fabulous Friday and my kids are excited . . .it’s a Friday with no school.

Parent Teacher Conference Day . . . and I’m happy to report both kids brought home all ‘As’ so we’ll
be celebrating with lunch and a movie!
It’s importance to celebrate your successes in life.

Today’s Secret Edge for Exceptional Living Tip comes from Dr. John Maxwell with a little commentary

Dr. John Maxwell & Debbie Wysocki

thrown in from me.

KNOWING YOUR PURPOSE

Everyone has his own specific vocation or mission in life.  Each of us has a purpose for which we
were created.  Our responsibility — and our greatest joy — is to identify it.

Maxwell gives us some questions to assist your in finding your purpose:

1.  For what are you searching?  All of us have a strong desire buried in our hearts — something
that speaks to your deepest thoughts and feelings.  Something that FIRES US UP.

2.  Why were you created? What are your unique abilities?  What resources are available to you?
You must be objective. . . and this is no time to be humble.

3.  Do you believe in your potential?  If you don’t believe you have potential, you will never try to
reach it.

This is kind of like Henry Ford’s quote ”Think you can, think you can’t, either way you’re right.’

Here’s another quote that really makes me go hmmm

‘Do what you can, with what you have, where you are.’
   ~ President Theodore Roosevelt

4.  When do YOU start?  Do you have to ask?  NOW!

Rick Warren has written a best-seller called the Purpose Driven Life for further reading about exploring your purpose.

Each of us has our own definition of success, but I like this one:

Growing to our potential!
We have nearly limitless potential, yet too few of us ever try to reach it.  If you don’t take the time
to think about what gifts you’ve been given and what you want create with your gifts, you could end up
bouncing around like a basketball being dribbled by me (FYI, I am completely uncoordinated with round objects
called balls).

One last quote . . .

‘We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.’
   ~Winston Churchill

Have an amazing weekend!
