International Raw Milk Symposium

Posted by Kevin Brown on February 21, 2010

2nd Annual International Raw Milk Symposium

April, 10, 2010 -Madison, Wisconsin

Sponsored by the Farm-to-Consumer Foundation.

Invited Speakers – Sally Fallon Morell, Michael Schmidt, Mark McAfee, Ted Beals, M.D., David Gumpert, Tim Wightman, Dr. Ton Barrs, Sylvia Onusic, Ph.D., Fund attorney and more.

MESSAGE FROM TIM WIGHTMAN, SYMPOSIUM CHAIRMAN
Last year, in Toronto, the inaugural International Raw Milk Symposium created awareness about the problems that lie ahead for raw milk farmers and consumers in the years to come.
The 2nd annual International Raw Milk Symposium, Saturday, April 10, 2010 in Madison, Wisconsin at the Monona Terrace Community & Convention Center, will build on that foundation and focus on our need to work intelligently and to work together. We’ll also celebrate our successes and gather strength from our on-going challenges.
Since the last symposium, we’ve witnessed Michael Schmidt’s cow-share model triumph in the Canadian courts, even as the USA courts lag behind in the raw milk Dark Ages.
That very cow-share model was seeded in Wisconsin eleven years ago on my farm, after which DATCP took action against my farm. . .  but not my will to prevail, evolve, outwit and thrive.
Now, eleven years later, raw milk farmers in Wisconsin are again in turmoil. I can’t help but wonder what new, inventive ideas will be inculcated in this perfect storm of DATCP aggressiveness and farmer inventiveness that we’ll see harvested in the decade to come.

Fortunately, this time around, farmers have help! In this last decade we’ve witnessed the rise of one million angry raw milk moms & dads – passionate consumers who will sign share contracts, organize milk clubs and cow-pools, share assets, petition lawmakers and give witness in court on our behalf and in support of raw milk freedom of choice.
So, we feel the climate in Wisconsin is creating the perfect backdrop for our work at this conference. It’s a perfect time for us to come together. As farmers and consumers, we know there is strength in diversity, and we recognize the fine line between diversity and divisiveness.

We are wise stewards of the earth. Now, let us be even wiser stewards of this raw milk movement and create a sustainable, inter-related, symbiotic, synergistic, diversified community of farmers, consumers and co-producers. Together we will create meaningful change and preserve freedom of choice for all.

No small thing we are doing here. Now, let’s get to it. See you there!
Look for more details and registration soon from the Farm-to-Consumer Foundation.

What is Real Food?

Posted by Kevin Brown on February 19, 2010

In the Beginning… there was FOOD…

What is Real Food?

This is an incredibly important question, and one that our forefathers did not have to face. Since the beginning of time, all mankind has eaten Real Food, until the development of fake food in the late 19th century. Our ancestors knew what was healthy, and from generation to generation taught their families what was good and wholesome.

Artificial, or processed food soon realized that they could gain market share from the Real Food purveyors (Farmers) by attacking Real Food through fraudulent clinical studies saying Real Food was dangerous, to using corporate power to control the media information about the safety of fake food and the dangers of Real Food, to controlling government officials, to the point that in many states, it is LEGAL to buy marijuana, whiskey, cigarettes, etc, but NOT LEGAL to buy whole fresh MILK!

Processed food corporations realized that Real Food did not have the financial wherewithal to rebuke the obscene statements and accusations made against them by the very profitable fake food industry! Real Food has for all intents and purposes become a whipping boy for the companies that want to plunder their customers to their end! The incredibly successful job of brainwashing a nation into believing Real Food is evil is just now becoming realized as chronic disease and obesity crush our once healthy nation.

Because of this fact, we need to re-program our nation that Real Food is not only safe and healthy, it is truly the only safe and healthy thing to eat! Eating anything other is taking our life in our hands! Getting solid information about Real food such as this Liberation Wellness product is a good start, but also avoiding getting your health information from the media is critical!

Real Food is designed by our creator for our health and vitality! In simple terms, the food God made is healthy, and once man gets involved, it becomes corrupt! Unfortunately, it is not as simple as that, as all things natural are not necessarily safe to eat! For example, carrots are natural, but so also is poison ivy and arsenic. Most vegetables and grains actually need to be processed in order to be safe to eat, but the traditional methods that make food truly healthy and digestible are too costly for food manufactures who clearly do not care about the health of their customers when it conflicts with their bottom line. Fresh milk for instance is an extremely safe food and needs no processing and if refrigerated can stay fresh for 2 weeks or longer! Grains on the other hand need soaking or sprouting and delicate care to make the end product safe.

When we go to the supermarket, we find industrial versions of Real Food (impostors) pasteurized milk (processed) that is not healthy for humans, as well as bread processed improperly which can have a devastating effect on human health! These products almost always say they are “Healthy” or “Organic”, but are neither!

My first advice is to find a farmer who is doing dairy correctly, there you can start with the great basics of Real Food, milk, butter, eggs, etc, and often he will have cheese and meat and some fermented foods made in the traditional way. If you start with this foundation of Real Food, you will begin to depend less and less on the industrial foods, and will start feeling the great health benefit of eating Real Food. Sometimes you might get fooled along the way, but so have all of us for many years, so now we are empowering you with incredible information that can change your health and life!

There is a journey to begin eating like a human being, and your journey often begins at the farm!

Accomplishment List Vs. To Do List

Posted by Debbie Wysocki on February 19, 2010

What will you accomplish — wouldn’t it be more fun to have an Accomplishment list than a  To Do List?
We all have the same amount of time each day — it’s how we spend it that makes the difference in our results.

86,400

Seconds that is — that’s how many we all get to spend each day.

How do you spend each of your days?

Do you put first things first?

Are you FIRED UP?

Do your activities move your towards where your want to go OR are they just ‘busy’ work.  Sometimes, it’s better
to say NO or delegate.

Is your life full of ‘juicy’ relationships?  You have to make time!

Do you bless others each day?

Do you go to bed each night full of gratitude?
At the end of the day (like the end of the month), there’s an accounting of sorts.  Where did the day go?
What is on that accomplishment list of yours (aka a to do list that is crossed off).

It’s easy to get side-tracked–we all do it–our goal is for you to have more accomplishments an more fun!

***

My friend Phil Humbert shares some of his observations below about successful people and how they ‘Thrive in a Chaotic World’
and are able to ‘Accomplish More’

They seem comfortable, challenged, even exhilarated by chaos, and yet they maintain balance and tranquility in their lives.
It’s a amazing set of skills!

The most effective people seem to thrive in a world of chaos and constant change. They know that results are based on
intelligent action and focused effort, while they develop superb skills to “play and win” in a chaotic, often contradictory world.

They are unusually comfortable with ambiguity.

They know they will never have enough information. They know the rules are often out of date before they are even published,
and yet they thrive.

In the midst of chaos, they go quietly about their business.  When others are losing control, they remain calm. When others panic,
they have a cup of tea and contemplate their next strategic move.  They often move quickly, but always with a sense of confidence,
power and grace. How can this be?
Several things are necessary to thrive in the midst of chaos:

1. Exceptional boundaries.
Winners close their doors and ignore disruptions.   They turn off the phone and claim their space.
They know where they are going and tolerate few distractions.

2.  Exceptional vision.
Winners know their priorities and their desired outcomes.   They know what they want and they can see, taste, smell
and almost touch their results in advance. They have goals  and tasks rather than mere hopes or wishes.

3.  Exceptional self-direction.
Winners are in charge of their lives and chaos around them is just that — other people’s chaos swirling around them,
while they maintain an inner calm. They are not lost or confused about their values, their priorities, their
direction or their most important daily tasks.

4.  Exceptional optimism.
They see chaos as opportunity.  Chaos “stirs the pot” and opens doors. Rather than annoying or frustrating them,
they love it! On a wild and windy day, a rainbow may appear at any moment and they are eager to welcome it.

5.  Exceptional Reserves.
They take care of themselves. They eat well, rest often, save and invest wisely and when opportunity knocks, they
are waiting to answer the door. They operate from strength and stability, while a chaotic world wreaks havoc on the competition.

6.  Exceptional response-ability.
Rather than reacting from stress, anger, fear or anxiety, they see a magnificent, ever-changing world and respond
quickly to once-in-a- lifetime opportunities.   “Desperate” people react; winners respond.

John Lennon observed that

“life is what happens while you were making other plans.”

Do you think life is going to wait until you’re ready?  I’ve found that the stars rarely line up for perfect timing.

Successful people from all walks of life learn to adapt and thrive on the constant and never ending chaos.  They seize the
opportunities at hand.

This applies to moms, employees, entrepreneurs, students — yes anyone reading who wants to make their mark.  Don’t think you
have to be a CEO to have an ‘ACCOMPLISHMENT LIST.’

Free to Eat

Posted by Annette Presley on February 18, 2010

Guilt Free Eating

The Bible has some great words of wisdom for right thinking that we can apply to eating.  Romans 3:20b says, “through the law, we become conscious of sin,” and Romans. 7:5 says that sinful passions are aroused by the law.  How does this apply to what we eat?

We view eating chocolate, for example, as sinful and so we set up laws to prevent us from eating chocolate.  What we haven’t realized is the laws don’t stop us from indulging in our favorite chocolate bar.  On the contrary, the more we are told not to eat the chocolate bar, the more we desire it.  We want it and we want it now.  We become consumed with the “sin” of eating the chocolate bar.  We resist, but eventually, the desire overpowers us and we indulge our desire to eat the chocolate.  We enjoy the chocolate, but when it is traveling down the esophagus, we get that guilty feeling.

Guilt is paralyzing.  Guilt is unforgiving.  Guilt dwells in the past and prevents us from moving on.  So, the law that says, “Thou shalt not eat chocolate” puts a desire in us to eat the chocolate and then makes us feel guilty for eating it, putting us on an endless cycle of guilt and shame that keeps us stuck in the past and prevents us from moving towards a healthy body.

What’s the solution?  1 Corinthians 6:12 has the answer, “Everything is permissible for me- but not everything is beneficial.  Everything is permissible for me- but I will not be mastered by anything.”

There are no rules.  You can eat whatever you want, whenever you want and as much as you want.  You are free to eat chocolate.  But will eating whatever you want, whenever you want and as much as you want benefit you?  Will it help you get where you want to go?  Eating whatever, whenever and as much as you want will lead to obesity and chronic disease.  It could even lead to death.  Shopping for clothes will not be fun.  Fitting on an airplane seat will be a challenge and you might have to pay for two seats.  Walking from your car to the office will be difficult. You may have to go on medications with nasty side effects. You may get passed up for a job promotion.  It will have a negative impact on your relationships as you won’t be able to physically do the things you could do before.  Do you really want to live in an endless cycle of guilt and shame?

When it comes to eating, we need to stop making rules, “do not taste,” but say, “I can eat this food, but will it get me where I want to go?  I can have an extra helping of pie, but do I want to deal with the repercussions of eating it?  I can get seconds, but will I achieve my weight loss goals if I do? When we do this, we take the power away from the food and give it back to ourselves.  We are now in control.  We are the one deciding what we want for our life, not the food or the desire for the food.  We can now control the desire because we are free.

Where the law puts our focus on what we don’t want, freedom puts our focus on what we do want. So be free.  It will lead to a better weigh.

FDA Agents Invade Amish Farm in PA

Posted by Liz Reitzig on February 18, 2010

This article, about a recent FDA invasion of an Amish farm, is taken from the National Independent Consumers and Farmers Association

http://nicfa.com/index.html#FDA

By Deborah Stockton
Kinzers, PA – At 9:40 a.m. last Thursday, February 4, only a few miles from the scene of the Nickel Mines Amish massacre of 2006, another drama against the Amish began as agents of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) came onto the property of Amish farmer Dan Allgyer, without permission, claiming to be conducting an investigation.

Agents Joshua Schafer and Deborah Haney, from the Delaware FDA office, drove past Allgyer’s “No Trespassing” signs and up his driveway almost to his barn, where Allgyer happened to be outside.  Allgyer approached the car, the agents got out and Allgyer asked them why they were there.  They produced a piece of paper, asked Allgyer if he was Dan Allgyer, which Allgyer confirmed, asked him his middle initial and phone number, entered the information on the paper, told Allgyer they were there to do an inspection and started reading the paper to him, saying it gave them jurisdiction to be there. The agents – Schafer did most of the talking – said they had a right to be there because “you produce food for human consumption.”  Dan asked why they believed that and they said, “Well, you have cows.  You cannot be consuming all the milk you produce.” They further stated, “If you get a milk truck in to move all this milk you sell milk to the public, therefore we have jurisdiction.”
Dan said, “This is a private farm, I do not sell anything to the public.”

As they continued to harass him about doing an inspection, Allgyer said, “You can sit in your car.  I will call my lawyer.”
The agents remained standing. Allgyer called his attorney who advised him to have the agents call him.  When Allgyer told them to call his attorney Schafer replied, “You are the owner and you have to speak for yourself.”
They pressed him to talk and Schafer asked, “Are you refusing us an investigation?     Allgyer replied, “That’s not what I’m saying.”
They kept repeating, “Are you refusing an investigation?”
Allgyer kept saying, “Call this guy” – meaning his attorney.
Allgyer said they must have asked him six times.
One of them said, “Even if you do not say so, you are still refusing an investigation.”

Eventually Schafer said, “If you refuse an investigation will you answer some questions?”
Allgyer said, “I’d rather not.” When the agents continued to push him Dan said, “Is that a question?
Sheepishly, they said. ‘Yes.” Allgyer said, “What did I say about questions?’
They replied, “Well we’re going to write this up as a refusal to have an investigation and give it to our higher officials.”
Dan felt they were threatening him at this point.
After that, they got in their car, drove out the driveway and parked on the neighbor’s property watching Allgyer.
A visitor, Ivan, who had been on the farm, though not part of the conversation, left in his truck soon after, and the FDA agents proceeded to follow him in their car, even when he stopped at a convenience store to use the facilities.  After forty or fifty miles, Ivan called 911 and told the police he was being followed.
The state police – in two cruisers – pulled the agents over.  Ivan pulled over as well.
Ivan said the police told him that the agents explained they were FDA agents and they had the right to follow him because they were conducting an investigation on the farm he left.  They thought he had product and they wanted samples of the product.
Ivan responded by opening the back of the truck and revealing it was empty.  The agents photographed the inside of the empty truck and gave Ivan a paper, claiming they had a right to inspect his truck.  He told them they were harassing him.  The state trooper said they had a right to follow and pull him over but they were in an unmarked car so Ivan would not have had to pull over.
As with Allgyer, the agents asked Ivan some information which they wrote on the paper they produced, then handed it to him.
Ivan asked them, “Why are you writing up a paper on me when you have no cause?”
They said, “We have a cause, because you left the farm.”
They claimed he had a load off the farm and they wanted samples.
Ivan said, “I didn’t know who you were.” An agent replied, “You saw us at the farm.”
Ivan said. “That doesn’t make any difference, I didn’t know who you were.”
Ivan pointed out that he was at the farm but did not hear what they said.  He was twenty  feet or more away from them and was not involved in their conversation.
Ivan said the police told him they would record that the agents had been following him.
A spokeswoman for the FDA (reached at the phone number on the paper the FDA agents gave to Allgyer) said the FDA has no comment at this time because it is an ongoing investigation.
Dan Allgyer will meet with his county sheriff in the near future to apprise him of this incident.

We will update this story as needed.
