Get Real, Stay Real!

Michael Schmidt, a Real Farmer Hero!

Real Food for Real People!

I like real food; it is what I want my family to eat, every day.  And it is my mission to educate anyone who will listen  as to the benefits of eating real food, for our health and our enjoyment (real food just tastes better!). But another reason to eat real food is that it comes from real farms; something which our modern, processed “food” does not.  By eating real food we are supporting our friends, the small family farmers of our community.  Doing otherwise only supports Fake Food corporations, as well as the medical and  pharmaceutical industries!

But our right to purchase real food from real farms is in real peril.  (Yes, I know; the word “real” is becoming rather redundant.  Bear with me please.)  With our governments on both the federal and state levels conducting farm raids, imposing huge fines for non-compliance, threatening imprisonment to those who won’t be intimidated, and enacting laws which threaten the very existence of small family farms, we must get real about the anti-real food/small family farm bias which exists and threatens our  access to real food, and real health!

Several of the Diaz children, spending a day on The Hill lobbying their lawmakers!

I know what you’re thinking: somebody else will do it.  Not me, I’m too busy.  Let those zealous activist-types do it for me.  I’ve got soccer, work, school, church, clubs, dishes, laundry, and meals to prepare (I’m giving you the benefit of the doubt on that one!).  How am I to have the time to write letters or make a phone call?

It is this apathy and lack of participation in our democracy (?) that has brought us to our current state, a state of government control and denial of basic rights!  Are you a guilty party in this takeover?

Now folks, I understand busy; I have a  bunch of kids at home, all of whom are home schooled.  My days are filled with laundry and dishes and reading lessons and wiping tears and math papers and… Real food!  I prepare all our family’s food from scratch.  I travel miles and miles to obtain this food, to real farms, not those huge factories that some call “farms”.  But I also find the time to write the occasional letter, make a phone call now and then, and even visit with our lawmakers, and potential lawmakers.  Why do I do it? Because it must be done!  If I don’t do it, who will?

Thankfully there are a few others like me who get it, and do it!  People like Liz Reitig, Jonas & Judy Stolzfus, Kevin Brown, Jayne Lubke, Judy Mudrak, Laura Tarbott, Kimberly Hartke, Debbie Stockton, Judith McGreary, Terri Mazzei, Cathy Raymond, Hannah Smith, Sally Fallon Morell, Rhoda & Emmanuel Byler, and many others.  People who have families, responsibilities, and generally lots of other things to do. But they do it!  They are really busy, but they do these things because they understand the vital role they play in our government, and the importance of protecting our real food supply!

So how about you?  Can you carve just a few moments out of your day to write your senators and congressmen?  Make a phone call?  Meet with your local lawmakers at their offices or invite them into your home for time with like-minded friends?

I guarantee you, if more of us don’t do this, there will be no more access to real food, and thus real health!  So get real, and get busy!  You can make a difference, if only you try!
