Organic Produce? . . . Local Produce? . . . Does It Matter?

Posted by Debbie Wysocki on July 18, 2010

Are Organics Worth Their Price?

That would depend . . .

The recession is lingering. . . . and for city dwellers in areas where agriculture is not big, this question can be important for a family’s budget.

While many families have sought out food co-ops and local farmers who aren’t certified organic but certainly are (they don’t use synthetic
pesticides, petroleum-based fertilizers, or sewer sludge), the chickens run free on grass, other families are making the hard choice on whether to spend their money on organic produce.

IS ORGANIC really important?

I recently came across an article in O Magazine — by author Nina Planck did a great job sharing her insights and research.

Our family is a ‘city’ family with a Whole Foods nearby a small market that provides local produce, meats, and dairy, and then
the BIG Super Market — Publix who has its allotted 6 feet of Organic produce 2 feet in the Meat section and so on.

To summarize Nina’s article, there were a whole bunch of European studies.  The bottom line is that we now know that organic produce that is free of synthetic nitrogen fertilizer has:

1.  A stronger immune system.  The nitrogen produces a watery,
sugary cell sap that compromises the plant’s health (imagine that).*
A healthy plant, makes a healthier meal, and tastier.

2.  Higher levels of beneficial antioxidants, including vitamin C
which helps prevent aging)

3.  More polyunsaturated fatty acids (according to the French)

4.  More nutrients according a 5-year study by 33 universities in
the United Kingdom

Maybe this will help you and your family — it’s what the guidelines we use:

These are the fruits and vegetables known to be MOST CONTAMINATED with  herbicides and pesticides

1.  Peaches
2.  Apples
3.  Bell Peppers
4.  Celery
5.  Nectarines
6.  Strawberries
7.  Cherries
8.  Lettuce
9.  Grapes
10. Pears
11. Spinach
12. Potatoes
13. Raspberries
14. Blueberries
15. Kale

My first weekly stop is our local market for any produce, meat, and dairy need.  Note that I pretty much put ALL berries on the buy LOCAL or ORGANIC list.  IF there is anything on my list that they didn’t have that our family really wants, we’ll go on to Whole Foods.  Then for our paper goods and household staples, it’s either the warehouse store or Publix.

Whole Foods brings in a lot of foods from South America — I never buy anything from South America even if it says ‘organic’ from South America because frankly I just don’t believe they monitor the farming practices – but this is just me.

Here’s the list of produce that is LEAST contaminated with herbicides and pesticides

1.  Sweet Corn
2.  Avocados
3.  Pineapples
4.  Cauliflower
5.  Sweet Peas
6.  Broccoli
7.  Onions
8.  Asparagus
9.  Bananas
10. Kiwi
11. Mangoes
12. Papaya
13. Eggplant
14. Cabbage
15. Watermelon
16. Tomato
17. Sweet Potato

Going Organic for many families is a lifestyle change — becoming healthier in all areas.  That’s how it was for us.  We are about 70% organic in our food — it’s all the kids knew until they went to school — and then they got introduced to world of their friends lunch boxes.  As for our cleaning, we are close to 95% green.  Of course, there is always room for improvement!

Why are farmers going organic?  One, the demand is huge.  Two, the money.  For some farmers it’s about raising healthier plants and raising soil fertility — which of course gives better plants!  Let’s hope more farmers choose to go down the organic path — more farmers means more choices and hopefully lower prices for us!
*There was a mention in Planck’s article that when a plant becomes dependent upon synthetic pesticides, it can no longer fend of pests naturally.  Kinda like when people become dependent on pharmaceuticals . . .

WILL ALCOHOL MAKE YOU SWEET?

Posted by Debbie Wysocki on July 1, 2010

ONLY TO MOSQUITOES!

IT’S SUMMER TIME . . .

And that means FUN, more time outdoors, backyard bar-b-ques and for many people, mosquitoes (I can think of a few States that battle this problem, including my current home in Florida!).

Do you hate them as much as me?  Or, should I say do they LOVE YOU as much as they love me?

When I was catching up on reading this past weekend, I came across this interesting article, and wanted to pass along the information from BottomLine Health about . . .

What MOSQUITOES HATE MOST

Along with some interjected commentary from me . . .

It’s not your imagination — mosquitoes really do find some people tastier than others. I’ve always suspected this, and now new UK research confirms that some lucky individuals produce certain skin oils that seem to repel mosquitoes… but, while fascinating, these findings aren’t at a point where we can put them to practical use. Since it’s summer, I thought it would be good to check on the latest expert advice about what’s effective and not effective… safe and not so safe… for keeping mosquitoes away.

This is important because not only are mosquito bites uncomfortable, they also can give you diseases such as West Nile Virus and encephalitis — even here in modern-day America.  Mosquito maven Susan M. Paskewitz, PhD, professor in the department of entomology at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, was happy to offer some helpful advice.

A special NOTE– if you have dogs in an area known for mosquitoes, BE SURE TO CHECK WITH YOUR VET about heartworm  prvention medication. Heartworms are transmitted by mosquitoes to dogs  and a few other species (this parasite is overwhelmingly found in dogs in mosquito territory).  Other animals that can be infected are cats, ferrets, foxes, sea lions, wolves and horses. If you miss one month of medication, your dog could get heartworm, and if left untreated, it’s a painful, fatal illness.  It’s also expensive to treat once diagnosed.  So as with anything, pay now (prevention) or pay later.

WHAT’S IN BUG SPRAY?

Dr. Paskewitz was reassuring about the safety of insect repellents, saying that there’s not much evidence that they are harmful. She told BottomLine Health that just about all the products sold today are formulated using one or more of the following substances…

• DEET. This chemical (on labels it may be called N,N-diethyl-3- methylbenzamide) was developed by the US Department of Defense
after WWII for military personnel stationed in tropical climates.    Dr. P told BLH it has supposedly been applied to humans
more than eight billion times since becoming commercially available  in 1957.  Between then and 2002, which is when a report on DEET safety  was  published in The New England Journal of Medicine, there were fewer than 50 known cases of serious adverse effects from DEET — most caused by incorrect use and most resolving with no long-term consequences.   But DEET-containing products do have the potential to irritate the skin of people who are sensitive and DEET should always be kept away from the eyes. Noting that DEET doesn’t accumulate in the body, Dr. Paskewitz  said that there’s no evidence that using DEET causes cancer or any other  long-term health concerns.

NOTE for parents from Debbie: The studies I reviewed showed that children seemed to be sensitive to DEET AND that should you choose to use DEET for yourself, it should be washed off prior to sleeping.

• Picaridin. This compound (its scientific name is KBR 3023) is odorless,  less oily and even less irritating to the skin and eyes than DEET, Dr.
Paskewitz told the BottomLine Health author.
• IR3535. Derived from natural compounds, this is the proprietary ingredient that supposedly makes Avon’s Skin So Soft Bug Guard products and BullFrog  Mosquito Coast sunblock work so well. It can be irritating if it gets in your eyes but is otherwise safe, Dr. P shared with BLH.
• Lemon Eucalyptus Oil. An extract from the lemon eucalyptus plant, the active ingredient is para-menthane-3,8-diol, and there is a synthetic
version (known as PMD) as well. The only potential issue uncovered by EPA safety tests is that it, too, can irritate the eyes.

How well do they work? Dr. Paskewitz said that all these products are equally effective when tested at 20% concentration — but noted that concentrations vary in commercial products, so check labels to compare strength.

How to use safely According to Dr. Paskewitz: Though none of these products is linked to long-term health concerns, virtually all of them can be irritating to the skin for some people and for the eyes (for practically everyone). Minimize the likelihood that this will happen by using the sprays, creams and wipes only where you need to — on exposed skin, not under clothing. When using a spray product, Dr. Paskewitz advises averting your face and avoiding your eyes (donning glasses can be helpful) and holding your breath while spraying. Wash hands
after applying to prevent getting the products in your eyes if you touch your face.  Avoid cuts, scratches and irritated skin… don’t get any on or near your mouth… and, after you come indoors, she advises washing all treated skin with soap and water.

If you’re prone to irritation, Dr. Paskewitz suggested trying a repellent formulated to be sprayed onto clothing, such as permethrin (Bug Off and Insect Shield are two such products).

AROMATHERAPY — NATURAL SCENTS THAT REPEL MOSQUITOS

If you prefer to take a natural approach, there are numerous plant-based oils that can be effective at keeping mosquitos away — peppermint, cinnamon, citronella, cedar, clove, lemongrass, rosemary, thyme, lavender, catnip, patchouli, tea tree oil, eucalyptus and
sage, to name a few.  But be careful — you’ve heard it before from BottomLine Health, but it bears repeating: Natural substances also have the potential for harm if used incorrectly.

How well do they work? These oils haven’t been tested by the EPA for this purpose, but a few smaller independent studies have found undiluted oils of citronella, patchouli, clove, catnip and Zanthoxylum limonella (lemon oil) quite helpful, sometimes offering more than two hours
of potent repellent power.

How to apply: Here’s the rub: Undiluted oils provide the best protection when applied directly to exposed skin. But they can also cause irritation and rashes and haven’t been tested for safety.  A good solution is to look for these oils in natural skin creams, lotions or oils that
use them as ingredients, formulated to be less irritating.

Debbie’s Personal Recipe: eucalyptus, lavender, lemon and lemongrass mixed together and apply neet (directly to skin) or  you can blend into an uncented lotion or a spray bottle of water.    Be sure to use a sunscreen when using citrus based essential oils because they make your skin more sensitive to sun.  Note that on children under the age of 5 ALL essential oils should be diluted 50%.

WHAT ELSE WORKS AGAINST THESE BLOOD SUCKERS?

Preventive advice includes doing all that you can to reduce the number of mosquitoes in your environment, suggests Dr. Paskewitz. This includes taking the following measures:

First things first — Eliminate standing water. Mosquitoes breed like crazy in ponds and other natural pools of water. To avoid bites, avoid these locations, particularly on days that are hot and still. Keep control over the mosquito population around your home by draining water anywhere that it might collect — even in small containers such as empty flower pots, spare tires, kiddie pools, etc.

Second, stay indoors at dawn and dusk. I know the mosquitoes love to eat me alive in the early morning and at twilight, so if there are lots in your area, try to stay indoors at these times.

Third, watch what you wear. Mosquitoes are attracted to dark colors, particularly red and violet, so wear lighter and brighter colors — also wear long sleeves and pants.

Finally, Paskewitz shares, don’t drink alcohol. Have to say that I’ve found no correlation here because me and the kids don’t drink at all and the mosquitoes eat us alive. My husband loves his beer and never gets bit.  Paskewitz’ research shows drinking alcohol may boost the sugar content in your sweat, making you more attractive to mosquitoes.

If you’re itching to learn more about mosquito behavior and how to stay safe from these pesky critters, visit the Integrated Mosquito Management Web site that Dr. Paskewitz and her team at the University of Wisconsin have developed: http://www.entomology.wisc.edu/mosquitosite/. It’s an interesting read — and they put lots of home remedies to the test.

The #1 Question People Are Asking . . . How Do I Make More $

Posted by Debbie Wysocki on June 13, 2010

More than 16 Million People Have Chosen to Start a Direct

Sales/MLM Business in the US

Who Exactly is Making the Decision To Get Started?

It’s Not Who You Might Think . . .

If you are not already in the industry, these numbers may surprise you.  If you are, I can almost guarantee you’ll be surprised.  And different reasons for both.

Three weeks ago I began gathering research for a presentation I was preparing for the following week.  This topic is important because after all, we want to spend our time recruiting the people who are looking for us, not to mention, we want to place our advertising dollars in the venues where the most prospects will be!
Having recently attended the Direct Selling Women’s Alliance (DSWA) Annual Celebration in Los Angeles, I had the pleasure of sitting down with Nicki Keohohou, the CEO and chatting about some of the changes that have taken place in the last 12 to 24 months in our industry.  This event, in my opinion, is right up there with your company’s convention if you are serious about building a profitable business.  The content is excellent and the value high.

One of the segments was on diversity relating to the direct sales industry — the statistics were so staggering, I couldn’t write fast enough, so I vowed when I got home I would do more research and present this information to our local Meet Up Group (www.HowToSucceedInMLMToday.com) which is 90+ members strong from 30+ different companies in South Florida.

Why?

Because we are in a NEW ECONOMY.

Whether you have a job you love, own a business you are passionate about, have been newly downsized or are recently retired, most people today recognize multiple streams of income are necessary and having a ‘Plan B’ is mandatory.
With 14.8 million people — nearly 10% (9.7%) of the American population jobless in February 2010, we’ve all been impacted in different ways.  And these numbers don’t include the ‘under’ employed — those people who have taken a job beneath their skill level just to put food on the table.

The direct sales/network marketing industry is seeing a significant increase in recruiting because people do not want to be dependent upon Corporate America.  In 2008 (latest year for figures), the US reported more that 16 million direct sellers and $30 BILLION in direct sales.  And, it’s not just in the US — global numbers are 62 million people and $114 Billion in sales.

The statistics above are fairly easy to come by — but getting to the bottom of WHO exactly is joining our business TODAY was shall we say a bit more challenging.  I would compare it to breaking into Fort Knox . . .

After almost many phone calls, numerous emails, called in favors, I was finally able to get the most up-to-date numbers our our industry has, most of which come straight from the Direct Selling Association (DSA).  We do share some generic demographic numbers from a variety of resources including Miriam Muley, CEO of The 85% Niche, LLC http://www.85percentniche.com and the DSWA
Diversity Center.

Here are some key numbers that are important:

83% of ALL purchases made are influenced by a woman.
85% of all people joining the direct selling/network marketing profession are women.
The fastest growing segment in direct sales is women 60 +.
13% of people choosing the industry are Hispanic females between 18 and 45.
Nine out of ten NEW females in the last decade were Black, Hispanic, or Asian.

WHY are these numbers important?

If you have thought about this industry but were unsure of its legitimacy, the sheer numbers should tell you timing is everything.

If you are in the business, the demographics are important because you want to be where your prospective business partners are.

What I can share with you after building two large organizations numbering more than 15,000 people in 7 different countries is exactly what Dr. John Maxwell talks about in his newest book, Everyone Communicates, Few Connect: What the Most Effective People Do Differently.

People want to know the answers to these questions:

1.  Do you care for me?
2.  Can you help me?
3.  Can I trust you?

When you effectively answer these questions and communicate that you truly care for the person and the relationship, you will build a dynasty and create lifestyle freedom.  Building a successful network marketing business does not happen overnight…It’s about relationships and being a person of integrity.

Sleep Like a Baby . . .

Posted by Debbie Wysocki on May 18, 2010

Is It Food, Is It the Environment, Is it You?

Ever have a hard time falling asleep?

Just about everyone has a night here and there of insomnia.  If you’re a woman, like me, then you may be blessed with hormonal
sleeplessness.

Other culprits:

  • Stress
  • Overeating
  • Over Indulgence
  • Raging hormones
  • Too hot . . .Too cold
  • Too much noise

Each of us needs a different amount of sleep to feel rested — your perfect point may be 5 hours while another person’s may be 9.  Most of us fall in the 7 to 8 hour range.  Sleep is important because it’s when our body repairs itself.  If you are having trouble with your sleep keep reading.

Here are some things to avoid when looking to get a good night’s sleep:

• Caffeine.  This one isn’t rocket science.
A recent study showed that in some people, caffeine is not metabolized  efficiently and therefore they  can feel the effects long after consuming it. So an afternoon cup of coffee (or even tea) will keep  some people from falling asleep. Also, some medications, particularly  cold meds and diet pills,  you’ll may find caffeine.
• Alcohol.  It may initially relax you — but there  can be a  rebound effect.

Many people find they  wake up in the middle of the night — and they toss and turn during the night getting a restless  sleep.  And worse, the next morning, you could feel pretty lousy (aka hangover).

Too Much Food.  Avoid Overeating at Dinner.  Eat a reasonably sized meal.  This means eating  protein the  size of your palm and accompanying side dishes.

• Sugar.  Too much sugar has ramifications — lowered immune system, more fat (after your body uses what it needs for  immediate energy, the glycogen turns to fat), impaired cardiovascular function, and possible memory loss.  (wow)

• Stop your Liquids 90 minutes before Bed.  This will cut down on your trips to the bathroom.
Lose weight.  There is some evidence to show being overweight causes sleep apnea.

• Keep your computer and TV out of the bedroom.  Dr. Mercola notes that recent studies have shown that having electrical devices  in the bedroom can be a deterrant to restful sleep.

• Keep your alarm clock out of view.

Here are some things you CAN do:

Foods

Eat a healthy snack before bed –

~ 1 slice whole wheat toast topped with sliced tomato and one turkey slice
~ One cup milk with some grapes
            ~ 4-8 oz of yogurt
            ~ 1/2 cup of pudding
~sliced apple with 1 – 2 tsps of peanut butter

Rituals

Having certain rituals in place can make it easier to fall asleep.  These are some of the rituals that have been shown to be most effective help with sleep.

  • Warm to hot Bath
  •  Armomatherapy
  •  Be consistent in your bedtime
  •  Keep your bedroom on the cool side
  •  Keep your bed for sleeping
  •  Soft sheets
  • Pray and or meditate
  •  Stop work at least one hour before bed
  •  A good book

Supplements Supported by Scientific Studies*

Some individuals  turn to supplements to relax them for sound sleep.  Below are the two favorites.

Valerian. This herb has been used as a sedative for hundreds of years (a pre-cursor to valium).  Like a few popular sleep  medications, valerian seems to enhance the action of the neurotransmitter GABA (gamma amino butyric acid),  which acts to calm us down and make us sleepy. As with any herb,  look for standardized extract — valerian should contain 0.4 to 0.6 percent of valerenic acid. Take 400 to 900 milligrams per day,  two hours before bedtime.  NOTE:  Although valerian has been well researched for safety, it shouldn’t be taken for longer than 30 days.
Common side effects include headache, itchiness, dizziness, and gastrointestinal distress. You should not  take valerian if you are pregnant or nursing, or if you are also taking a prescription sedative.
Melatonin. This neurohormone has long been linked to sleep. Research shows that people with some forms  of insomnia have lower-than-normal levels of melatonin. Reviews of the medical literature suggest that  taking melatonin may help some people with insomnia, in particular, some older people and so-called  nightowls who naturally have a hard time falling asleep before 2 am. Other people may also benefit,
but the research is less clear. Melatonin seems to be safe if taken for only a month or two, with no  known cautions.
NOTE:  The most common side effects are nausea, headache, and dizziness. If you want to try melatonin,  the recommended dosage is 0.3 milligrams per day. If you have trouble falling asleep, use immediate-release  form; if you have trouble staying asleep, use sustained-release form.   It may be several days before you see any results; but if you don’t see results after two weeks, chances are melatonin won’t work
 for you.

*Although Both Valerian and Melatonin have been shown to be safe in many studies, it is always best to check with your medical professional before starting on any supplementation prgram especially if you are taking prescription medications or have any health conditions.

Just Do It . . . 7 Secrets to Get Moving

Posted by Debbie Wysocki on May 5, 2010

WHY Just Do It?

When anyone starts a transformation program like 30 Days to Wellness, the key is to begin with the end in mind AND keep your WHY in front of you.

WHY are you working for a new body?

Is it simply to:

~ Look Better
~ Feel Better
~ Improve Your Health
~ Enter a Marathon or Triathlon

How do we keep your WHY in front of you?  First write it out.  I am fit and healthy.  I have incredible energy.
I have ___% body fat.  I love to exercise — it moves me closer to my goal every day.

Be sure to include a picture of the YOU you want to be.  This picture can be a YOU from years gone by (but with an
updated head shot) OR perhaps you may find a picture of someone else’s body you like and you’ll need to slap your
photo on it.

The point is, before you pull the covers over you head and say no to exercise or yes to a second helping of mac n cheese,
take a look at YOUR WHY!

Here are 7 Secrets that many individuals have found to be useful in getting going — and sticking to an exercise program:

1)  Move to music — put a headset on or the radio or cable tv.  It will depend how you choose to get moving what your
options are, but there are a lot of options.  Double-the-heartbeat music makes it easier for you to move.

2)  Grab a friend or partner.  Most of the time when we meet friends, it’s revolves around food and eating.  For the next
30 days, commit to yourself to have all dates revolve around exercise.

3)  Make exercise a habit — we know that it takes 21 days to create a new habit — put the appointment in your calendar.
Move for at least 30 minutes EVERY day for 30 days.  When you’re exercising make sure you are elevating your heart rate
(yes, a fast walk will do it).

4)  Small Chunks — while sustained exercise is certainly beneficial, if you can only steal away for 10 or 15
minutes, go for it — every little bit adds up to reach your goal.

5)  Imagine yourself where you want to be — in other words, imagine yourself as if you have already achieved your Wellness
Goal.  This exercise is for all levels — imagine how you look — imagine  how you feel emotionally and physically.  Imagine
how great clothes look on you.  Imagine how people respond to you.  Imagine how you inspire others to stick to their fitness
goals.  It makes it easier to exercise.

6)   Buy some cute new exercise clothes (that one is for girls).  This will make you look forward to exercising.

7)   Try something NEW — if you always wanted to go rock climbing but have been putting it off, DO IT NOW!  Make this exercise
thing fun!

Here are a couple of more quick tips to stack the deck in your favor:

Create the space . . .

This is literal and figurative

1)  Where . . .

~ Will you be exercising at home?  If so, have you made room to do so?  Do you have all the equipment you need?  Free weights,
resistance bands, cardio equipment (if you aren’t doing the walking thing)?

~ Will you be exercising at a gym?  If you don’t already have a membership, do you know where you are going to join?

2)  When . . .

~  Schedule the time (space) with yourself.

~  Schedule time with your friends to exercise — it makes it fun!

3)  For Support . . .

~  An Accountability Team.  Typically this is a team of two other people besides you who you report into regularly your
results.  It helps keep you on track.

~  Build a ‘Love Posse’  Think of yourself as a flower with you in the center You need 5 people who will support you
unconditionally.

Our goal at Liberation Wellness is to support you in your wellness goals.  Let us know how you are doing!

It’s Right Up There With Oxygen!

Posted by Debbie Wysocki on April 11, 2010

How’s your bank account?

No, I don’t expect an answer, but Money is an important concept to get our hands around.
Some would say it’s right up there with oxygen!

Friend or Foe?
*We need to Manage it or it will become our master.
*In this economy, women are becoming the ‘Chief Financial Officer’ of their households.
*People are more open to sharing about ‘money’ because the economy has impacted everyone — and the savvy person is wise
enough to listen and be discerning.
*We have been given a great opportunity to educate our children about budgeting and priorities.
*People are recognizing that these challenging times may be around a little longer than initially expected and that we
need to not only become good stewards of our money, but become creative in generating our income.

Twenty-four years ago when I began my career as a financial analyst in Beverly Hills, I didn’t realize how many people didn’t plan for their future.  It quickly became apparent that even ‘professionals’ very rarely planned.  I vowed not to be one of those statistics — that’s my hope for you too!

Here are a couple of things I teach the kids:

1)  10% to God (tithing)
2)  Save 20% For Investments
3)  Spending — this includes fun, and gift giving — of course, it’s age appropriate for the kids as their     earning potential increases.

Where did I get this formula?  From one of my favorite mentors, Jim Rohn.  I’ll never forget listening to one of his audios and hearing him say (more than once), teach your kids the importance of saving and giving.  It’s much easier to give 10 cents out of a dollar to God than it is to give $10,000 dollars out of $100,000.  If you teach your children with a dollar, it becomes a habit when it grows to $100 — and then $1,000 and so on.  Rohn talked about using the savings for investments to grow your capital — not to buy the latest gadget.  The gadget savings comes out of the ‘spending’ category.

Citibank has a quick sheet for talking to kids about money — here’s the link to download it:

https://www1.citibank.com/womenandco/docs/pdf/tools/5mg_kids_money.pdf
Here’s a great site I came across this weekend that provides a variety of financial information in an easy-to-understand format on a variety of topics for kids, women, savings, retirement, insurance, college.

 https://www1.citibank.com/womenandco/index.jsp
Another trend is that people whether people have a job they love or own a business they are passionate about, they recognize, the need for a back-up plan — some people call it a ‘Plan B.’  This can be a second job or a home business.   Obviously I’m partial to the home business idea — for many reasons — here’s just three of more than 20:

1)  The tax savings
2)  The flexibility
3)  The ability to create an additional source of income

This additional income can be used for many goals that we all have on our dream boards.

Let me know if you have any questions, I absolutely love what I do, and this is it!

Are You On the Right Track?

Posted by Debbie Wysocki on March 25, 2010

Are You Driving on The Right Track to Take You Where Your Want to Go?

It is March 25th and we are looking April 1st square in the Face.

That means 2010 is almost 25% gone — and we have 9 months to
change our course — if we are off track for our goals.

So perform a ‘check-up’ to be sure you are you will reach you goals for 2010.

Here is something that crossed my desk from my friend Max Steingart– I hope it speaks to you the way it did to me:
SUCCESSFUL DECISIONS

If you don’t run your own life, someone else will. You’re in control of your life
to the degree that you make decisions.

To control the outcome of anything, you control the action at the point of decision making.
If you let others make decisions for you, you give up control. When you control the decisions, you control the actions.

Take charge of your life, so there is no longer a need to ask permission of others.
When you ask permission, you’re giving someone “veto” power over your life.

Only you are responsible for your life. Take control and start making those decisions.
***

So how will you apply this?

We get performance reviews at work . . . our kids get report cards at school . . . we need to be disciplined enough to track our goal performance.

  • Have you De-Cluttered your Closets
Have you stuck to your exercise program
Have you got ‘beach body’ ready
Is your office organized (or are you still a piler)?
Have you written the book you wanted to
    How about those Spanish lessons
Did you start that business you mentioned last year?

Jim Rohn says we’re where at because of our daily habits. Small decisions repeated daily — I tell my kids the small
things that make a difference are easy to do . . . and easy not to do!  And this can be anything from flossing your teeth
to making a 10th follow-up phone call to a prospective customer.  Easy to do . . . and definitely easy not to do.

Give a shout out and let us know what your goals are for this year and if you are on track — let us know if we can assist you.
Liberation Wellness can has many program to assist with both total wellness, diet, and exercise.  I can assist with home business
questions/connections.  We’re here to celebrate with you.

Stinkin Thinkin . . .

Posted by Debbie Wysocki on March 11, 2010

BAD DAY?

STINKIN THINKIN?

Do People Run When They See You Coming?

We’ve all been there . . . but is there any connection to our stinkin thinkin and our body chemistry . . . as in moving our body from a healthy alkaline state to an acidic state?

 ABSOLUTELY!

While we probably all at some level know that our thoughts are indeed connected to our health and well being, it is indeed scientifically proven.

Medical News Today wrote ‘Having negative thoughts really could make you more illness-prone,’ say scientists.  A study in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences links ‘negative’ brain activity with a weakened immune system.  http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/4227.php

Dr. Robert Young of pH Miracle Living has a theory of there being only one sickness and only one disease.  While certainly diet affects your physiology also how your psychology affects your physiology. Your mental state is so critical.

He believes a negative mental state can create more metabolic acids than the food you’re eating.  In fact, Young says you can create two or three times more metabolic acids from your thoughts; your mental state than from what is typically considered non-alkaline foods.  So your thoughts are critical.

Here’s a summary of what happens:

When you have a thought, that thought requires energy for the brain cells to produce that thought.

When you are thinking and using energy,  you produce a biological waste product called, acid.

If the metabolic acids from your thoughts are not properly eliminated through the four channels of elimination:

  • urination
  • perspiration
  • respiration
  • defecation

then, the acids from your thoughts are moved out into your fatty tissues and connective tissues.

This could lead to all sorts of health challenges such as:

  •  Lupus
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Arthritis
  • Muscle pain
  • Fatigue
  • Obesity
  • Cancerous breasts
  • Cancerous prostate
  • Indigestion acid
  • Reflux
  • Heart burn
  • heart attacks

And the list goes on and on.

You might say you are feeling emotional. Emotions are “energy in motion.”

 *****

Now, from a more practical viewpoint — how do you feel when you have negative thoughts?  BAD  — Right?

How about negative words — do they make you feel good?  (Whether you speak them or hear them) I’m guessing No Again.

When you are consistently around negative words, negative people or negative thoughts, your body will become stressed out and go to that ‘acid’ state.  You’re not going to feel good.

Being a top leader in the network marketing industry required me to grow in self-development and personal development.

One of the things I found in first growing myself and then others was that most people use negative words, have negative thoughts, and hang out with negative people.

When you take the first step, which is to make the decision to use positive words, have positive thoughts, take positive actions, and hang out with positive minded people – LIFE EXPLODES — and generally speaking people are happier and healthier.

 Here are some practical steps:

 1)  Examine your language.  Eliminate negative words.

 2)  Thoughts.  Here’s one of my favorite quotes that while short, summarizes a lot:

‘If you think you can do a thing or think you can’t do a thing, you’re right.’           — Henry Ford

Get rid of stinkin thinkin – it won’t help you or those you care about — you wouldn’t tell  your 9 month old when he falls down trying to take his first steps ‘what makes you think you     can walk?’  So, get your thoughts and words on a positive track.

 3)  Actions — Are you moving towards your passions?  — Ask yourself each day as opportunities (distractions) come your way, will they move you closer to your goals?  Identify at the end of each day what are your TOP 3 objectives for the next day — and stick to them

 4)  Negative People — get rid of them — they are toxic to you and your health.  If they are your family, it’s easier said than done.  But if they are not family, drop them like a hot potato.  You will be happier.

RAW . . . ROASTED . . . SPROUTED?

Posted by Debbie Wysocki on February 26, 2010

WHY SPROUT?
That’s a good question.

I was certainly clueless.

First we got to  organic . . . then we got to raw . . . now you’re telling me we need to eat sprouted nuts?

Tell me why please.  There certainly is a price difference.  Although, with a little work, you can sprout your own nuts
(and other things) yourself.  As a mom, I keep a bag of raw sprouted almonds in my car at all times along with some
fruit to make sure none of the kids strave for too long.  So know that raw AND sprouted tastes good.
So still the question WHY?

While it’s important to me to make sure my family eats well, I couldn’t remember why we went to sprouted.
After doing a little research, I found a great article at www.JigsawHealth.com that explains all the phases of a nuts life
shares

ROASTED . . . RAW . . . SPROUTED?

Nuts come from around the world in a variety of shapes and sizes. Most nuts come from the seeds or dried fruits of trees
and have an outer shell that both protects the nut and keeps the healthy fats inside the nut from spoiling.

After being picked, most nuts are dried—not only to improve flavor and add more crunch to the texture, but to preserve them.
These are what we know as raw nuts.

From there, the marketing of nuts begins: shelled or unshelled, salted or unsalted, roasted, sprouted, candied, spiced,
packaged, or bulk. But let’s talk about how nuts get processed—and what happens to their nutritional content in the process.

RAW (or unroasted) NUTS. Contrary to popular belief, raw nuts are not simply plucked from trees and sold on a grocery store
shelf. As mentioned previously, most nuts are dried to preserve them and improve their flavors and textures. These are raw nuts. While raw nuts are fairly nutritious and have no added fat, they’re often bland and tasteless.

Raw nuts also contain enzyme inhibitors which help to protect the seed and keep it from germinating too early and dying off.
This also helps to keep the species going.

But these enzyme inhibitors, when introduced into the body, actually neutralize the enzymes your body uses to control
inflammation and aid in digestion. In fact, eating nuts with these enzyme inhibitors can cause the pancreas to swell.

There are only two ways to destroy these enzyme inhibitors: 1) roasting, which also destroys the enzymes, and 2) sprouting,
which keeps the beneficial enzymes intact.

ROASTED NUTS. While roasted nuts have a lot more flavor than raw nuts, there are some definite disadvantages to them:
1) added oils, 2) added ingredients, 3) more difficult to digest, and 4) less nutritional value.

Nuts can be either dry roasted or roasted in oil. As you probably already know, dry-roasted nuts contain less fat than
nuts roasted in oil. In fact, roasting nuts in oil is a lot like deep frying—nuts are dumped into highly saturated palm
kernel or coconut oils, adding about a gram of fat and 10 calories per ounce to nuts with an already high fat and calorie
content.

Then roasted nuts are often heavily salted and almost always have other ingredients added to them such as sugar,
corn syrup, MSG, preservatives, and other additives.

In addition, many people have trouble digesting nuts because of the high fat content. Adding more fats during roasting makes
them even more difficult to digest.

Finally, roasting destroys much of the nutritional content of nuts. Vitamin B, particularly vitamin B1 (thiamine), which
helps produce energy and keep the heart healthy, is most often killed off in roasting.

And, as mentioned previously, roasting not only destroys the enzyme inhibitors, it destroys the enzymes needed by the body
to help with digestion.

So roasted nuts may have more flavor than raw nuts—but at a price: your health.

SPROUTED NUTS. Sprouted nuts neatly solve the nutrition problem of roasted nuts and the tastelessness of raw nuts.
And, the process is not new. It dates back thousands of years and is still practiced today in non-meat-eating cultures
where nuts are a staple food.

This traditional process, called sprouting.  It does not begin with drying as in the case of raw or roasted nuts.
Instead, freshly picked nuts are soaked for 24 hours in water and a pinch of sea salt, causing the nuts to begin germinating.

The nuts are then removed from the solution and slowly dried at a very low temperature with low humidity. This slow drying
process destroys the enzyme inhibitors, releasing the full nutritional content of the nut and allowing the body’s natural
enzymes to more easily digest the nuts.

While much more time-consuming, sprouting makes nuts more digestible, gives them much greater nutritional value, makes
them crunchier, and best of all, releases an unmistakably fresher flavor.

As a footnote from me, Debbie, you can purchase either raw or raw, sprouted nuts.  OR, you can purchase raw nuts and sprout
your own (see the instructions below).  It is relatively simple and the instructions below are only from one website.
I have a friend that simply soaks her almonds overnight and then roasts thems for about an hour on a very low temperature.
Last but not least, if you have not incorporated raw, sprouted nuts into your diet, you might want to take a second look:

Almonds
Brazil Nuts
Cashews
Hazelnuts
Peanuts
Pecans
Pistachios
Pumpkin Seeds
Walnuts

Nuts are good sources of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, good fats, and protein.

Kim Harris from www.TheNourishingGourmet.com shares that soaking grains is vital to proper health — in fact,  she
says ‘grains that are not soaked equal poor digestive worth and blocked vitamins and minerals.’  She goes on to
say ‘Soaked grains equal better digestive worth and make vitamins and minerals available to absorb.’  Visit
www.TheNourishingGourmet.com for detailed instruction in soaking various grains and extensive recipes.  This is
definitely a ‘thumbs up’ website!

***
Sprouting Instructions (from www.SproutPeople.com)
Yields approximately 1 Cup (1/2 lb.) of Sprouts

Prep 2/3 Cup of seed (nuts) then transfer (if necessary) into a bowl or into your Sprouter.
Add 2-3 times as much cool (60-70 degree) water.
Mix seeds up to assure even water contact for all.
Allow seeds to Soak for 4-12 hours.
Empty the seeds into your sprouter if necessary.  Drain off the soak water.

Rinse thoroughly with cool (60-70°) water and Drain thoroughly.

Set anywhere out of direct sunlight and at room temperature (70° is optimal) between Rinses.

Rinse and Drain again in 8-12 hours. And, perhaps one more…Rinse and Drain in 8-12 hours.
Stop here unless you are doing a science experiment or growing an almond tree seedling.

Note: Almond sprouts are not intended to germinate fully, their germ is meant to bulge but not put out a root.
That is why they are called Soaks.

Also: You can skip that last Rinse and Drain without altering your crop at all!

As always, we suggest that you taste your crop at EVERY RINSE – including the very first – just after the Soak period.
The soaked seeds are already alive and are now super-nutritious – and – they now have no enzyme inhibitors
(a very good thing indeed) so they’ll digest themselves and nourish you.

Accomplishment List Vs. To Do List

Posted by Debbie Wysocki on February 19, 2010

What will you accomplish — wouldn’t it be more fun to have an Accomplishment list than a  To Do List?
We all have the same amount of time each day — it’s how we spend it that makes the difference in our results.

86,400

Seconds that is — that’s how many we all get to spend each day.

How do you spend each of your days?

Do you put first things first?

Are you FIRED UP?

Do your activities move your towards where your want to go OR are they just ‘busy’ work.  Sometimes, it’s better
to say NO or delegate.

Is your life full of ‘juicy’ relationships?  You have to make time!

Do you bless others each day?

Do you go to bed each night full of gratitude?
At the end of the day (like the end of the month), there’s an accounting of sorts.  Where did the day go?
What is on that accomplishment list of yours (aka a to do list that is crossed off).

It’s easy to get side-tracked–we all do it–our goal is for you to have more accomplishments an more fun!

***

My friend Phil Humbert shares some of his observations below about successful people and how they ‘Thrive in a Chaotic World’
and are able to ‘Accomplish More’

They seem comfortable, challenged, even exhilarated by chaos, and yet they maintain balance and tranquility in their lives.
It’s a amazing set of skills!

The most effective people seem to thrive in a world of chaos and constant change. They know that results are based on
intelligent action and focused effort, while they develop superb skills to “play and win” in a chaotic, often contradictory world.

They are unusually comfortable with ambiguity.

They know they will never have enough information. They know the rules are often out of date before they are even published,
and yet they thrive.

In the midst of chaos, they go quietly about their business.  When others are losing control, they remain calm. When others panic,
they have a cup of tea and contemplate their next strategic move.  They often move quickly, but always with a sense of confidence,
power and grace. How can this be?
Several things are necessary to thrive in the midst of chaos:

1. Exceptional boundaries.
Winners close their doors and ignore disruptions.   They turn off the phone and claim their space.
They know where they are going and tolerate few distractions.

2.  Exceptional vision.
Winners know their priorities and their desired outcomes.   They know what they want and they can see, taste, smell
and almost touch their results in advance. They have goals  and tasks rather than mere hopes or wishes.

3.  Exceptional self-direction.
Winners are in charge of their lives and chaos around them is just that — other people’s chaos swirling around them,
while they maintain an inner calm. They are not lost or confused about their values, their priorities, their
direction or their most important daily tasks.

4.  Exceptional optimism.
They see chaos as opportunity.  Chaos “stirs the pot” and opens doors. Rather than annoying or frustrating them,
they love it! On a wild and windy day, a rainbow may appear at any moment and they are eager to welcome it.

5.  Exceptional Reserves.
They take care of themselves. They eat well, rest often, save and invest wisely and when opportunity knocks, they
are waiting to answer the door. They operate from strength and stability, while a chaotic world wreaks havoc on the competition.

6.  Exceptional response-ability.
Rather than reacting from stress, anger, fear or anxiety, they see a magnificent, ever-changing world and respond
quickly to once-in-a- lifetime opportunities.   “Desperate” people react; winners respond.

John Lennon observed that

“life is what happens while you were making other plans.”

Do you think life is going to wait until you’re ready?  I’ve found that the stars rarely line up for perfect timing.

Successful people from all walks of life learn to adapt and thrive on the constant and never ending chaos.  They seize the
opportunities at hand.

This applies to moms, employees, entrepreneurs, students — yes anyone reading who wants to make their mark.  Don’t think you
have to be a CEO to have an ‘ACCOMPLISHMENT LIST.’
