FDA CONCEDES RAW MILK ACROSS STATE LINES OK FOR PERSONAL CONSUMPTION

But continues to broadcast misinformation about unpasteurized dairy

Washington, DC ( November 17, 2011)—In a statement issued on November 1, concurrent with a raw milk freedom rally held outside FDA headquarters in Silver Spring, Maryland, the agency conceded that it “has never taken, nor does it intend to take, enforcement action against an individual who purchased and transported raw milk across state lines solely for his or her own personal consumption” [www.fda.gov/Food/FoodSafety/Product-SpecificInformation/MilkSafety/ucm277854.htm]. This statement reverses FDA’s prior position in which the agency reserved the option of taking action against individual consumers crossing state lines with raw milk. Federal regulation 21 CFR § 1240.61 prohibits the introduction of raw milk for human consumption into interstate commerce.

A caravan of moms brought raw milk across state lines on November 1 and served it to rally participants in front of FDA headquarters.

“Unfortunately, FDA’s announcement allowing individuals to transport raw milk across state lines is filled with the same misinformation that the agency has spread in the past,” says Sally Fallon Morell, president of the Weston A. Price Foundation, an organization that sponsors A Campaign for Real Milk, aimed at universal access to clean raw milk. “FDA continues to insist that raw milk is dangerous, when even the agency’s own exaggerated list of outbreaks shows that raw milk is safer than other foods.”

“FDA lists outbreaks associated with raw cheese, produced in less than sanitary conditions, as ‘outbreaks caused by raw milk,’ thereby inflating the number of illnesses associated with raw milk,” says Fallon Morell. “The actual number of illnesses associated (but not necessarily proved) with raw milk is about forty-two per year, which makes raw milk a very safe food given the large number of raw milk consumers. No deaths have been associated with raw milk during the past twelve years, but three people have died from tainted pasteurized milk.”

FDA insists that raw milk drinkers constitute less than 1 percent of the population. Yet a 2007 government survey found that about 3 percent of the population consumes raw milk, or about nine million people. This number is likely to be higher today as raw milk consumption is growing rapidly. Even in the state of Maryland, where raw milk sales are illegal, over 3 percent of respondents stated that they drank raw milk. “This milk is coming from Pennsylvania, where raw milk sales are legal,” says Pete Kennedy, president of the Farm-to-Consumer Legal Defense Fund, “to the great detriment of Maryland farmers.” According to Kennedy, hundreds of thousands of dollars of farm sales each year flow from Maryland to Pennsylvania.

The Farm-to-Consumer Legal Defense Fund is currently representing citizens challenging the interstate ban on raw milk in an Iowa federal district court .

According to Fallon Morell, “FDA continues to insist that no science exists to substantiate the nutritional and health benefits of raw milk, yet we now have five European studies, published in peer reviewed journals, showing that raw milk provides powerful protection against asthma and allergies. And there is copious scientific research showing that pasteurization of milk denatures and diminishes the effectiveness of enzymes and vitamins in the milk.”

Moreover, raw milk is designed to build the immune system—the components that do this are denatured by the heat process of pasteurization. FDA claims that the elderly, the immune-compromised, children and pregnant women especially should avoid raw milk. “These are the very people who need it the most,” says Fallon Morell.

The Weston A. Price Foundation is a nutrition education non-profit with 550 local chapters worldwide, and close to 13,000 members. The organization works to educate the public about the health benefits of unprocessed milk from grass-based dairies through its Campaign for Real Milk, http://realmilk.com.

A518 NJ Raw Milk Bill

STEP ONE — SUCCESSFUL !!!
The bill got voted out of committee in the Assembly today.

The Agriculture and Natural Resources committee of the NJ State Assembly heard powerful supporting and opposing testimony for the NJ Raw Milk Bill and voted unanimously to pass the bill out of committee.

PLEASE SAY THANK YOU
The members of the committee heard alot of really negative things about raw milk today and every single one of them voted to pass the bill out of committee so it can go to the whole Assembly for a vote. (This vote will come after the bill is amended to include additional warning information in bottle labels.)

Please contact every committee member and say thank you:
Nelson Albano (D), Chair
(609) 465-0700
AsmAlbano@njleg.org

Gilbert Wilson (D), Vice Chair
(856) 541-1251
AsmWilson@njleg.org

Marlene Caride (D), new committee member
(201) 943-0615
AswCaride@njleg.org

Robert Clifton (R), new committee member
(732) 446-3408
AsmClifton@njleg.org

Ronald Dancer (R)
(609) 758-0205
AsmDancer@njleg.org

NEXT STEP
Please contact your Assemblymen and/or Assemblywomen (you have two) to express your support of raw milk. If your legislator needs more information to make a decision, you will be able to find PDFs at www.gardenstaterawmilk.org and can contact www.foodshedalliance.org for additional information.

FIND YOUR LEGISLATORS
- Go to www.njleg.state.nj.us
- Under MEMBERS, click Find Your Legislator
- Click Municipality, find your town and note the district number
- Then click Legislators for your district number
Look for two people under the Assembly heading. Office phone numbers are included. If you prefer to email, use the legislators’ emails follow this pattern — Asm or Asw followed by last name, then @njleg.org. For example, to thank Assemblyman John DiMaio, one of the primary bill sponsors, email him at AsmDiMaio@njleg.org.

TALKING POINTS
You can tell your personal story of how raw milk has helped you and your family. You may want to say how long you have been drinking raw milk. If raw milk has contributed to your health, and has not made you sick, that is important to say too.

Other important points are:
- consumer right to choose
- economic opportunity for NJ farmers
- keep raw milk dollars in NJ

POWERFUL OPPOSITION
Opposing testimony today came from the American Academy of Pediatrics, the regional milk conglomerate, Cornell University Extension staff, a dairy testing lab, health officers, and many others. These groups can apply strong pressure to our legislators, so it’s important we continue to make our voices heard.

THANK YOU TO YOU TOO
Thank you to everyone who is part of this important effort, with phone calls, emails, written testimonies, trips to Trenton — it is all so important to the success of this legislation.

Every half minute a person dies of a heart attack in the U.S., making heart attack the number one cause of death for adults in the U.S. (National Hear, Lung and Blood Institute Fact Book: Fiscal Year 1995). But our common conception of the cause of heart attack – that it is caused by high cholesterol – cannot be further from the truth! To lessen your risk of heart attack, we need to understand ”The Low-Down on Cholesterol-Lowering Drugs,” from Sherry A. Rogers, M.D:

Statin drugs work by poisoning a liver enzyme that makes cholesterol. That enzyme is HMC COA reductase (3-hydroxyl-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A reductase). The problem? The fact that cholesterol is needed to keep the brain from aging. Aging brain = Alzheimer’s, senility, amnesia, depression, and nerve, heart and muscle damage..

Turning off cholesterol production fuels the Viagra epidemic, because you need cholesterol to make your sex hormones like testosterone, estrogen and progesterone. Impotency and low libido are common side affects, including fatigue or exhaustion, irritability, road rage, hostile aggression.

We need cholesterol in the cell membranes so that they can properly release cytokines. Only healthy cell membranes with sufficient cholesterol can release chemicals that we need to make inside of our cells to kills cancer cell.

Statin drugs create a coenzyme Q10 deficiency. Statin drugs inhibit or poison the same enzyme, HMG COA reductase, that the body uses to make the fat-soluble vitamin, CoQ10. A deficiency often caused fatal cardiomyopathy, heart attack , congestive heart failure, exhaustion, cancer, myopathy (muscle diseases), fibromyalgia, depression resistant to anti-depressants, high blood pressure, gum disease and tooth loss, hair loss, liver disease, sudden complete memory loss or amnesia, cataracts, anigina, folic acid deficiency, damaged cell membranes, fatigue, accelerated aging and much more. Without sufficient CoQ10 levels, you are likely to die within 6 months (pg. 6).

Cholesterol drugs deplete nutrients and invite cancer, which is why statin drug users have a higher rate of cancer. As well as lowering CoQ10, statins deplete vitamin E and vitamin A precursor, beta-corotene, as much as 22%.

Statins damage the good effects of vitamin E, instead making it easier for cholesterol to stick in blood vessel walls causing coronary artery disease, heart attack, and death.

Statin cholesterol-lowering drugs decrease the ability of insulin to metabolize sugars. Which means the body makes more insulin, which promotes arteriosclerosis, which promotes diabetes, which accelerates aging.

Taking statin drugs increases the risk of developing polyneuropath (neurological disorder) 14-fold. Symptoms include numbness and tingling to impotency or paralysis.

Statins can cause amnesia, within minutes. (Hopefully your taxi driver or airplane pilot isn’t on a statin!)

Cholesterol drugs cause miserable people. “One out of three people have low energy, does not feel content, is no longer happy, and has other subtle and affective changes” (pg. 10). The brain receptors for the hormones to plug in in the brain to make us feel good are malformed when there isn’t enough cholesterol and other nutrients. So regardless of how much Prozac you take, you won’t feel better because there is no dock for the “happy hormones”.

Cholesterol drugs guarantee an avalanche of new symptoms, especially caner and more serious heart disease.

That is a fairly simple list for the layman to understand, but then the question always follows: WHY?!

All my conspiracy theorists will love this one! As you probably have heard, the pharmaceutical industry has its hands all up in the FDA pockets, or should I say vice verse? One of all the cholesterol-lowering drugs brings in more than five times the entire annual budget for the FDA! So of course they want to put them on the market despite scientific studies proving the drug causes side affects. Frequently drugs are taken off the market only after lawsuits emerge. If the FDA keeps adding drugs and then taking them off, why do we still trust them?

There are many examples of drugs that I could write about where the dangerous side affects of the drug were known and yet were allowed on the market. But I will spare you the gory details. Just know that the most important person to your health is not your doctor, but you.

If you continue to take statin drugs despite the dire warnings contained in this article (and this article does not contain all the trials and tribulations of cholesterol-lowering drugs), at least take the following to begin to repair your deficits and damage:

E Gems Elite, 1-2/day

Gamma E Gems, 1-2/day

Cod Liver Oil, 1-3 tsp/day

Super 2 Daily, 2/day

Phos Chol, 1-3 tsp/day

Liquid Multiple Minerals, 1-2/day

Q-ODT (80 mg of CoQ10), 1-3 under the tongue, 1-3 times/day

I don’t think I’ll ever forget the incredible experience I put myself through beginning on the evening of April 10th through Sunday, April 17, 2011 when I consciously chose to do one of the most unlikely things for the first time ever in nearly four decades of living–I embarked on a one-week fast–ON PURPOSE–just to see how I would do. This isn’t something I just flippantly decided to try on a whim, though. I had asked my readers in this February 2011 blog post if they had ever tried an extended fasting period like this before and so many of them responded with their feedback about how it went for them–good, bad and ugly. In fact, one sweet Christian lady named Wendy blogged daily about her own 40-day fast after her pastor challenged their congregation at the beginning of the year to do it for spiritual renewal. So many other people I talked to about fasting shared with me how amazing they felt both during and after fasting that I concluded this was something I wanted to try for myself.

This personal interest in doing a one-week fast actually started ruminating in my mind way back in November 2009 when I interviewed a Boston College brain cancer researcher named Dr. Thomas Seyfried (listen to him share about how doing an annual 7-10 day water fast can be used as a therapeutic means for preventing cancer starting at around 27:48 in the interview). At the time I thought the idea of going without food for a couple of days, much less a week, was virtually impossible (and crazy!) for me. I was already dealing with some reactive hypoglycemia that saw my blood sugars dropping out of the blue even eating low-carb foods. However, this seemed to normalize itself last year when I went on my “eggfest.” So with my concerns about my blood sugar causing me issues beginning a genuine attempt at a weeklong fast, the only question was when to do it. After attending the low-carb science conference in Baltimore the weekend prior to this and knowing the 4th Annual Low-Carb Cruise wasn’t coming up for a few more weeks, I decided this was the perfect time to give it a go. And so I decided to do it in earnest.

I’ll admit that I went into this extremely skeptical whether I’d be able to last very long. It’s not that I didn’t have confidence in myself that I could do it, but it just seemed too implausible for a food lover like me to lay down the fork for an entire week. My expectations for attempting this were wide open and I simply wanted to go through the experience just to see what it would be like. So many people asked if I was doing this to lose weight and the emphatic answer is not at all. Any weight loss on a complete fast would not likely stay off once food is reintroduced to the body. That’s not to say a few stubborn pounds of fat wouldn’t find a way to leave my body and that’s never a bad thing. But my primary purpose was to monitor how I felt going without any food for a week. Here’s my 7 daily update videos about how each day of my fast went:

http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=A00A6F99D882F892

I learned so much more than I could have ever bargained for in a variety of ways:

PHYSICALLY DOING THE FAST
The first three days for me were some of the most difficult because my body was screaming at me to eat something. I felt “spacey” for much of the time as if everything around me was running in slow motion. At the same time, my thoughts were clear and I was fully functioning despite having no food. And honestly, I felt good for most of the time through this fast. Days 4 and 5 were the BEST of the seven as I experienced the big “whoosh” of renewed energy that I had heard so many people share would happen. Day 6, though, I struggled early on with a strong desire to eat again and by Day 7 when I was at church I felt absolutely horrible feeling like my blood sugar had dropped to a level that zapped me of all my energy. When I saw a reading in the 50s and could barely stand up around 2PM on the final day of the fast, I knew it was time to break it.

BLOOD SUGAR AND WEIGHT
I didn’t measure my blood sugar every single day, but the few times I did show readings like the one you see above in the 60s. Sure, this is below the around 80 fasting blood sugars I generally see on my healthy low-carb lifestyle, but that’s what happens when you don’t eat any food at all. Controlling blood sugar and giving your pancreas a week to rest from producing insulin (if you aren’t a diabetic) is an excellent reason for attempting a fast like this. My weight on the other hand was monitored each day starting at around 261 when this began. The first few days saw about a pound a day come off and then Days 4-7 saw a couple to several pounds drop. While I wasn’t doing this to lose weight, it certainly produced a sizable drop on the scale of 13 pounds in one week. I fully expect to put some of that weight back on this week as I return to eating again.

EXERCISE DURING THE FAST
Believe it or not, I decided to keep up with my exercise routine during my fasting week and I did a whole lot better than I thought. I knew not to push it too hard and if I told my wife Christine if I started to feel dizzy or anything that I would stop. Even still, I played competitive volleyball TWICE and did a couple of Pilates/yoga classes with no problems to be concerned with. Although I was “spacey” on the volleyball court, I was able to perform quite well running, jumping, and blocking spikes on the front row! BRING IT!

BATHROOM RESPONSE TO THE FAST
Yes, I know it’s gross to talk about, but it was a part of the fasting experience. I expected to visit the porcelain goddess frequently in the first couple of days or so, but when I was still seeing massive amounts of “stuff” coming out late in the week during the fast, that was pretty freaky. It reminded me that there’s a lot more waste in the body than we even realize and doing this fast may have helped clean a good bit of that out.

SUPPLEMENTATION DURING THE FAST
I did not stop taking my regular supplements for the duration of the fast. I continued on with my multivitamin, Vitamin D3, magnesium, probiotics and other array of vitamins that have been a part of my healthy low-carb lifestyle for years. Perhaps I could have given this routine a rest for a week, too, but I didn’t.

MY METHODS FOR ENDURING THE FAST
This was my first attempt at fasting for longer than a day ever, so I didn’t have any idea what to expect beyond what I had heard from others. One of the challenges I found was how to ward off the symptoms of not eating anything. I was guzzling a lot of water throughout (very important for anyone fasting), but I decided I wanted more. So I added in some diet sodas again to help get me through. While I realize consuming diet soft drinks is controversial to some people who think you shouldn’t ever consume this stuff, it’s what I chose to do during my fast. Right or wrong, it’s what I did and I believe it helped me get through it. To me, it was most important to make it to the end of the seven days with non-caloric liquids throughout. I also used chicken bouillon cube broth after a few days on the fast as recommended by a dozen low-carb researchers and practitioners for electrolyte balance. It most definitely helped me feel revived and renewed when my energy started to wane. While I didn’t do this fast primarily for spiritual purposes, it certainly helped remind me to focus on the vital role God plays in my life on a daily basis.

THE REACTION FROM PEOPLE ABOUT MY FAST
When I started sharing my fasting experience and what I was doing on my menus blog, at Facebook and Twitter, on YouTube and elsewhere, the reaction I received was probably the most surprising part of this entire process. It ran all across the spectrum from encouraging words from people who thought this was a great idea and cheered me on all the way to people telling me I was killing myself and undermining the very low-carb lifestyle principles I promote. Wanna see just a small taste of what I’m talking about? Check out my favorite quotes both positive and negative from the fasting week:

And it seems I’ve inspired another low-carb blogger named Steve Cooksey to try a one-week fast, too:

GO GET ‘EM STEVE! It’s interesting to see how quickly his fasting blood sugar numbers have fallen.

WHAT WOULD I HAVE DONE DIFFERENTLY?
I hate to say I’d change anything about this first experience trying a one-week fast. The experience was what it was with all that I did. If I had it to do all over again (and perhaps I’ll try this again sometime), I’d go in one direction or another. Either a full-out water only fast or a coconut oil-based fast for some nourishment. I had on my protocol of things to do for this fast to add in coconut oil if the hunger became too much to bear. It never did, but I can’t help but think if the addition of coconut oil to the mix might have made a difference in the way I felt. It might have stoked some hunger, but maybe not. I guess that means I’ll need to try it again sometime and do it that way just to find out.

After the fast ended, I decided to write to the man who inspired this one-week fast–Dr. Seyfried himself–who I met in person at the Baltimore Nutrition & Metabolism Society Symposium the weekend before I started. When I told him what I had done, he said he was happy to hear I “survived” my fasting experience. Noting my concern about feeling bad on the final day of the fast, Dr. Seyfried said this “surprised” him because “most people who do the water-only fast feel good on Day 7″ and that blood glucose levels in the 50s are “good and should not make you feel bad.” He said the vitamins I took and bouillon may have sent “mixed signals to the body” which made it more difficult.

Dr. Seyfried noted that a cancer-preventing fast should probably be done using distilled water only and nothing else:

A therapeutic fast should not contain any nutrients. The body will release vitamins from fat and minerals from bones during the fast.

He explained that the weight loss on a one-week fast like this is mostly water weight because the fasting process depletes glycogen stores which retain most of the water in the body. Dr. Seyfried noted that there is some “minor” protein loss “especially if fat is mobilized” and he lamented that I didn’t measure blood ketone levels with a ketone meter like Medisense Xtra. He explains this is better than measuring ketones in the urine using Ketostix as is popular among low-carb dieters.

If your blood ketone levels are elevated then you are definitely burning fat.

I’ll be sure to do that the next time I do an extended fast. When I asked what this weeklong fasting does to cancer cells, he said the “damage to mitochondrial respiration is the origin of all cancers.”

Fasting will induce cellular autophagy thus allowing the cells of the body to consume damaged or defective mitochondria. Metabolism of ketone bodies will reduce damaging oxygen radicals while enhancing the metabolic efficiency of the mitochondria. Fasting prevents cancer by enhancing the metabolic efficiency of mitochondria and by eliminating damaged mitochondria.

With the diarrhea I experienced midway through my fast, Dr. Seyfried said this is “not expected” because it’s a way the body is cleansing itself of toxins. He recommended a book Herbert M. Shelton called Fasting for Renewal of Life that gets into the nitty gritty of what is happening when you fast. I’ll be sure to read this book before beginning my next fast. He reiterated the importance of consuming only distilled water or a small amount of non-caffeinated green tea. As for the vitamins I took during my fast, he said they are “not needed for short fasts (less than 20 days).” If a 20-day fast is short, then remind me not to try a long one!

He didn’t have an issue with me exercising during my fast “as long as it is not too extreme.”

I think walking is fine, but I am not sure about Pilates, volleyball or other types of vigorous exercise. Fasting is a time for rejuvenation and relaxation. Excessive exercise will prevent this and potentially harm the body. This might have accounted for some of your tiredness.

That’s a good point. Perhaps laying off the exercise just for the week of the fast would have been a better idea that trying to keep my regular routine up. I’ll remember that for the next time I attempt to do this. All in all, it was quite the education going through my first-ever one-week fasting experiment and I feel fantastic just a few days afterwards since I reintroduced food into my diet. I’m back to engaging in daily intermittent fasting of about 19 hours a day which doesn’t sound so daunting anymore after going a week without eating! I’d love to know what you think about this idea of fasting for a week, whether you think it helps or harms in the long run, and if you have or would ever try this for yourself. Leave your comments below! I expect a wide array of ideas and opinions and all are welcome here.

Whew, what a week it’s been getting back into my regular working schedule after a glorious quick weekend trip to Baltimore, Maryland last Saturday and Sunday to attend the 2011 Nutrition & Metabolism Society Symposium. This two-day event that piggybacks on The American Society of Bariatric Physicians (ASBP) conference took a closer look at some of the latest and greatest information about low-carb diets from the researchers and scientists who are studying this remarkable way of eating. I’ve had the distinct privilege to attend this event for each of the past six years and it’s always a great way to connect and interact with the actual professionals who are working behind-the-scenes to examine and prove the veracity of carbohydrate-restriction. These people deserve to be lauded for their courage to study low-carb diets in the face of immense opposition to this nutritional approach from the mainstream, conventional health community. I do believe that someday soon we’ll see mainstream medical professionals universally lauding the groundbreaking, cutting-edge work of people like Dr. Jeff Volek, Dr. Eric Westman, Dr. Steve Phinney, Dr. Mary Vernon, Dr. Richard Feinman, Dr. Jay Wortman, Dr. Eugene Fine, Dr. Thomas Seyfried, and so many other practitioners using low-carb diets with their patients for forging the way with the use of livin’ la vida low-carb to treat not just obesity, but many kinds of diseases as well.

At previous ASBP/N&M conferences we have usually flown in early to hear the last few lectures of the ASBP conference where they tend to have some outstanding speakers in the past like Gary Taubes, Brian Wansink, Mark Hyman and the like. This year they finished off the ASBP portion of the conference with childhood obesity researcher Dr. David Ludwig who has been a guest on my podcast in September 2010. I missed that one since we flew into Baltimore early on Saturday morning. It was such a quick trip, but completely LOADED with lots of excellent information which I shared via my Twitter feed all weekend. Dr. Mike Eades from Protein Power fame usually attends these N&M events, but he just welcomed another grandchild into the world and had to miss this one. He tweeted me about my LIVE updates from the conference saying, “Really spectacular job, Jimmy! Since I couldn’t be there, your tweets were the next best thing. Thanks very much.” It was my pleasure, Dr. Mike, to allow my readers an opportunity to feel like they were there and to benefit from the messages coming from the speakers! In fact, Dr. Westman who was moderating the N&M lectures told me at dinner that he got a kick out of me asking questions posed by people from my social networking sites. Ain’t modern technology amazing?!

There was one really strange thing that happened during the conference I have to share with you. I was pretty surprised by what happened when I got up to the microphone to ask my questions for the first time and introduced myself as “Jimmy Moore from Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb”–the audience members consisting of mostly physicians and nurses as well as a few educated laypeople started cheering with spontaneous applause when I said my name. Okay, that was really freaky to me, but I appreciated the sentiment. It let me know that the work I am doing IS making a difference in the lives of common, everyday people as well as people intimately involved in the health profession. In fact, afterwards I was approached by several doctors in the audience who wanted to know more about me and my work. COOL! I passed out a whole bunch of business cards and networked with lots of new people I hadn’t previously met all weekend. One of the attendees recognized me on Sunday morning and told me an incredible story about how my web site changed her life, helped her lose weight, and educated her further about how low-carb diets can work to help her patients. She said the doctor she works with LOVES low-carb living and is unashamed to use it therapeutically with his patients. It was genuinely gratifying to hear this registered nurse get so excited about livin’ la vida low-carb–and she knows firsthand that it works because it did for her! AWESOME STUFF!!!

There was so much information packed into the Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning lectures which focused primarily on ketones, ketogenic diets and their impact on various aspects of health that I could spends weeks writing it all out for you in a series of blog posts. Unfortunately, I don’t have the time to do that. But there were some true nuggets of information that I think would be beneficial to share with you as the take-home messages from the 2011 Nutrition & Metabolism Symposium in Baltimore. This isn’t a comprehensive list of everything monumental that was said, but hopefully it hits enough of the highlights to pique your curiosity. I’ll list the speaker and their topic and then provide bullet points to ponder:

Dr. Richard Feinman–“Review of Biochemistry of Ketone Bodies”

Ketones are the body’s preferred fuel (not carbs) because they are protein sparing

Energy doesn’t just come from carbohydrates–acetyl CoA provides it from fat and protein

Gluconeogenesis is a normal part of a fasted state–everyone experiences some form of it

Eating low-carb is “fed” starvation by mimicking it metabolically

Glucose can’t come from dietary fat but ketones bodies step in as the fuel source

Ketone bodies are glucose-sparing because it forces glucose to come from protein

Insulin falls significantly during starvation or low-carb diets

As ketones rise when carbs are reduced, insulin and glucose drops

Ketone bodies kick in to repress reliance on glycolysis by generating acetyl CoA for energy

Glucose can come from dietary carbs, glycogen or gluconeogenesis

Ketones are an alternative fuel the body can use for optimal health

Studies are needed to examine whether high-carb or low-carb diets are best for energy

Dr. Yoshihiro Kashiwaya–“Ketone Body Effects on Cardiac Energetics and Glycolytic Flux”

Ketone bodies form in the liver from free fatty acids released from body fat

Ketones are used as energy for the body in a fasting state

Sperm motility increases and brain function maintained on a ketogenic diet

Ketone bodies decrease oxygen consumption

Dr. Thomas Seyfried–“Ketone Bodies and Cancer”

Most brain tumors are untreatable and patients die from the pressure build-up

Calorie restriction is necessary for treating brain tumors

The mitochondria are dysfunctional in human brain tumors

Otto Warburg noted that cancer leads to irreversible damage

Tumor cells are unable to shift from feeding on glucose to ketones

Cancer is more of a metabolic disease than a genetic one

There’s an 80% reduction in tumor weight when calorie-restricted

Calorie-restriction one of the most powerful therapies for killing cancer cells

As glucose is decreased, cancer cells reduce as well

A low-carb, calorie-restricted diet is better than the best drug therapy for cancer

Ketogenic calorie-restricted diets have reduced brain tumors in mice and humans

Blood glucose remains too high on an unlimited calories low-carb diet to treat cancer

Calorie-restricted low-carb diets create adequate ketones for treating brain tumors

Ketogenic, calorie-restricted diets don’t cure cancer, but they come close

Tumors can’t grow when calories are cut to create ketones

Limiting carbs and calories puts you in the zone of managing tumor growth

Brain cancer in children can be treated with ketogenic diets by reducing glucose

Avoid radiation therapy if all all possible–ketogenic, calorie-restricted diet is best for cancer

Dr. Eugene Fine–“Reduced Carbohydrates in Aggressive Resistant Tumors (RECHARGE Trial)”

Not all cancers are dependent on glucose for growth, including prostate cancer

Hyperinsulinemia is a major cancer risk factor–that’s why reducing insulin in paramount

It’s plausible that reducing insulin secretion could inhibit cancer growth

The typical American diet contains 300-400g carbs daily–spiking insulin

Cut the carbs and you’ll cut the insulin and reduce your cancer risk

You don’t want an insulin knockout (Type 1 diabetes), but rather an insulin knockdown

A low-carb diet provides the proper control of insulin without eliminating the good it does

Reduced carb diets have not demonstrated adverse effects up to 2 years as a medical therapy

Humans were built as hunter-gatherers to be in a ketotic state most of the time

Fasting is in our ancestral biochemistry with no ill effects

There is no known dietary requirement for carbohydrate in your diet

Grains and vegetables are only a relatively recent addition to the human diet

A very low-carb diet changes the metabolic environment where cancer would grow

Too many people are living outside of a sustained ketogenic state leading to more cancer

RECHARGE Trial used very low-carb diet on 10 patients who failed on chemotherapy

The study placed the participants on a very low-carb ketogenic diet for 28 days

Average daily intake consumed by study patients was 27g carbs and 1236 daily

All of the study participants were ketotic

Future direction of research will be a larger study using ketogenic diets–funding needed

Dr. Stephen Phinney–“Human Keto-Adaptation: Physiology and Function”

Keto-adaptation (the term he coined) occurs when ketones become your body’s fuel source

Keto-adaptation can happen within 2-3 weeks of eating an 80/15/5 diet of fat/protein/carbs

Study of a very low-carb ketogenic diet and exercise found they exercise MORE

Another study of fit bike riders on very low-carb ketogenic diet led to negative nitrogen balance

When you eat low-carb, you change your body at the cellular level

Ketone bodies are an essential fuel for your organs

The future research on low-carb diets should observe renal ketone and urate excretion

Inflammation and fatty acid composition impact should also be closely examined

Why do low-carb diets fail? Fat-phobia or the wrong kind of fats consumed.

Dr. Jeff Volek–“Anti-Ketogenic Effect of Insulin and Dietary Carbohydrate”

Carbs raise insulin which leads to dyslipidemia and chronic health issues

Insulin promote anabolism and regulates blood sugar levels

The primary source of glucose is the liver through glycogen breakdown and gluconeogenesis

Insulin promotes the uptake of glucose

Muscle glycogen synthesis in diabetics is 50% less than normal healthy people

Insulin resistance is the reduced ability of peripheral tissues to respond to insulin

The most potent blocker of lipolysis is insulin

Elevated insulin make it difficult to break down fat–and carbs raise insulin the most

Low-carb diet is best for breaking down fat as compared with a high-carb diet

Insulin is very easy to manipulate through the diet

Fat has no impact on insulin, protein a little, but carbs have a HUGE impact

There are only about 2 teaspoons of sugar circulating in the body

The average meal Americans eat contains 10X the amount of sugar in the body

Concern over carb consumption is regarding the sugar spike then crash–hypoglycemia

Avoiding hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia as a metabolic state is critical to health

When you consume carbs, it is stored as glycogen until full then converted to body fat

Carb consumption leads to large VLDL cholesterol which increase small LDL particles

Small LDL-P is the most dangerous kind of cholesterol to form in your body

Low-carb diets significantly reduce the amount of small LDL particles in the body

Fructose consumption is popular for product properties and low cost

We grow a lot of corn in the United States, so we put it in the food supply

Fructose has a very high propensity to be converted to fat

Consuming fructose leads to obesity, fatty liver, dyslipidema, and metabolic syndrome

Eating low-carb is especially good for athletes before exercise

Using fat for fuel enhances athletic performance

The old paradigm for post-exercise is to carb up–new paradigm is no carbs or slow ones

Many pro athletes are eating an Atkins-like diet for optimal performance

Athletes now realize that having elevated insulin is not good for them

A high-carb diet after exercise may diminish the benefits of exercise on heart health

Protein synthesis post-exercise is not enhanced by mixing protein and carbs for recovery

Skip the carbs and simply eat fat and protein for your post-workout meal

Study comparing low-carb diet over 12 weeks with exercise found 5.3% body fat decrease

Study participants did not experience fatigue, lost significant fat, grew muscle eating low-carb

The obligate nature of carbohydrates for athletes has been overblown and is unnecessary

Dr. Mary Vernon–“Clinical Treatments Using Nutritional Ketosis”

Metabolic health is not about how much you weigh but rather the fuel source

She’s learned from her patients that health is much more important than weight

Regularly puts patients on 20g carbs daily–mostly eggs, meat and hard cheeses

Don’t let yourself get hungry

If you eat preventatively by the clock then you’ll resist temptation to high-carb foods

Study of low-carb to low-fat with drugs found equal weight loss, better lipid improvements

Just because you aren’t fat doesn’t mean you aren’t metabolically obese

Thin isn’t necessarily healthy if your lipids are out of whack

Fatty acids and protein can produce all the glucose your body needs for energy

Ketone bodies can be used with virtually anyone without concern

Your body either makes cholesterol or it makes ketone bodies

When low-fat diet do not improve lipid health, doctors blame patients for failure

That’s why more and more medications are prescribed for “non-compliant” patients

Dietary fat doesn’t lead to fat on the body–patients need to learn this ASAP

Control glucose/insulin metabolism to prevent free radical formation and tissue destruction

The benefits to being ketotic is converting your body to burning fat for fuel

Improving brain function and decreasing oxidative stress are other benefits of ketosis

Adiposity isn’t the primary reason for eating low-carb

Getting your lipid and blood sugar health under control is the reason for low-carbing

If low-carb was a prescription drug, every doctor would be putting their patients on it

Ketogenic diets don’t necessarily lead to kidney stones–fix with potassium citrate

Two liters of urinary output daily will prevent kidney stone formation from happening

Kids especially who are eating low-carb need to be adequately hydrated

Get electrolyte support by supplementing low-carb diet with sodium and magnesium

Bouillon broth helps prevent fatigue, headaches, and muscle cramps early on a low-carb diet

When starting low-carb while on medications, doses may need adjusting as diet improves health

Find a good doctor who will monitor your health for you as you begin on low-carb

Diabetics who start low-carb should only stay on metformin–decrease insulin use with doctor

Low-carb can be done long-term with no ill effects–it just plain works

Dr. Adam Hartman–“The Ketogenic Diet for Epilepsy”

One in 20 Americans have had a seizure at some point in their life

One in 100 are currently being treated for epilepsy

There’s no known cause for epilepsy

Aging population with strokes, dementia, trauma and tumors have increased the numbers

Medication is only sporadic at controlling seizures

Fasting and a high-fat, low-carb, low-calorie diet controls seizures

Metabolism-based therapies are needed to control epilepsy–ketogenic diet most of all

Epileptic kids would much rather have a pat of butter than a sugary jelly bean

We can’t assume what kids with epilepsy will or will not eat

Moderate to severe epilepsy responds well to a ketogenic diet

If an epileptic child doesn’t metabolize fat well, they shouldn’t eat a ketogenic diet

2008 study published in The Lancet showed effectiveness of ketogenic diet for seizures

Most kids have been on 6 medications before they try the ketogenic diet

Drugs are significantly reduced or eliminated when ketogenic diet therapy is used

There are side effects of ketogenic diet when used as a treatment for epilepsy

Intermittent fasting has been shown to work better than ketogenic diet for seizure control

The kind of ketone body for seizure control is important

Acute acetoacetane and acetone are both anticonvulsants

Ketosis appears to be necessary but not sufficient for the ketogenic diet’s anticonvulsant effect

Previous research shows cognitive improvements on a ketogenic diet for Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s

A high-fat, low-carb diet powers the brain to function optimally

Ketone bodies provide an alternative metabolic pathway for disease treatment

Ketogenic diet is an underutilized therapy for treating epilepsy

Ketones have been shown to be anticonvulsant and neuroprotective

Hopefully this gives you just a small taste of what the Baltimore conference was like and encourages you to do further research on these concepts for yourself. In case you are wondering, all of these lectures will be available in audio and video format at the ASBP web site in a few months. Call them up and tell them you heard about these Nutrition & Metabolism lectures and that you want to reserve your copy. They’ll be happy to take care of you. And by all means, please consider becoming a member and making a donation to the great work of The Nutrition & Metabolism Society presenting this quality scientific information year after year. If the research continues, then it’ll put us one step closer to having low-carb embraced by physicians which then trickles down to their patients. One step at a time, we’re making livin’ la vida low-carb more and more mainstream. Keep the momentum going by passing this information on!

In attempts to “get healthy” some think that just substituting table sugar with something else “natural” or “organic” is a big step, and for some it will be.

However, let’s put to rest all the chatter about the ”natural” sweeteners and artificial sweeteners that may sound as if they are actually good for you or okay to ingest.

Let’s start with the artificial sweeteners:

SWEET’N LOW (SACCHARINE/CYCLAMATE)–Here’s theme that is recurring – Perform laboratory tests using toxic hazardous chemicals, spill it on your hand, taste it, give it a name and use it in processed foods as a sweetener! Sounds like the “Crisco” model!

Saccharin - In 1879 researchers were at Johns Hopkins University were working on toluene derivatives. Toluene is produced in the process of making gasoline from crude oil and in making coke from coal. Exposure to high levels can cause unconsciousness and even death according to the U.S. Government’s Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry under the classification of hazardous.

One of the researchers spilled some of the toluene derivative on his hand while doing his research that day and later that night while at dinner noticed that his food tasted oddly sweet. He traced the taste back to the chemicals he was researching that day and named the substance “saccharin” after the word saccharide, which means complex sugar.

Saccharin–a toluene derivative? A Derivative of the same toluene used to make nail polish, rubber, paint, and paint thinners, etc., just to add no calorie sweetener to food? Seriously?

Cyclamate – In 1937 a graduate student from the University of Illinois was trying to synthesize fever reducing drugs in the lab. He laid his cigarette down on a lab bench and when he took another puff he discovered the sweet taste of cyclamate from the antipyretic drugs he had on his fingers.

Sweet’N Low was originally the first powdered no calorie sweetener and blended 10:1 ratio of cyclamate to saccharine. After all of the disputes over cyclamates, Sweet’N Low today is a blend of saccharin and dextrose.

SUCRALOSE SPLENDA): Splenda was invented by scientists trying to find a better pesticide. One Scientist said to the other , “test it,” but the other scientist thought he said “TASTE II” and so he did and found that it was sweet.

A very dangerous new chemical — because in order to make sucralose, chlorine is added to sugar! Research by the Sucralose Toxicity Information Center showed that years of sucralose use can lead to serious compromise of the immune system and neurological disorders.

Splenda is only “made from sugar” because they took a sugar molecule and substituted three of its atoms with chlorine. Chlorine when ingested in your body turns to methanol then in turn gets absorbed as formaldehyde. Isn’t that interesting? Formaldehyde–that’s for embalming, right? Just think you can preserve yourself while you kill yourself!

“The manufacturer’s own short-term studies showed that very high doses of sucralose (far beyond what would be expected in an ordinary diet) caused shrunken thymus glands, enlarged livers, and kidney disorders in rodents. A more recent study also shows that Splenda significantly decreases beneficial gut flora.

As a side note, more than 90% of my clients have compromised guts (intestines). Whether parasites, candida, toxicity, or poor bowel function, your health does begin in the gut. In fact, at least 80% of your immune system is in your intestines! Why would you want to do anything to compromise that?

“But in this case, the FDA decided that because these studies weren’t based on human test animals, they were not conclusive. Of course, rats had been chosen for the testing specifically because they metabolize sucralose more like humans than any other animal used for testing.

In other words, the FDA has tried to have it both ways — they accepted the manufacturer’s studies on rats because the manufacturer had shown that rats and humans metabolize the sweetener in similar ways, but shrugged off the safety concerns on the grounds that rats and humans are different.”

Sucralose has been implicated as a possible migraine trigger, for example. Self-reported adverse reactions to Splenda or sucralose collected by the Sucralose Toxicity Information Center include skin rashes/flushing, panic-like agitation, dizziness and numbness, diarrhea, swelling, muscle aches, headaches, intestinal cramping, bladder issues, and stomach pain. These show up at one end of the spectrum — in the people who have an allergy or sensitivity to the sucralose molecule. But no one can say to what degree consuming Splenda affects the rest of us, and there are no long-term studies in humans with large numbers of subjects to say one way or the other if it’s safe for everyone.

ASPARTAME (NUTRI-SWEET, EQUAL)

Aspartate (main ingredient in Nutrisweet/Equal) in simplistic terms, causes the brain neurons to constantly fire – that’s why it’s called an excitotoxin – these neurons actually keep firing and are literally excited to death.

Aspartame is so much sweeter than sugar that frequent consumption can lead people to actually consume more calories. I’ve always said, “fat people drink diet-coke!” The truth is… “phenylalanine and aspartic acid, the amino acids which make up the bulk of aspartame, are known to rapidly stimulate the release of insulin and leptin, which are hormones that signal the body to store fat…” Sweet Deception by Dr. Mercola

Glutamate (MSG, hydrolyzed vegetable protein, Glutamaic acid, etc.)is also an amino acid and does exactly the same thing as Aspartate with respect to brain cells. “Likewise, exposing neurons to glutamate or aspartate can induce paired helical filaments very similar to those seen in naturally occurring Alzheimer’s disease…” (Excitotoxins, The Taste That Kills by Russell L. Blaylock, MD)

Sadly in a child’s brain, the constant firing of neurons and death of brain cells causes irreversible damage!

“Aspartame accounts for over 75 percent of the adverse reactions to food additives reported to the FDA. Many of these reactions are very serious including seizures and death.(1) A few of the 90 different documented symptoms listed in the report as being caused by aspartame include: Headaches/migraines, dizziness, seizures, nausea, numbness, muscle spasms, weight gain, rashes, depression, fatigue, irritability, tachycardia, insomnia, vision problems, hearing loss, heart palpitations, breathing difficulties, anxiety attacks, slurred speech, loss of taste, tinnitus, vertigo, memory loss, and joint pain.

According to researchers and physicians studying the adverse effects of aspartame, the following chronic illnesses can be triggered or worsened by ingesting of aspartame:(2) Brain tumors, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, chronic fatigue syndrome, parkinson’s disease, alzheimer’s, mental retardation, lymphoma, birth defects, fibromyalgia, and diabetes…” Mercola

Don’t you just wonder why people keep drinking toxic chemicals every time you see someone drinking a diet soda??? They are better off with HFCF!!!!

NEOTAME – Monsanto developed a new version of aspartame which is 72 times sweeter than aspartame and called neotame. Neotame is chemically related aspartame and is 7 to 13 thousand times sweeter than sugar, stable at high heat and not broken down in the body into the amino acid phenylalanine. Neotame is aspartame plus 3-di-methyl-butyl, which is on the EPA’s list of most hazardous chemicals. Wow! What an improvement over aspartame! I just bet that it is being used in processed foods under some mysterious ingredient name…

SUGAR ALCOHOLS – XYLOTOL, MANNITOL, SORBITOL, MALTITOL, ISOMALT, LACTITOL, TAGATOSE ERYTHITOL-Sugar alcohols are found naturally in low levels in some raw fruits and vegetables and don’t cause problems in their raw state.

However, the sugar alcohols (Polyols) manufactured are quite different in the way the body reacts to them. Most sugar alcohols are not considered GRAS (generally regarded as safe) under food and beverage law, but are allowed under the American cosmetic, flavor, and pharmaceutical regulations. They can cause the following adverse side effects at only 1½ teaspoons per day and some polyols have been linked directly to malignant tumor activity:

Bloating

Gastrointestinal distress

Diarrhea

Anal leakage

These symptoms are particularly dangereous in infants, children, diabetics, hyperinsulinemics of hypoglycemic, pregnamt women, seniors and many other health compromised people.

Don’t sugar alcohols sound too good to be true? You would think it’s a miracle sugar substitute in all the hype. From Dr. Mercola in Sweet Deception, “… However, even though sugar alcohols do not raise your blood sugar levels as much as table sugar, they do raise them.
Sugar alcohols can also be converted to fat, and may contribute to an increase in blood triglyceride levels and weight gain. The exception to this rule is erythritol, which does not appear to raise blood sugars, but unfortunately also has inferior sweetening power.”

Studies have shown that of the sugar alcohols xylitol is probably the best because of the health benefits associated with it, such as the benefit of preventing tooth decay and ear infections, however, it is still a manufactured, manipulated product.

Let’s face it – sugar is sugar and the food industry is constantly trying to “candy-coat” the fact that sugar is still sugar, no matter what you call it and it still is and always will be very harmful to the body.

SUGAR - Table sugar, cane sugar, etc. is made of 50% glucose and 50% fructose. It is recognized by the body as a simple sugar, and it can deal with it, albeit it is stressful to deal with but it does nonetheless. Too much sugar can lead to diabetes, which will lead to heart disease, renal disease, pripheral vascular disease, diabetic retinitis (blindness), diabetic peripheral neuropathy , etc.

FRUCTOSE – It’s natural sugar found in fruits, right? So it should be okay to use as a sugar replacement. WRONG! Any type of fructose is very dangerous – it essentially sends the message to the liver to store fat. That’s why we eat fruit in season and with some type of a fat for a buffer. The fruit is complete with fiber as well as the fructose. Please see my earlier blog, Fruit will make you Fat. Remember, fructose raises triglyceride levels and lowers HDL levels among other things.

FRUCTO-OLIGOSACCHARIDES (FOS) – a type of soluable fiber and is not very sweet and is usually mixed with other more intense sweeteners. Since it is indigestible, it can cause digestive distress including gas and bloating when eaten excessively.

Sadly, because of the misleading labeling in the health foods industry, generally when you see FOS on the label it’s probably really fructose mislabeled in order to deceive you into believing the product is sugar free.

HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP – We all know it is bad, and to reiterate, in addition to being genetically modified corn, it is anywhere from 42% to 45% glucose and 55% – 58/% fructose. The acid enzyme procedure used to manufacture it aside, your body doesn’t readily recognize the new structure, and that’s where the mayhem begins—that extra punch of fructose.

AGAVE NECTAR – Can be 55 percent to 90 percent fructose, depending on brand!

In spite of manufacturer’s claims, most agave “nectar” is not made from the sap of the yucca or agave plant but from its pineapple-like root bulb[i]. The root has a complex carbohydrate called inulin, which is made up of fructose molecules.

The process which many, if not most, agave producers use to convert this inulin into “nectar” is VERY similar to the process by which cornstarch is converted into HFCS1.

Though processing methods can differ among manufacturers, most commercially available agave is converted into fructose-rich syrup using genetically modified enzymes and a chemically intensive process involving caustic acids, clarifiers, and filtration chemicals [ii]. Here is a partial list of the chemicals many producers use:

Activated charcoal

Cationic and ionic resins

Sulfuric and/or hydrofluoric acid

Dicalite

Clarimex

Inulin enzymes

Fructozyme

How natural does this sound?

Anyway, of the “good” agave syrups here’s a breakdown of three:

Fructose is Fructose, People!

GLUCOSE- (dextrose) – You can get dextrose for about $1 a pound at the health food store. It does not affect the liver the way fructose does. Glucose does not cause insulin resistance or trick your body into persistant hunger the way fructose does.

Except for individuals with full blown- diabetes, glucose does not trigger harmful metabolic changes! It is okay to use sparingly, and is only about 70% as sweet as sucrose so you’ll end up using a bit more of it for the same amount of sweetness, making it slightly more expensive than sucrose—but still well worth it for your health as it has ZERO grams of fructose. You need to get from reputable source, as it is can be a corn derivative and you want to make sure it is not genetically modified.

Remember, glucose can be used directly by every cell in your body and as such is far safer than the metabolic poison fructose.

HONEY – Don’t be fooled and misled – honey packs a punch in that it can contain as much as fructose or more than HFCS.

MOLASSES – has a high fructose content, though not as much as honey. Molasses has 5.5 grams of fructose per 1 tablespoon and honey for same amount is 8.8 grams of fructose! If you are trying to keep your total daily fructose consumption down at 25, this is pretty high at 1 tablespoon!

PURE MAPLE SUGAR SYRUP,–By composition, this sugar is about 90% sucrose (remember sucrose is 50% glucose 50% fructose), the remainder consisting of variable amounts of glucose and fructose. Extreme caution should be taken when choosing a maple syrup, using brands that are organic or guaranteed not to use formaldehyde . Formaldehyde is used in the production of mose commercial brands of pure maple syrup!

FRUIT JUICE CONCENTRATE, ETC. – When I see these sweeteners, I cringe –concentrated fructose as main component. The juice is particularly bad because it is almost pure concentrated fructose without the benefit of the fiber of the fruit! How is that healthy?

BROWN RICE SYRUP – made by fermenting brown rice with chemical enzymes, followed by centrifuging, filtering and purifying to a dextrose consistency. As you can imagine, all nutrition has been stripped and it is mostly maltose with half the sweetness of sugar.

LO HAN KUO – fruit of the momordica grosvenori, a plant in the cucumber and melon family the extracts of which can be 250 time sweeter than sugar and tastes like black licorice.

Lo Han has been used for centuries I Traditional Chinese Medicine to improve skin conditions, sore throats, coughs, purifying the blood and regulating the digestive tract. Lo Han is actually processed less than stevia, can be heated, can control food and sugar cravings, and like stevia has no calories or sugar.

STEVIA – Stevia rebaudiana A plant whose leaves when dried are very sweet—up to 300 times as sweet as sugar. It is a genus of about 240 species of herbs and shrubs in the sunflower family and native to tropical and subtropical regions from western North America to South America.

Stevia gives almost no glycemic response and has been used in Japan for decades. The US banned Stevia in the early 1990s unless labeled as a supplement, but in 2008 approved rebaudioside A extrct as a food additive.

From Wikipedia, “In terms of weight fraction, the four major steviol glycosides found in the stevia plant tissue are:

5–10% stevioside (250–300X of sugar)

2–4% rebaudioside A — most sweet (350–450X of sugar) and least bitter

1–2% rebaudioside C

½–1% dulcoside A.

Rebaudioside B, D, and E may also be present in minute quantities; however, it is suspected that rebaudioside B is a byproduct of the isolation technique. [2] The two majority compounds stevioside and rebaudioside, primarily responsible for the sweet taste of stevia leaves, were first isolated by two French chemists in 1931…

Rebiana is the trade name[4] for a zero-calorie sweetener containing mainly rebaudioside A (also called Reb A).[5] Truvia is the consumer brand for Rebiana marketed by Cargill and developed jointly with The Coca-Cola Company.[6] PureVia is PepsiCo‘s brand of Reb A sweetener. Enliten is Corn Products International‘s brand of Reb A sweetener.”

Stevia is the preferred sweetener to use, but only in the natural “supplement” form, not isolated, manipulated and manufactured by a company as cited above!

DATE SUGAR – dehydrated dates ground into powder and is 85% sucrose. See maple syrup above.

SUCCANT AND TURBINADO SUGARS – Succant is a contraction of “Sucre de canne naturel”, which was introduced by Pronatec in 1978 and is a brand name for whole cane sugar. Unlike refined and processed white sugar, Sucanat retains its molasses content; it is essentially pure dried sugar cane juice. The juice is extracted by mechanical processes, heated and cooled at which point the small brown grainy crystals are formed.

Sucanat may be confused with turbinado sugar; however, the two are fundamentally different. Turbinado sugar contains only a trace amount of its original molasses content, making it similar to refined sugar except with a golden color and a hint of molasses flavor. Sucanat, on the other hand, retains its full molasses content and flavor, thus making it, as stated above, pure dried cane juice. Its grainy form also contrasts with the clear, crystalline form of turbinado. BUT IT IS STILL SUGAR!

I think that when you look at the pros and cons of the choices of sweeteners, the best choices are self-evident.

Just Water?

I’ve been taking an unexpected journey on the healing path. A few years ago, a woman suggested I check out Kangen water and I didn’t because I got the sense from this person that she was just trying to recruit me. So, I made a mental note but moved on. After all, I’d found a natural, whole food supplement that had greatly improved the quality of my life, was finally prescription-free, and I had been learning about the drawbacks of drinking too much water. Real food, purposeful fasting, and proper supplementation seemed to be the most important building blocks in my new foundation of good health. Surely I didn’t have to worry about proper hydration or detoxification and healing. Surely I was already learning about these things, I thought. I had no idea!

Well, my husband started bringing this kangen water home with him and my reaction was, “Hey I want to try it too!” He told me to expect detoxification and to drink it consistently. Little did I know that a few months later I would find myself at the gym without my water. At the time I thought I’d probably break-down and drink some water there. Uh-uh. Out of the question! I was also driving 50 miles round trip twice a week to get enough for us and a friend of mine who was recovering from a fight with cancer.

Kangen is a Japanese word that means “return to source”. It is not just ionized and alkaline, but the molecules are microclustered (about 6 together instead of 2 or 3 times that with tap or bottled waters) to actually penetrate the cell membranes to cleanse and hydrate properly. Another positive attribute is it’s extremely high anti-oxidant value upon drawing the water. So why was I personally going to all this effort to drink it? Well, the water was the only thing I changed in my diet and eating habits. The result for me personally has been(over 7-8 months) a continuing cleansing and detoxification that goes through stages—I’m still going through it, but the most astonishing thing has been that I almost never got sick through cold and flu season with 2 small children. I’ve heard many remarkable, nearly miraculous healing stories, but for me this was the real point where I could not deny an enormous benefit. My very expensive supplement goes twice as far, as well, insofar as its effectiveness and necessary daily amount are concerned. So, right there it’s saved me $150 a month, which to me is neither here nor there where my health is concerned. I feel a clarity of mind and spirit which I haven’t felt before.

I got this water for free. Enagic is the company that makes the machines that work the magic. Yes, there are ionizers that are ½ as much money but you cannot clean them and they usually need replacement after 2 years, whereas Enagic has been making these machines for over 30 years and the machines last from 15-25 years if you take care of them properly. Another bit of mis-information I had was that you have to spend $4000 to get a machine. Well, we got our water for free for months before we decided to buy one, and the machines start at $1280 and go up to, for the large-capacity unit for restaurants and spas, $5900. That’s a lot of surgical-grade platinum, though! The company offers generous financing so the price is really not that enormous of an issue. Each machine is hand made by one technician in the Osaka factory. There are no outsourced materials or parts, either. You get what you pay for. It’s for your health. A cheap imitation can actually be dangerous—and then you’re still out a lot of money!

While I was getting the water from my friends I went to a demonstration to learn more. This is very important—in fact it’s where I gained access to a wealth of information, medical, historical, and scientific that I would not have otherwise known. As always, with your health, it’s important to be as well-informed as possible. When I could actually see the properties of this water demonstrated before me, and the properties of other waters and also soda, I was not only amazed but I could understand and confirm my actual experiences with it. It was helpful to be able to ask questions of other people who had been drinking it for a long time.

I am reporting about this because I didn’t realize that I was not properly hydrated! I’d be very thirsty after a long run and would often feel sick after drinking water, not to mention bloated. This is not the case now at all. When I do a small fast I find myself incredibly refreshed throughout. I have not met anyone who drinks this water who would be willing to go a day without it if they didn’t have to. So, I’ve found foundation block #4, and that would be water. Our bodies are comprised of water, mostly; why wouldn’t it be important after all?

For more information online, go to www.checkoutkangen.com, which is not associated with any distributor, or www.enagic.com. My personal site is www.xanetplanet.info, which explores more the various household applications of the water. The machine makes acidic waters, which disinfect without toxic chemicals, and strong kangen water (highly alkaline) which you don’t drink, but will emulsify oil and dirt effectively, and so forth.

For info about their use in Japanese hospitals, go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SvsDXjA4dzg This is shocking but definitely worth seeing.

Many blessings on your healing journey, and of course,

With all of the uncertainty and conflicting reports regarding the Japan nuclear facility explosions, I think that the following article is very timely. The fact that the US has placed over 100 machines to test radiation levels here in the States is very telling, even though we are told it’s nothing to worry about, because it is “very low levels” being recorded, if any.

It is those “very low levels” that can be most damaging as you can read from the following excerpt.

There is an herbal product that I recommend to my clients that contains “food” for the thyroid; dulse, kelp and irish moss. I use it for both under and active thyroid conditions and you will read references to these ingredients below.

The following article came from the DNR web site. I felt it best to just copy it so that none of the information would be watered down or omitted. You can acces the site through my web site www.1stopherbshop.com for further information or contact me directly.

“We recently came across a website that had us fascinated. It focuses on a book, “The Regeneration Effect – Overcoming Advanced Stages of Cancer and other Chronic Degenerative Diseases” written by Dr. John Apsley, II, MD(E), DC in 1996. This website contains an overwhelming amount of information bundled together in a rambling jumble that jumps all over the place. With that said we do believe Dr. Apsley and his associates have a noble intent by publishing this site and are on the money with their philosophies and recommended health remedies. After reviewing this site, we were pleased to realize how closely his knowledge and experience come to being compatible with DNR, Inc. philosophies and modalities. The following excerpt on Radiation Toxicity Antidotes is not only educational, but timely as well.

Radiation Toxicity Antidotesby John W. Apsley, II, MD(E), DC Q: What can I do now to protect myself from nuclear fall-out arriving from the meltdown of Japan’s nuclear power plants?

A: History has taught us to “hope for the best,” but “plan for the worst” and to educate oneself better than the politicians or their official scientific spokespersons!

The radioactive metals uranium, plutonium, cesium and strontium are of primary concern, right alongside radioactive iodide. Once lodged into our tissues, all will induce lethal tissue ionization, which over decades will derange genetic functions and kill many cells. To avoid this, the metals need to be removed from the cells. Specifically over the long term, radioactive cesium will concentrate in the fatty tissues, radioactive iodine in the thyroid gland and ovaries, strontium and uranium in the bone, and uranium and plutonium in the liver. For North America, over time this may/will lead to significantly greater levels of cancer or alternative forms of chronic degenerative disease in our children and young adults via the Petkau Effect.

The Petkau Effect may be illustrated as follows:

A long term exposure of extremely low radiation (i.e., one-ten millionth of a rad) was found to be 100 BILLION times MORE lethal than a short term exposure to exceedingly high level radiation (i.e., 10,000 rads per minute). As it turns out, Petkau discovered that at exceedingly high radiation levels, the abundant free radicals generated in tissues tended to cancel each other out before they could do cellular damage. But at extremely low levels of radiation, these same free radicals – produced in minuscule quantities – remain unchecked. And any steady stream of unchecked free-radicals will efficiently and lethally cleave lipid cellular membranes like a hot knife slicing through butter once they overwhelm and exhaust cellular antioxidant defenses. This dramatically illustrates the non-linear aspects of dose (rads) to lethality. Most scientists specializing in the field of nuclear medicine are unaware of this fact. And most think strictly in terms of genetic damage, while the above presents its lethal affects upon cell membranes and only secondarily to the genetic core.

Eclectic physicians often specialize in BioEnergetics, the Fourth Pillar to The Regeneration Effect. And what these experts will tell you is that select low levels of radiation that disrupt cell membranes will trigger attempts in tissues to regenerate the damage, which is termed autophagy. Just enough autophagy with just enough antioxidants and reserves of their respective substrates (building blocks) and other essential factors like oxygen and you are “In like Flint.” But too much autophagy with too little antioxidants or when coupled to conditions of hypoxia (low oxygen levels), and you start generating vast numbers of premature cellular deaths, and over the longer term cancer or devastating autoimmune disease. Most folks over 50 have under saturated tissue levels of oxygen, so this is something we need to keep in mind. Additionally, other stores of environmental toxins or unhelpful lifestyles which include the standard American diet and smoking will ensure low level radiation exposure can only increase risks to chronic degenerative diseases down the road. Perhaps most importantly, radioactive iodide may easily disrupt thyroid function permanently. With chronic lower thyroid hormone production, the risk to many chronic degenerative diseases dramatically goes up. Unfortunately, conventional medicine has failed to date to adequately appraise low thyroid conditions, so this only compounds inadequacies in statistical analysis.

What we must all do now is to fortify our internal cellular milieu and bring online our very own Regeneration Effect within. So let’s begin…

SHORT TERM ANTIDOTES:

1. N-Acetyl-Cysteine (NAC) is the most powerful short term quencher of ionizing radiation. It is a nutrient, a simple amino acid from protein. For adults (weighing above 150lbs) , it may be taken in dosages of up to 500mg daily for protection from toxic metals and other poisons. For younger adults weighing 100lbs to 149lbs, 400mg daily affords adequate protection in most situations. In children weighing less than 100lbs, but above 50lbs, 200mg daily is a suitable dose. For infants, toddlers or children weighing less than 50lbs, 50mg to 100mg daily may be used in juice, as long as no sensitivity to NAC arises (i.e., light skin rashes). In this manner, NAC may be used daily on an indefinite basis, as it is a harmless amino acid our bodies will use to establish antioxidant defenses and aid the immune system. It is also an adequate remover (i.e., chelator – from the Greek which means that which “grabs onto or claws into”) of toxic metals from the body, such as radioactive cobalt and directly and indirectly uranium. Uranium is quite stubborn about exiting without a fight and could require baking soda to speed things up – see references at very end of page – plus melatonin. Liver protection from fall-out radioisotopes like uranium, plutonium, etc… is nicely accomplished via combining NAC + Sea Vegetables (see next) + Melatonin + Selenium + small amounts of baking soda (see number 7 below for all advisories). Lastly – rarely some adults are sensitive to NAC, so be aware of special advisories regarding its long term use. In those cases, use high-quality Whey products.

2. Iodide is also a first line of defense mineral supplement, since it can out-compete radioactive iodide from entering into our bodies.11 Despite misinformation to the contrary, if you have no known allergy to shellfish or iodide, rationale supplementation with iodide can be a good thing. Remember, it is an essential nutrient our bodies must have every day to make adequate levels of essential hormones. Up to 1,000mcg daily are used for several short weeks from various sources, such as Kelp, Irish Moss or Dulse. For adults, up to 5 tablets per meal of any one of these may be wise. Rarely, some folks suffer fully reversible mild hair loss by taking iodide. By simply discontinuing the supplement for several days, this problem typically clears and resuming iodide intake at lower levels (200mcg-400mcg/day) usually does not bring back the problem. In the rare event any intake of iodide causes resumption of hair loss, substitute Chlorella or Spirulina below. Kelp and other seaweeds are also excellent chelators of toxic metals from the body, especially if high fiber intake is also being incorporated into the diet.

3. Chlorella (and other blue green algae) is a superior protector and chelator of radioactive metals from the body and contains no less than 20 superior neutralizers to radioactive poisons. 5 per meal (250mg each or 1250mg per meal) is a great dose for adults, 3 per meal for young adults and children, and 1 per meal for the very young. Make sure the Chlorella brand you buy has the outer cell wall “cracked” for best absorption. More may be taken, but it is suggested to never exceed 40 tablets daily for adults. Spirulina is a very acceptable cheaper alternative, although the taste is more objectionable for children.

4. High quality bone meal (rich in Calcium & Strontium Hydroxyapatite) will also protect against radioactive strontium poisoning and penetration of uranium into bone. 3 per meal as labeled is suggested for adults, young adults and children, and 1-2 per meal for the very young.

5. Natural Vitamin E Complex - To stop cell membrane destruction. 800iu per day is an excellent dose for average adults, and 400iu per day for young adults and children. Toddlers and infants may be given 100iu per day in juice. (Side Note: Krill Oil, CoQ10(H) and Melatonin are more powerful than Vit. E, but also more expensive.)

6. Consuming High fiber and seaweed dishes on a regular basis must be used to maximize the best effects of the above tools. These will help insure removal (chelation) of toxic radioactive metals from the body.

7. Baking soda – Should be taken only on rare occasions, that is, only if exposures to uranium or plutonium can be confirmed, even in trace amounts, for your area. Baking soda is an efficient means to remove these metals quickly (especially uranium). There are several medical conditions which contradict taking baking soda, so be sure you have doctor’s clearance before consuming baking soda. Taking baking soda once weekly should pose no health threat if no other medical conditions are present which require restriction of sodium intake. For adults with no medical contraindications, and who have good reason to believe they have been exposed to traces of radioactive fall-out, especially uranium, taking 1 teaspoon of baking soda in 1 cup water or juice up to seven (7) times daily on an empty stomach – on one day out of every seven days – may be warranted. If you have a day of fasting each week, or one of light eating, this would be the perfect day to perform this procedure; but again, only if it has been confirmed you were likely exposed to extremely low levels of the radioactive heavy metals such as uranium. Please see the long list of abstracts regarding baking soda as an effective chelator of radioactive elements at the very end of this document).

DNR, Inc. continues to field calls from so many people across the country about this issue. The article recommends many natural remedies that will help the body deal with exposure to radiation. Remember, we are constantly being bombarded with radiation everyday of our lives. Maybe not from nuclear plant radiation leaks, but from regular run of the mill environmental radiation such as power lines, microwave towers, cell phones, computers etc. The supplements suggested throughout the article could add up to a pretty hefty hit to the pocketbook when purchased separately. Not to mention the risk of supplement overload. The safe and natural energies of everything recommended can be found in DNR’s Immune System Booster PAK , CAN PAK and other Liquid Signals® formula combinations. Also, when the need arises for extrication of toxins, the DNR Synergy Simplified Solution that applies to all DNR Protocols is the safest and most effective means to naturally detox. We talk about keeping the immune system strong and ready for the unexpected exposure to bacteria, viruses or even radiation.

Last February, I shared with you about a decision made by the executives of the world’s largest health food supermarket chain Whole Foods beginning to aggressively promote a low-fat, vegetarian diet with their “Health Starts Here” campaign. Interestingly, they’re not trying to hide what they are doing either as you can see on this page of their web site outlining their “Four Pillars Of Health Eating” with the call for customers to become “Plant-Strong” by making vegetables the centerpiece of their diet. Their list of 10 Easy Steps To Make A Fresh Start heavily promotes salads, whole grains, vegetables, fruits, legumes, nuts, seeds, and “smaller portions” of lean meats while eschewing refined, processed foods. They even have an in-store “Healthy Eating Specialist” whose job is to work at an in-store kiosk/desk to be there to answer questions from customers about health and healthy eating as well as giving lectures on health and nutrition in the local community–all the while pushing the vegan lifestyle. All of this may sound pretty good to the average Whole Foods customer who tends to be more health-conscious than those people who shop at a traditional grocery store. But they are laying a trap for their customers who may not be as nutritionally savvy about what a healthy diet can actually look like. And it’s really a whole lot worse than we ever thought.

Last week when I blogged about the new vegan propaganda movie called Forks Over Knives coming in May, I received well over 100 comments mostly from vegans who wanted to defend their chosen nutritional plan although I didn’t really criticize it or the film in my post. But “Jill in Chicago” wanted to defend Whole Foods and their “Healthy Eating Specialist” position against being characterized as vegan-promoting. Here’s what she wrote:

The focus of Whole Foods’ Health Starts Here program is not to eat a vegan diet, but to eat whole, unprocessed foods. I am currently in the midst of a Health Starts Here 28-Day Health Challenge, and the Healthy Eating Specialist who is assisting the group does not discourage meat and dairy consumption. The idea is to eat less of them.

That’s all well and good and I certainly wish Jill the best as she pursues her own weight and health goals with whatever diet she is choosing to follow. To me it’s all about finding the plan that will work for you, following it exactly, and then continuing to do that for the rest of your life. But what about those people who don’t know which plan is right for them? Is there a way to get a customized nutrition plan that will help them determine what their diet should look like? Whole Foods seems to think so through their partnership with Eat Right America doing direct marketing with the customers of their stores encouraging them to take a survey to see how to eat optimally for your health. What Whole Foods customer wouldn’t be interested in something like that? One of my readers forwarded an e-mail she received from a friend of hers who wanted to pass along this “amazing offer” from Whole Foods giving away “FREE customized nutrition plans to get you started or keep you motivated on your health journey.”

Gee, how nice is that? All you gotta do is go to the “Eat Right America Challenge” web site, enter or obtain an access code, fill out a survey about your eating, exercise and lifestyle habits as well as you health and they’ll spit you out the perfect diet just for you, including a personalized 28-day nutrition and eating plan that they say “really is a great resource…to Whole Foods Market customers.” They encourage people who take this survey to come back in to visit Whole Foods after you receive your diet plan to consult with the “Health Starts Here” station to speak with the “Healthy Eating Specialist” about learning more about “your path to a healthier life.” Don’t you just love how syrupy sweet and innocent they make this all sound? It’s a lot more dastardly than these unsuspecting Whole Foods customers even know!

So what’s the real deal here? I wanted to find out and share this with you so your friends, family and co-workers don’t get suckered into thinking this is a legitimate way to know which diet is right for them (if you want to have a REAL test done to determine the correct nutritional makeup of your diet for you based on how your body metabolizes food and nutrients, then you might consider getting the FitTest done from GetYourHealthTested.com). Maybe what they conclude about the kind of diet you should be eating is right for you…maybe not. But this survey is not based on anything scientific methodology regarding your specific situation. It’s deliberately meant to mislead you into thinking what you are currently doing is causing harm to your health and that there is only one solution to preventing your health from getting worse than it is. As you can imagine, the basis for the questions asked in this survey heavily leans on conventional wisdom about the relationship of consuming animal-based fats and proteins to developing heart disease, obesity, cancer, diabetes and other chronic diseases and the supposed virtues of consuming plant-based foods as a way to obtain optimal health. Let’s take a look at what it was like for me to take this survey for myself plugging in information about my diet and lifestyle.

I began by visiting the Challenge web site where they welcomed and congratulated me for taking “the first step toward a healthier more nutritious lifestyle” through my own “Personal Nutrition Report”:

The survey started off by asking me some basic demographic information about who I am in a “detailed assessment designed to accurately predict your health future.” Eat Right America is described as “a cause, a passionate desire to enable America’s families to live a life of ‘true’ health.” They do this by promising the results of their survey will give you a “personally-designed, nutrition prescription, that can dramatically extend your life expectancy and lower your risk of life-threatening diseases.” Wow, sounds like they’ve found the Fountain Of Youth miracle cure-all for all of life’s health woes. We shall see. They then asked questions about the current state of my health and what my typical diet looks like:

Two things stood out to me about the diet portion of the survey–they put eggs in with white meat and there was no designation for “grass-fed” or “pastured” foods. So any red meat consumption listed on the survey could be grain-fed or grass-fed. It obviously didn’t matter to them whether you consumed higher-quality meats or not (an it’s only gonna get even worse in a moment, though). I made it through the 15-minute survey so I could receive my own “Nutrition Prescription customized for Jimmy Moore”–they made it just for me (yeah right!):

You get a form letter from Dr. Scott Stoll who is a member of the Whole Foods Medical Board who explains that the “solution we have created for you is easy to understand, simple and fun for you and your family to adopt, and represents a proven methodology that is guaranteed to deliver the results you desire.” WOW! What in the world could this miracle of all miracles be that will end my weight and health struggles forever? They then explain about what the “Nutrition Prescription” is all about discussing the implementation of the “Nutritarian Lifestyle” from vegan physician Dr. Joel Fuhrman juxtaposed with the typical Standard American Diet and why this new way to eat is allegedly better for you. They even show you a graph of what your current diet looks like compared with SAD:

I think it’s interesting they lump meat and dairy together in the same category and apparently list foods like bacon in the “Processed Foods” section. Do you think they put things like tofu and skim milk in with the “Processed Foods” when they are both OBVIOUSLY highly-processed? I wouldn’t bet the house on it. Continuing through my personal assessment, the news only got worse. I was chastised for consuming too much red meat, animal products, and full-fat dairy while eschewing whole grains and more vegetables. They point to my diet as the reason why my health is at great risk for disease:

For several pages, I receive a lecture on why my cholesterol is too high which puts me at risk for a heart attack (I’ve previously explained in this post that cholesterol testing is a lot more sophisticated these days than ever before and that measuring particle size is much more relevant than LDL or total cholesterol). They claim my LDL (explained as “the most accurate determinant of risk” of coronary artery disease) should be below 80 mg/dl to “maximize reversal” of heart disease, but there was nary a mention of HDL “good” cholesterol in the equation. Additionally, they use the body mass index (BMI) to determine the obesity of an individual stating that it “is a fairly reliable indicator of body fat for most people.” The say my BMI at 251 pounds on my 6’3″ body frame puts me at a “significantly increased risk of heart disease, diabetes, and cancer.” Oh, now isn’t that nice? They’ve got a rude awakening coming when none of this actually happens to me as they’re trying scaremonger these poor Whole Foods customers into thinking they have to eat a vegan diet. Oh yes, that sticky little detail is coming up soon. But first they need to continue to put the fear of God in me about my current health before they swoop in to the rescue with their miracle plan to save me:

They say I’m at a “very high risk” of sudden cardiac death if I don’t “take action immediately” despite the fact that my heart scan score in 2009 showed zero calcium buildup in my arteries. My risk of stroke is also “very high” because they think blood clots will happen because of my diet. And with a fasting blood glucose score of 83, they still put me at “significant risk” for getting diabetes because I’m not eating and exercising the way they think I should be. They weren’t finished yet piling on more warnings about what my current diet is doing to my risks for developing cancer and osteoporosis (this is actually starting to get funny if they weren’t so serious about it):

So I’m at “high risk” for developing cancer because of my eating and fitness choices and they will help me “identify those choices” that will be better for me. HA! Then with my bone health, it’s the same song and dance. What I’m doing right now ain’t good enough–but there’s something better that we think (hope and pray to God) you’ll like…or something like that. What exactly are the culprits in my devastatingly, hanging-by-a-thread health right now? Let’s take a look:

My full-fat dairy loving, caffeinated tea guzzling, saturated fat-laden meat eating, and salted food consumption is what they think is killing me. Gee, if these are all of the problems with my diet right now, then why am I in the best health of my entire life? Why do I feel so good if I’m just one bunless bacon cheeseburger away from saying so long to this world? And how did eating so “unhealthy” bring my weight down by triple digits, get me off of three prescription medications for good, and have me doing things I would have never thought possible just a few years back? I, of course, know better and have all the confidence in the world about my healthy low-carb lifestyle. But what about those people who take this survey and believe it’s the gospel truth? They read this and think, “Oh my God, what can I do to stop this devastation from happening to me?” Enter the Eat Right America eating plan:

They try to convince you this is a good thing by stating at the top of the page that this is all about “Nutrition Excellence & Health” and then proceed to explain what they mean by that. To become a “Nutritarian,” all you have to do is eat lots of fruits and vegetables, beans, nuts and seeds, cut down on your animal-based food consumption opting for “healthier options in this food group” (hmmm, lemme guess–ones that are lower in saturated fat?) and eat much less of foods that are “empty of nutrients or toxic” like refined sugars, white flour, processed foods and fast food. On the final point, I think we can agree, but Dr. Fuhrman is hung up on meat being such an unhealthy part of any diet plan. He sees meat in the same vein as low-carbers look at high-fructose corn syrup. It must be avoided as much as possible except for maybe the once-in-a-while “treat.” That’s nothing more than utter nonsense and ignorance. What exactly does the Nutritarian Food Pyramid look like? Check it out for yourself:

What a bassackwards food pyramid this is! Equating eggs and meat with processed foods and sweets is being intellectually dishonest. Sure, those non-starchy vegetables are an excellent addition to any diet (including a low-carb one), but why the damnation of foods that are equal in their nutrient density to veggies such as red meat, fish, eggs, oils, and the like? There’s no explanation for this other than the insinuation that consuming these foods that contain saturated fat will lead to serious health consequences down the road. But there is no evidence supporting such a claim. Even still, here comes the kicker–”My Personalized Eating Plan” according to the great purveyors of nutritional truth and wisdom at Whole Foods:

And THERE IT IS! All of this nonsense about how horrible my health is, what the dietary “cause” of my health decline is, what a good diet should look like and all the rest was nothing more than a setup for this moment. The diet they are recommending that I begin eating immediately to overturn the issues associated with my “poor” diet is one that is 96% plants, 3% meat and dairy, and 2% processed foods/snacks. REALLY?!

While technically this isn’t a vegan diet because there are very small amounts of meat allowed on this plan, it might as well be. Meat isn’t a condiment to me–it’s the lifeblood of a healthy low-carb lifestyle change that has given me vibrant health like nothing else I’ve ever done before. I don’t need to consume 96% of my calories from plant sources which includes high-carb whole grains, beans, fruits and all the rest. I’m doing just fine livin’ la vida low-carb. Can I tell you how much this angers me that they would try to pull something so incredibly deceiving to people who will likely buy into it hook, line and sinker? This is disgusting because there is no education about the wonderful nutrients contained in meats or the health consequences for some people who consume carbohydrate-rich foods. That to me is ethically wrong to deliberately withhold information from the consumer that could help them make the most informed decision about their health.

They require a 28-day pledge to doing the following: eating at least one large salad, at least a half-cup of beans/legumes, at least three fresh fruits, at least one ounce of raw nuts/seeds, and at least one large double-sized serving of steamed green vegetables on a daily basis while avoiding the “most harmful food habits” that include eating barbequed, processed meats or commercial red meat, fried foods, full-fat dairy like cheese and butter, soft drinks of all kinds both diet and sugary, and white flour. It sure sounds a whole lot like a vegan diet to me with all of those restrictions on what can be consumed on this diet. They also say to chunk any foods that contain over 200mg sodium per serving and to use a blender to liquify your vegetables to drink. Oh, but they help you come off of your “meat habit” (as Dr. Neal Barnard described it in my podcast interview with him last year) beginning in Day 8 of this 28-Day plan:

Isn’t it interesting how they took great pains to explain that this meal plan isn’t vegan, but then pushed the need to “reduce your intake of animal foods” from your diet? If meat is part of being a “Nutritarian” as they claim, then what’s this concept of “your desire for animal foods (will) diminish over time?” Meat is most certainly NOT a condiment in a healthy diet no matter what Dr. Fuhrman and his lackeys at Whole Foods wants you to believe. Meat is where the REAL nutrition is found and you’re depriving your body of some incredible health benefits by trying to eliminate it from your diet completely. Just ask Lierre Keith or Denise Minger.

By Day 15, they encourage you to “change the focus of your meal from meat to vegetables” and they assure you will get plenty of protein by consuming greens, beans, nuts and seeds. The gradual move to eating “less meat” is in full force by week three of the plan and it reaches the climax by the time you enter the final week of the 28-Day Challenge when “you are eating much less animal foods,” oils, milk/dairy products, sugar, coffee/tea and caffeine, and a whole lot more veggies, fruit, beans, nuts and seeds. Lest you think none of this survey really has anything at all to do with Whole Foods, then you would be sorely mistaken:

Yes, you too can become a “Nutritarian” nerd by hopping in your car and driving to your nearest Whole Fools…Whole Paycheck…er, I mean Whole Foods Market to pick up these books, CDs and DVDs to provide you more vegan-based propaganda to fool you into thinking this is the best option for your health. This partnership Whole Foods has made with the vegan diet is intentional and should ostracize any customer who chooses to eat an animal-based diet. That includes virtually every Paleo and low-carb dieter on the planet. If you ask me, a company that is THIS invested in promoting a dietary agenda like this doesn’t deserve the support of people who disagree with it. They’ve drawn a line in the sand and dug in their heels on trying to make this “Nutritarian” diet the ONLY way for Whole Foods customers to get healthy. We should vote with our dollars about what we think about this and send Whole Foods executives a clear message: YOU’RE NOT PUSHING A VEGAN AGENDA DOWN OUR THROATS!

With the announcement today that Japan may lose its struggle to resolve a worsening crisis at its stricken Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, concern is mounting over the increasing risk of an uncontrolled release of radioactive material. The Fukushima plant was hit by two explosions following the massive 9.0-magnitude earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan Friday.

Concern on Saturday led to a short-term run on iodine in Finland, but according to reports, supplies were replenished by Sunday. There were reports in Sweden that worried consumers were inquiring about iodine supplements but no increased sales were noted.

The west coast of the United States may be feel the effects of any meltdown and release of radiation in Japan. Agence-France Presse reports that California is closely monitoring the efforts to contain leaks and that experts have suggested that any radioactive cloud would likely be blown out across the Pacific toward the west coast of the U.S.

While there is currently no threat to the U.S., the question arises as to whether residents should supplement with iodine as a precaution.

Iodine is required by the thyroid to produce hormones which regulate all major metabolic functions. In addition to thyroid hormone, iodine is also required for production of other hormones and supports a healthy immune system. It is not produced by the body and must be derived from dietary sources or supplements.

Radioactive iodine may be released into the environment as a result of a nuclear meltdown. Individuals who are iodine deficient are at an increased risk of developing radiation-induced thyroid cancer because their thyroid will accumulate more of the radioactive version of the chemical element.

High doses of potassium iodide (50-100mg for adults) administered within 48 hours before or eight hours after radiation exposure can significantly reduce the thyroid’s accumulation of radioactive iodine and decrease the risk of thyroid cancer.

Those who are not iodine deficient will fare better in the event of an exposure. Normally your body contains approximately 20 to 30 mg of iodine mostly stored in your thyroid gland. Signs of iodine deficiency include goiter and hypothyroidism (which leads to weight gain and fatigue among other symptoms).

However, it is possible to overdose on iodine supplements and amounts exceeding one gram may cause burning in the mouth, throat and stomach, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, weak pulse, and even coma.

On the other hand, it would be very difficult to take in too much dietary iodine. Most Americans get their iodine from iodized table salt. Iodine occurs naturally sea vegetables such as seaweed, kelp and kombu which are excellent sources, as are shellfish and saltwater fish. Other very good sources include yogurt, cow’s milk, eggs, poultry, mozzarella cheese and strawberries. These are all good choices to support your thyroid health.
