<p align="center"><strong>FDA CONCEDES RAW MILK ACROSS STATE LINES OK FOR PERSONAL CONSUMPTION</strong></p>
<p align="center"><strong>But continues to broadcast misinformation about unpasteurized dairy</strong></p>
<p><strong>Washington, DC ( November 17, 2011)</strong>—In a statement issued on November 1, concurrent with a raw milk freedom rally held outside FDA headquarters in Silver Spring, Maryland, the agency conceded that it “has never taken, nor does it intend to take, enforcement action against an individual who purchased and transported raw milk across state lines solely for his or her own pe<img class=" wp-image-8339 alignright" title="milk0313" src="http://liberationwellness.files.wordpress.com/2012/05/milk0313.jpg?w=310&h=202" alt="" width="310" height="202" />rsonal consumption” [<a href="http://www.westonaprice.org/HARTKE%20COMMUNICATIONS/Wapf/Press%20Releases/www.fda.gov/Food/FoodSafety/Product-SpecificInformation/MilkSafety/ucm277854.htm" target="_blank">www.fda.gov/Food/FoodSafety/Product-SpecificInformation/MilkSafety/ucm277854.htm</a>].  This statement reverses FDA’s prior position in which the agency reserved the option of taking action against individual consumers crossing state lines with raw milk. Federal regulation 21 CFR § 1240.61 prohibits the introduction of raw milk for human consumption into interstate commerce.</p>
<p>A caravan of moms brought raw milk across state lines on November 1 and served it to rally participants in front of FDA headquarters.</p>
<p>“Unfortunately, FDA’s announcement allowing individuals to transport raw milk across state lines is filled with the same misinformation that the agency has spread in the past,” says Sally Fallon Morell, president of the Weston A. Price Foundation, an organization that sponsors A Campaign for Real Milk, aimed at universal access to clean raw milk. “FDA continues to insist that raw milk is dangerous, when even the agency’s own exaggerated list of outbreaks shows that raw milk is safer than other foods.”</p>
<p>“FDA lists outbreaks associated with raw cheese, produced in less than sanitary conditions, as ‘outbreaks caused by raw milk,’ thereby inflating the number of illnesses associated with raw milk,” says Fallon Morell. “The actual number of illnesses associated (but not necessarily proved) with raw milk is about forty-two per year, which makes raw milk a very safe food given the large number of raw milk consumers.  No deaths have been associated with raw milk during the past twelve years, but three people have died from tainted pasteurized milk.”</p>
<p>FDA insists that raw milk drinkers constitute less than 1 percent of the population. Yet a 2007 government survey found that about 3 percent of the population consumes raw milk, or about nine million people.  This number is likely to be higher today as raw milk consumption is growing rapidly. Even in the state of Maryland, where raw milk sales are illegal, over 3 percent of respondents stated that they drank raw milk.  “This milk is coming from Pennsylvania, where raw milk sales are legal,” says Pete Kennedy, president of the Farm-to-Consumer Legal Defense Fund, “to the great detriment of Maryland farmers.”  According to Kennedy, hundreds of thousands of dollars of farm sales each year flow from Maryland to Pennsylvania.</p>
<p>The Farm-to-Consumer Legal Defense Fund is currently representing citizens challenging the interstate ban on raw milk in an Iowa federal district court .</p>
<p>According to Fallon Morell, “FDA continues to insist that no science exists to substantiate the nutritional and health benefits of raw milk, yet we now have five European studies, published in peer reviewed journals, showing that raw milk provides powerful protection against asthma and allergies. And there is copious scientific research showing that pasteurization of milk denatures and diminishes the effectiveness of enzymes and vitamins in the milk.”</p>
<p>Moreover, raw milk is designed to build the immune system—the components that do this are denatured by the heat process of pasteurization.  FDA claims that the elderly, the immune-compromised, children and pregnant women especially should avoid raw milk. “These are the very people who need it the most,” says Fallon Morell.</p>

The bill got voted out of committee in the Assembly today.</p>
<p>The Agriculture and Natural Resources committee of the NJ State Assembly heard powerful supporting and opposing testimony for the NJ Raw Milk Bill and voted unanimously to pass the bill out of committee.</p>

Opposing testimony today came from the American Academy of Pediatrics, the regional milk conglomerate, Cornell University Extension staff, a dairy testing lab, health officers, and many others.  These groups can apply strong pressure to our legislators, so it&#8217;s important we continue to make our voices heard.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://i574.photobucket.com/albums/ss187/livinlowcarbman/fastingforweightloss.jpg?t=1298494053" align="left">  Just say the word &#8220;fasting&#8221; to most people and you&#8217;ll conjure up one of two immediate thoughts&#8211;a Christian would think about sacrificing food for a period of time in an effort to devote time in intercessory prayer to God over a matter of serious concern for your family or a friend; a health enthusiast might ponder fasting as a means for bringing about improvements in a specific disease or ailment.  Of course, there is a third reaction that I think the vast majority of us would think about upon hearing the word &#8220;fasting&#8221;: torturous STARVATION that is the last thing you&#8217;d ever want to do!  Can I get a witness?  Wherever you fall along this spectrum of responses to the concept of fasting, there&#8217;s no denying that there are a whole lot of people who believe strongly in the power it possesses in the life of the person who decides to do it for whatever their reasons.</p>
<p>Although I am a committed believer in Jesus Christ and have been exposed to this concept of fasting for most of my life, I&#8217;ve never personally understood how someone could do it.  Growing up I could hardly go three hours without putting something in my mouth&#8211;something I now know was intricately tied to my severe addiction to sugar and other culprit carbohydrates that kept me constantly hungry and craving more carbs!  But when I <a href="http://www.thelivinlowcarbshow.com/shownotes/1095/trying-out-dr-mike-eades’-intermittent-fasting-concept-episode-67/" />attempted intermittent fasting in 2006</a>, it merely ended in <a href="http://livinlavidalowcarb.com/blog/terminating-the-intermittent-fast-at-last/1219">miserable futility</a>.  Anytime someone brought up the &#8220;fasting&#8221; word again, all I could think about was the pain and anguish I felt doing that intermittent fasting nearly five years ago.</p>
<p>But in 2011, I decided after prodding from people like <a href="http://robbwolf.com/" />Robb Wolf</a> and other intermittent fasting advocates that I&#8217;d give it another go.  Allowing myself upwards of 18-20 hours between meals has been the way I&#8217;ve tried to eat most of the time this year which has been working MUCH better for me this time around than before.  In reality, it&#8217;s been quite easy eating a meal in the morning around 9:00am and then another around 2:00pm as the totality of my food intake for the day.  I&#8217;ve even sometimes mixed it up and pushed my first meal to around 12:00pm and then the second meal at 5:30pm.  It&#8217;s all still intermittent fasting that has helped me shed close to 30 pounds in the first couple of months of doing this.  I couldn&#8217;t be more pleased!  But what about this idea of an extended period of fasting in an effort to boost my health?</p>
<p>When I <a href="http://www.thelivinlowcarbshow.com/shownotes/1172/dr-thomas-seyfried-on-killer-carbs-ketosis-as-a-cancer-cure-episode-302/" />interviewed Dr. Thomas Seyfried on my podcast in November 2009</a>, he suggested people who want to prevent cancer should eat a calorie-restricted low-carb diet and considering doing at least one week-long fast annually.  Of course, most people couldn&#8217;t (or more likely WOULDN&#8217;T!) do something like this for all the reasons I&#8217;ve already stated.  But what would it be like to try it?  Now that intermittent fasting seems to come more naturally to me probably because of the blood sugar control <a href="http://livinlavidalowcarb.com/blog/my-2011-pursuit-of-230-challenge-update-with-peculiar-blood-sugar-testing-results/9921">my current routine is providing me</a>, perhaps I could give a total fasting from food for one week a try for myself to see how my body would respond.  One of my readers recently did not just one, not just two, but THREE one-week fasts over the past year on the suggestion of his doctor regarding some prostate issues he was dealing with.  He had strict guidelines to follow during the fast and noted that <i>&#8220;after the first 72 hours it really is not that bad at all. You don’t really feel weak or anything like that.&#8221;</i></p>
<p>He told me he wanted to share &#8220;something profound&#8221; that he learned about himself through this fasting experience.</p>
<blockquote><p>The way you experience yourself physically when you are fasting is practically identical to the way you experience yourself physically when you are eating. There is not much difference. The reason this is so important is that when you think you experience hunger while eating normally, that same experience of hunger is present when you are fasting.</p>
<p>I believe this is why people have so much trouble losing weight.</p>
<p>In other words the hunger sensations in fasting are the same as while eating normally. You then ask yourself how you can be hungry when you have eaten 3 hours ago when it is the same hunger sensations when you have not eaten in a week?  Calling them hunger sensations is also not really the right word. They are more empty stomach sensations.</p>
<p>So, what we think is hunger is not really hunger when you eat normally and the impulse to eat no matter how much it makes you think you want to eat cannot be taken seriously.</p></blockquote>
<p>WOW!  Now that&#8217;s quite a lesson my reader learned from his fasting experience.  If we can learn to view hunger in the right way, then we can be more resistant to the temptations that tend to inevitably befall so many of us who struggle with our weight.  As my reader so succinctly put it, <i>&#8220;fasting allows you to reclaim your hunger for what it is and it no longer dictates what you put in your mouth.&#8221;</i>  Now that&#8217;s a message I think we can all learn something from.  Oh, and by the way, the series of one-week fasts was &#8220;tremendously successful&#8221; in treating those prostate issues he had, too.  WOO HOO!</p>
<p>I don&#8217;t know when I&#8217;m going to try to go an entire week without any food at all, but I definitely want to give it a go.  Of course, if I do that then I don&#8217;t think I&#8217;ll be doing my normal exercise that week.  And I want to make sure I won&#8217;t need to record any podcasts or other activities where I&#8217;ll need to keep my mind and body fueled.  So it looks like it might be in April or May before that happens.  Anybody else willing to try their own one-week fast for the sake of your health?  Lemme know if you do and what it was like for you.</p>

<p><strong>Ok now here are some of my thoughts</strong>:</p>
<p>Think about how isolated most people are . . .<br />
 <br />
They drive by themselves to an office . . .</p>
<p>A large part of communication is by email or texting . . .</p>
<p>Most people dont sit down to dinner with family. . .</p>
<p>Extended family is a thing of the past.<br />
On a brighter note . . .</p>
<p>What can you do to encourage, affirm and lift up other people? <br />
When you do these things, you not only become magnetic, but you truly change lives!<br />
When you see more in others than they see in themselves (and tell them), those people will become like a flower that has water and sun . . . they are going to blossom!</p>
<p>Find something positive about the people you are around.</p>
<p>We all have &#8216;learning&#8217; experiences . . .<br />
sometimes known as failures . . . remind others that it is just that . . . an experience that can help them grow into the person they are meant to be.</p>
<p>Help people visualize their success and believe that they can WIN.</p>
<p>Every day when I pick the kids up from school, we have 5 questions . . . the last two are the most important:</p>
<p>1.  What did you liek best about your day?<br />
2.  Did you have any challenges today?<br />
3.  What are you looking forward to tomorrow?<br />
4.  Who did you help today?<br />
5.  Who did you encourage?</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://i574.photobucket.com/albums/ss187/livinlowcarbman/IMG_0010-1.jpg?t=1281985529" align="left">  According to the latest statistics from the <a href="http://www.alz.org/alzheimers_disease_facts_figures.asp">Alzheimer&#8217;s Association</a>, a total of 5.3 million people are currently afflicted with Alzheimer&#8217;s disease at an annual cost of $172 billion in medical-related expenses.  It is the 7th leading cause of death in 2010 and mortality rates have risen a whopping 46.1 percent from 2000-2006 (meanwhile death rates from stroke, prostate cancer, breast cancer, heart disease, and HIV have all DROPPED during that same period).  With the baby boomer generation coming of age, the incidence of Alzheimer&#8217;s has unfortunately become more and more prevalent with the rates expected to nearly triple by the year 2050.  For those 5 million plus people with Alzheimer&#8217;s disease, think about the countless tens of millions more family members who are forced to watch their loved ones deteriorate right before their eyes so that they no longer even resemble who they were before being afflicted with this terrible condition.  Even worse is the realization that this family member you built such great memories with over the years now doesn&#8217;t even know who you are anymore.  This has got to be one of the saddest ways to live out your final days on Earth after living so many years of your life cognizant of everything going on around you.  And yet this is the reality that directly impacts so many families worldwide who are left to pick up the pieces when they&#8217;re told it&#8217;s Alzheimer&#8217;s disease.</p>
<p>Unfortunately, medical treatment options for Alzheimer&#8217;s patients is limited almost exclusively to pharmaceutical therapies.  When a loved one is diagnosed with having Alzheimer&#8217;s disease, the medical profession tends to offer up a prescription drug and informs the family to prepare a will while the loved one still has their mental faculties and they are urged to begin making arrangements to place the Alzheimer&#8217;s-stricken family member in a nursing home.  This is a ritual that has become much too commonplace with the steady rise in Alzheimer&#8217;s in recent years and it&#8217;s not going to get better anytime soon.  It&#8217;s as if physicians have just thrown up their hands in defeat and given up on people who have Alzheimer&#8217;s disease thinking there is nothing more that can be done for them beyond medication (and, sadly, we&#8217;ve seen this play out with other diseases as well).  But what if you could actually heal Alzheimer&#8217;s disease through some simple changes in diet and supplementation?  Is it REALLY possible to transform the life of someone with Alzheimer&#8217;s by making some nutritional alterations that none of these medical experts are talking about?  That&#8217;s exactly what a woman from Bedford, Indiana named <a href="http://www.nitascoggan.com/" />Nita Scoggan</a> wanted to find out.</p>
<p><img src="http://i574.photobucket.com/albums/ss187/livinlowcarbman/IMG_0004.jpg?t=1281996171" align="right">  After she and her husband Bill enjoyed a fantastic life together working for the federal government at both the Pentagon and the White House in Washington, DC during the Reagan, Bush, and Clinton eras, they retired back to Bill&#8217;s birthplace in Indiana to enjoy the twilight of their lives together near family and friends.  They had great hopes of traveling around the world and doing the things they&#8217;ve always wanted to do.  But in 1999, Nita noticed that Bill began exhibiting behaviors that had her very concerned about the condition of his brain health.  Forgetfulness was becoming the norm and he even seemed like he was in a fog most of the time.  She scheduled an appointment to see a series of doctors who all confirmed her worst fears&#8211;Bill was quickly approaching an advanced stage of Alzheimer&#8217;s disease.  After getting past the initial shock and devastation of this grim news, Nita was told to prepare Bill to live with this for the rest of his life.  However, she refused to think the man she loved would be in a virtual vegetative state for his remaining days and so she implored the savvy research analyst skills she honed while working at the Pentagon to begin reading all studies that she could get her hands on about nutrition and supplements as it relates to Alzheimer&#8217;s disease.  What she discovered and had never heard about before absolutely astounded her!</p>
<p>Grains and other sugary/starchy carbohydrates were making Bill&#8217;s brain run sluggish and so she had to immediately cut down on his consumption of these brain-draning foods.  Additionally, when she came across a little-known supplement called <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phosphatidylserine">Phosphatidylserine</a>, the changes she began noticing in Bill when he took high doses of it were dramatic&#8211;the impact of his Alzheimer&#8217;s disease reversed and he began getting BETTER.  The amazing transformation back to the Bill she knew and loved for so many years didn&#8217;t happen overnight, but within two years the negative effects of his Alzheimer&#8217;s disease was no longer apparent.  He had been healed thanks to the changes in his nutrition and vitamins that Nita had implemented.  It was this protocol that became the basis for the <a href="http://www.nitascoggan.com/OnlineStore.aspx">books and resources</a> she now offers people who are interested in trying this method on their own family members with Alzheimer&#8217;s disease.  </p>

When I heard back from her, Nita said she thought it would be a lot more convincing for me to come visit her and Bill in person to capture them on video.  Since I already do regular <a href="http://www.youtube.com/livinlowcarbman">YouTube videos</a>, I thought that was a great idea.  When I asked where they lived she responded, &#8220;Oh, it&#8217;s a little small town in Indiana you&#8217;ve probably never heard of called Bedford.&#8221;  Well, as fate would have it, I had heard of it because my wife Christine&#8217;s family lives in this exact same town!  While we were on vacation there last week for our annual family reunion, I drove just 1.6 miles from Christine&#8217;s grandparents&#8217; house to meet up with this delightful couple who welcomed me into their home with open arms enthusiastically ready to share their miraculous story of love, determination, and a pursuit of the truth about Alzheimer&#8217;s disease.  </p>
<p>This truly is a breathtaking tale of triumph for healthy low-carb living and in finding natural ways to combat the diseases that plague modern society.  When conventional medicine chooses to give up on patients they think have no hope for recovery from something like Alzheimer&#8217;s disease, it&#8217;s time for people like Nita Scoggan to step in and shout it from the rooftops the truth that she has discovered and witnessed happen for people like her husband Bill.  Sure, some will dismiss this as just one anecdotal story and that it doesn&#8217;t prove anything scientifically.  But it&#8217;s difficult to argue with the results she and others are seeing using fresh real whole foods and dietary supplementation.  </p>

<p>Before I left, I gave Bill and Nita an autographed copy of my latest book <a href="http://tinyurl.com/yh6smyy"><i>21 Life Lessons From Livin&#8217; La Vida Low-Carb</i></a> because I included a chapter in there about neurological diseases like Alzheimer&#8217;s and how a very high-fat, low-carb ketogenic diet is showing great promise in the research as a treatment option for <a href="http://www.thelivinlowcarbshow.com/shownotes/432/dr-larry-mccleary-ep-229/" />what neurologist Dr. Larry McCleary calls &#8220;Type 3 diabetes.&#8221;</a>  And, of course, I had to share the incredible results that <a href="http://www.thelivinlowcarbshow.com/shownotes/wp-content/uploads/llvlc240-dr-mary-newport.mp3">Dr. Mary Newport</a> and her husband Steve have seen with his Alzheimer&#8217;s diagnosis by simply adding in <a href="http://coconutketones.com/" />coconut oil and MCT oil</a> to his diet (read the <a href="http://www.coconutketones.com/whatifcure.pdf">case study she published in July 2008</a>).  This is an exciting trend happening in Alzheimer&#8217;s treatment since traditional methods are showing little to no progress in patients with this disease.  I&#8217;m grateful to have had the opportunity to witness with my own eyes how well Bill interacts today (and he is much more lucid than most people in their upper 80s are!).  You would never know that man has had Alzheimer&#8217;s disease&#8211;and thanks to the tenacious investigative work of his wife Nita, he never will again!</p>

<p>I had been contemplating composing nearly the same article myself, but came upon <a href="http://www.ftcldf.org/life-without-risk-bemis.htm">this piece</a> from Steve Bemis, attorney with the <a href="http://www.ftcldf.org">Farm to Consumer Legal Defense Fund</a> this morning. In it, Steve points out the comparative risks in life and begs the question be answered, do we regulate every facet of life, label every activity,event,place, food, product, etc., just because there is the <em>potential </em>for harm? Life comes with risks, folks, and it is time we accept it!<br />
