Real milk on NPR

On the Morning Edition July 19, 2010,  NPR covered the increasing popularity of fresh milk.

It was an honor to sit down with April Fulton and discuss with her all my reasons for choosing fresh milk.

I think she did a fantastic job piecing together all the information she collected to give a balanced explanation on why some consumers choose fresh milk.  I was thrilled to hear that a former FDA person actually admitted that pasteurization does destroy some nutrients.  At the end of the program, the narrator says “The food safety expert says not getting sick is what’s important.

He would never drink raw milk. But he thinks banning it only encourages Liz Reitzig and others to skirt the law, and that could put them at greater risk.

If you’re one of the one to 3 percent of the population that drinks raw milk, Acheson says make sure that the cows are clean, your hands are clean, and the bottle are sterilized and stored properly.”

This is the most flexibility I have ever heard from a government person on raw milk.  Kudos to NPR for covering this important topic and doing such a great job on it!

Do Supplements Really Make a Difference in Dental Health?

As a dentist, patients often solicit my advice regarding the use of oral nutritional supplements. A common question is:  Are they effective?  The answer:  it depends.  If you are deficient in a particular mineral or vitamin, then most definitely.

Of course, this begs the next question: How do you know if you are deficient?

Any competent physician or nutritionist can be of assistance here. Apart from symptoms produced by certain deficiencies that are often observable clinically, a simple urinalysis or blood test can be used to identify which specific vitamins or minerals are lacking. It sometimes surprises people to learn that vitamins are essential elements to good health. In fact, by definition, their absence will produce a disease.

For example:

• Lack of vitamin C produces: scurvy (fatigue, nausea, bleeding gums and loose teeth)
• Lack of vitamin D produces: rickets (bowed legs and arms from a failure to mineralize bone)
• Lack of vitamin A produces: night blindness

There are many forms of B vitamins. Here are a few of the diseases produced by their deficiency:

• Lack of vitamin B1: beriberi (can have several forms causing either cardiovascular or nervous system difficulties)
• Lack of vitamin B2: ariboflavinosis (symptoms include cracking of the lips and corners of the mouth)
• Lack of vitamin B3: pellagra (symptoms include the “four Ds”: diarrhea, dermatitis, dementia, and death).

And the list goes on. The same holds true for certain mineral deficiencies. Most people know that a lack of iron will produce anemia. While it is true that some deficiencies are more difficult to acquire than others, the fact remains that if you are excessively low in a given substance, the consequences generally follow.

One reason that blood tests are not always a reliable indicator of deficiency, however, has to do with the fact that the blood attempts to maintain a balance of all those things it needs (a corrective mechanism called “homeostasis”), regardless of deficiency. Thus, unless seriously out of balance, vitamin and mineral levels in blood can come back “normal” (because they can be found in the blood), though they are low elsewhere. In other words, the blood took them first so that it could maintain normal levels.

So, how do you know what to take? One of the most reliable ways is to be tested. Then, you can determine what you need and what the most optimal levels are for you.

In the absence of reliable testing, it is generally best to obtain your vitamins and minerals from natural sources.

This means getting it from your food or through the use of “whole food” vitamins. Not all synthetic vitamins are well absorbed and so will produce variable benefits. Sometimes, they can actually create deficiencies, because your body has to convert these “vitamins” to a more useable form. In the process, it takes nutrients from other sources in order to facilitate the process.

For that matter, improper or inefficient digestion can also make it difficult to extract the needed nutrients from your foods or vitamins. In this respect, some individuals also need to take digestive enzymes to facilitate the breakdown of proteins, fats and carbohydrates.

In my experience, several companies that produce high-quality whole food vitamins, minerals and herbal extracts are, Standard Process®, NutriWest®, and Simplexity Health™ Dr. Royal Lee, a dentist who founded Standard Process® actually developed the process for creating whole food concentrates. He stated many times that it was not possible for a synthetic vitamin to create the same result as a whole food concentrate complex of vitamins. In other words, synthetic vitamins can alter function, but they cannot support function. He stated that “the natural vitamin complexes contain the various closely related principles that are normally found together in foods.

The more we study those complexes, the more complex they appear.  That is why synthetic and chemically purified ‘vitamins’ are really not vitamins at all.  They are only fragments of vitamins.”  Dr. Lee then goes on to explain that “Vitamin deficiencies are now becoming recognized as specialized forms of starvation.  Even overweight persons getting their full quota of calories, carbohydrates, fats and proteins, are very often starving to the danger point of disease from vitamin deficiencies.”

Your body was designed to assimilate nutrients, known and possibly as yet unknown,  from whole foods. So this is the first method of balancing body chemistry.  After this has been accomplished, any remaining imbalances can be addressed with whole food supplements such as those listed above.  Your body has to have whole nutrients to maintain a healthy balance and function.  Lack of balance leads to disease.  So, yes, taking supplements (the right kind and in the proper amounts) can make a difference in both dental — and overall — health.

Cops Raid Raw Food Club, Guns Drawn

Bizarre is all I can say. After the Wisconsin DATCP raided the Vernon Hershberger Farm, authorities gathered the “evidence” they needed and moved on to California where they raided the private (as in, “not public”) Rawesome Food Club.

Were they looking for illegal drugs? Illegal immigrants? Illegal money laundering? No folks, I kid you not; the “authorities” came in, guns drawn, looking for (drum roll please…) Raw Milk!

How silly they look, searching carefully under tables and boxes of vegetables, guns in hand just in case some radical foodie might jump them. What would one of these scary individuals do to them anyway? Give them a (raw) milk bath?!

Ah, please Big Brother; you have grown too big for your britches. Why don’t you go after the really bad guys and let us have our food? Can you not see how ridiculous this is, and how positively hilarious you look? Sheesh.

Wait, it’s “Genetics”?!

I’ve heard it all; because several family members have had their gall bladders removed, the only reasonable conclusion is that it is”genetics”. I am not wanting to poke fun at anyone, but do we really need to place the blame for every ill on our genes? Really?!

Folks, genetics have been blamed for every ill under the sun: cancer, diabetes, heart disease, birth defects, excema, schizophrenia, obesity, breast cancer, etc.; along with a few “disorders’ such as laziness, obsessive compulsiveness, depression, shyness… You get the picture.

Well I’m not buyin’ it folks; I’m just not. After all, most of these diseases and disorders are particular to modern man, and certainly the rest occurred  infrequently at best in people who suffered from malnutrition, war, and lack of decent living conditions, or indulged to excess.

But, “No!”, you say. “My mother was diabetic, my grandmother diabetic, and I am also diabetic; therefore it must be genetic”. More importantly, “My doctor says it is genetic!”  Well, let’s bow down to the doctor/god who proclaims such truth!

Folks, we live in a processed world. Likely you are eating a similar diet as an adult to what you were fed as a child. This means your mother ate the same types of foods as you ate (and, scary though it seems, your children now do as well). Mom learned to cook from her mother, although Grandma likely ate far better as a girl than she did later in life, which is why she only developed diabetes as an old woman, not at 30, or 20, or… as people do now.

Our great grandparents ate mostly simple, local, whole foods. They had gardens, farms, or neighbors who were farmers. Their diets consisted of fresh, whole (unprocessed) milk, eggs, meat, fresh fruits & vegetables, and whole grains. They used lard and butter for cooking and baking, not crisco and vegetable oil. Fermented foods such as sauerkraut or pickles were part of the daily diet. Processed foods only began to make strong appearances on the local grocer’s shelves around the turn of the 20th century. Even still it was eggs, meat, and butter that were in demand. Now consider this: they and their parents died of old age, not degenerative disease!

I recall well my grandmother’s cooking; she was famous in our little Mid-Western town for her culinary skill. But she was feeding us on all kinds of new-fangled foods like sugar (and artificial color/flavor) laden Jello, casseroles made from canned vegetable and Campbells soup, and Tater Tots. Her pie crusts were dutifully made with Crisco, the fillings filled with canned fruit. Not good; Grandma died at 63.

My own mother fed us hamburger helper, Kraft Macaroni and Cheese, turkey burgers (ultimate bluck!) and powdered skimmed milk. She has asthma, allergies, and developed other problems in spite of switching to “healthy” (low-fat) foods when I was a teen. I now tell people that it is important we get our nutrients from real food, not nutritional supplements: Mom popped multitude pills everyday, but even still refuses to eat butter or drink much whole, unprocessed milk (thankfully, she does consume some raw milk). She is proud of her 2 eggs a day, but suffers from severe short term memory loss and has had most of her major joints replaced. (Sorry Mom, but your story is just such a good example :-P )

You must understand: we were not created to require knee replacements and back surgery. Nor were our bodies designed for behavior and learning disorders, degenerative diseases, depression, cancer. Our vision is supposed to hold out pretty well until we’re elderly, as is every other part of our body. And we were supposed to be able to eat all good things, not suffer from Celiac Disease and Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Then, when our time has come, we were designed to die of old age-what a concept!

There is now a new field of study called Epigenetics. This particular field explores how genes can be turned on and  off to display differing characteristics dependent upon environmental, nutrient and other factors. It is a fascinating study!

The research of Dr. Weston A Price and others, seems to corroborate  these findings. Dr. Price found that food played an absolutely integral role in the development of the human body and mind. Replacing nutrient-dense, traditional foods with the “foods of modern commerce”  caused birth defects and many physical weaknesses, along with degenerative diseases and mental/emotional disorders in the people he studied. Today’s foods are far worse than those of Price’s day, and we are also much further down the road of malnourishment, due to the displacement of nutrients in our modern, processed “foods”. The work of Dr. Francis Pottenger, as well as the information coming from the study of epigenetics clearly show that the effects of a poor diet can, in fact, be passed down for several generations. But it also shows that as individuals we can affect  change upon we, and our children’s, genes for generations to come.

So is it genetics, really? Well, in one sense I would say, “yes”. But to a much larger degree I must conclude that we hold within our hands, more specifically the tips of our forks, the power to change our very lives and the lives of future generations. It all begins with what we choose to put in our mouths, and the mouths of our families. Choose well.

Organic Produce? . . . Local Produce? . . . Does It Matter?

Are Organics Worth Their Price?

That would depend . . .

The recession is lingering. . . . and for city dwellers in areas where agriculture is not big, this question can be important for a family’s budget.

While many families have sought out food co-ops and local farmers who aren’t certified organic but certainly are (they don’t use synthetic
pesticides, petroleum-based fertilizers, or sewer sludge), the chickens run free on grass, other families are making the hard choice on whether to spend their money on organic produce.

IS ORGANIC really important?

I recently came across an article in O Magazine — by author Nina Planck did a great job sharing her insights and research.

Our family is a ‘city’ family with a Whole Foods nearby a small market that provides local produce, meats, and dairy, and then
the BIG Super Market — Publix who has its allotted 6 feet of Organic produce 2 feet in the Meat section and so on.

To summarize Nina’s article, there were a whole bunch of European studies.  The bottom line is that we now know that organic produce that is free of synthetic nitrogen fertilizer has:

1.  A stronger immune system.  The nitrogen produces a watery,
sugary cell sap that compromises the plant’s health (imagine that).*
A healthy plant, makes a healthier meal, and tastier.

2.  Higher levels of beneficial antioxidants, including vitamin C
which helps prevent aging)

3.  More polyunsaturated fatty acids (according to the French)

4.  More nutrients according a 5-year study by 33 universities in
the United Kingdom

Maybe this will help you and your family — it’s what the guidelines we use:

These are the fruits and vegetables known to be MOST CONTAMINATED with  herbicides and pesticides

1.  Peaches
2.  Apples
3.  Bell Peppers
4.  Celery
5.  Nectarines
6.  Strawberries
7.  Cherries
8.  Lettuce
9.  Grapes
10. Pears
11. Spinach
12. Potatoes
13. Raspberries
14. Blueberries
15. Kale

My first weekly stop is our local market for any produce, meat, and dairy need.  Note that I pretty much put ALL berries on the buy LOCAL or ORGANIC list.  IF there is anything on my list that they didn’t have that our family really wants, we’ll go on to Whole Foods.  Then for our paper goods and household staples, it’s either the warehouse store or Publix.

Whole Foods brings in a lot of foods from South America — I never buy anything from South America even if it says ‘organic’ from South America because frankly I just don’t believe they monitor the farming practices – but this is just me.

Here’s the list of produce that is LEAST contaminated with herbicides and pesticides

1.  Sweet Corn
2.  Avocados
3.  Pineapples
4.  Cauliflower
5.  Sweet Peas
6.  Broccoli
7.  Onions
8.  Asparagus
9.  Bananas
10. Kiwi
11. Mangoes
12. Papaya
13. Eggplant
14. Cabbage
15. Watermelon
16. Tomato
17. Sweet Potato

Going Organic for many families is a lifestyle change — becoming healthier in all areas.  That’s how it was for us.  We are about 70% organic in our food — it’s all the kids knew until they went to school — and then they got introduced to world of their friends lunch boxes.  As for our cleaning, we are close to 95% green.  Of course, there is always room for improvement!

Why are farmers going organic?  One, the demand is huge.  Two, the money.  For some farmers it’s about raising healthier plants and raising soil fertility — which of course gives better plants!  Let’s hope more farmers choose to go down the organic path — more farmers means more choices and hopefully lower prices for us!
*There was a mention in Planck’s article that when a plant becomes dependent upon synthetic pesticides, it can no longer fend of pests naturally.  Kinda like when people become dependent on pharmaceuticals . . .

Preventing Eating Disorders in Teenage Girls

The focus in America on obesity has got about half of all normal weight teens in a panic over their weight and who can blame them? No matter where they go, they see images of extremely thin bikini clad women smothered on magazine covers with articles about how to get rid of your thighs, abs and gluts in less than 30 days.  Add that to living with a perpetual dieter, watching movies where the hot guy always goes for the thin girl and innocent comments by their physicians many teens end up starving themselves to fit in to the insane thin mold we idolize in this country.

Yes, obesity is a problem, but eating disorders are becoming a growing side effect of our focus on fat. Girls as young as five years old are starting to talk about their weight and the need to diet. My seven year, after a slumber party, asked, “Mom, am I skinny?” At the party, the girls took a shower and they compared their bodies. Not a single one of these seven to eight year old girls were overweight, but they all decided that my daughter was the thinnest and therefore the luckiest. It broke my heart.

We need to step up and start giving these girls a healthy and balanced message because there is more to life than weight. Here are a few tips for parents of teens that I have gathered from working with anorexic girls:

  • Stop dieting and don’t let your daughter diet. We have been dieting in this country for over forty years and we are fatter than ever. Diets don’t work. You must make permanent lifestyle changes such as switching to real food instead of processed food, but you need to eliminate the word ‘diet’ from your vocabulary. Focus on the health benefits of food, not the weight loss. For example, ‘we eat butter because it helps us absorb vitamins, minerals and antioxidants,’ or ‘we don’t eat artificially sweetened foods and beverages because they are toxic to our bodies.’ Make it about health, not weight.
  • Hide your scale. The last thing a teenage girl needs is a scale to confirm her worst nightmare. Do not let them see you weigh yourself, either.
  • Speak to your doctor. Make it very clear to your physician that he/she is not to say anything about your daughter’s weight in front of her. Also, do not allow the doctor to weigh you and your daughter at the same time. I know girls who ended up with anorexia just because of some innocent comment made by a doctor. Many dietitians get into the business because they have an eating disorder and some doctors also suffer from eating disorders or weight fetishes. Your daughter does not need to be burdened with their problems.
  • Affirm your daughter. Especially, dads. Make sure you tell your daughter that she is beautiful. Never comment on her weight or your spouse’s weight, even if they are thin. Help your daughter know that she is loved, wanted and accepted because of who she is, not because of how much she weighs or what she looks like.
  • Shop for the best look, not the lowest size. Size really doesn’t matter in the scheme of things. Some clothes are made small and some are made larger even though they may be the same size. Get several sizes, try them all on and see what looks best. Keep in mind that you can always tailor an outfit that, say, may be just right in the chest and arms but too large in the waist. Clothes are generic, they were not designed for you or your daughter, so if it doesn’t fit right, the fault is with the assembly line, not you or your daughter. Don’t focus on size, focus on fit.
  • Don’t over schedule. Make sure your daughter has time to play and rest. Over scheduling can lead to a feeling of being out of control because there is no time to unwind. Many girls will then control their food intake to an extreme. Limit extra-curricular activities and don’t pressure your daughter to perform. Straight A’s are not worth an eating disorder, nor do they guarantee success in life, so strive for balance, not perfection.
  • Ask questions. If and when your daughter comments on her weight, thighs or whatever, don’t just dismiss it with an ‘oh you look fine.’ Ask why she feels that way, what she wants to do about it and what does she think will happen if she does or doesn’t do something, always affirming her in the process and steering away from weight and looks to concentrate on health and wellness.

Genetics does play a role in eating disorders. Some girls are more prone than others. An innocent diet can lead one girl to starve herself while another one will simply lose a few pounds and be done with it. It’s very important for girls to eat the right kinds of fat to keep their brain and hormones functioning right. Avoid vegetable, soy, corn, cottonseed and canola oils and use butter, coconut oil, and olive oil instead. Avoid low fat and fat free foods, so use full fat dairy. Basically, you want to eat real food the way God made it. Don’t take the fat out. Fat is not the enemy and it does not cause obesity.

Follow the LOGIC…

I received this the other day from my friend, Edwin Shank, an area organic, grass based raw dairy farmer.

Edwin and his family are doing things right, here in South Central Pennsylvania.  The farm is gorgeous, the jersey herd beautiful, and the products wonderful!

Below read the week’s newsletter wherein Edwin seeks to follow the logic behind the purported dangers of consuming unpasteurized dairy products.

Hello Friends,
Okay, so last week’s Fresh Thoughts on Fresh Food stirred your thinking a little.  Many of you liked it and passed it on to friends, but some of you had further questions… questions particularly about the ‘building of immunity’ approach to health instead of ‘kill all bacteria’ approach to health. Permit me to explain a little further.
As I stated last week, these are my answers, not necessarily the answer or your answers.
Let’s start with an analogy. According to the CDC, there are nearly 3800 drowning deaths per year in USA. That works out to a little more than 10 deaths by drowning per day. For every death caused by drowning there are another 4 near-drownings involving hospitalization, and many times permanent brain damage.
These are sobering facts. This is reality for some families somewhere in America every day. It is only normal for parents and others who care for the health and well being of our communities to ask the obvious question. What can we do to protect ourselves and our loved ones from a similar tragedy?
Since all drowning occurs in water, we might quite logically conclude that water is the enemy and that the best preventive would be to prohibit people from getting into water. Make laws. Pass regulations. Establish a Federal Drowning Prevention agency to enforce the laws. The FDP would arrest anyone who dared to violate the law which obviously was established for public welfare.
You see where I’m going with this. The alternative drowning prevention is to learn to swim and to teach your children to swim. The ability to swim makes you and your loved ones practically immune to drowning while avoiding water like the plague only leaves your family more vulnerable. More vulnerable since you can be sure that sometime in your life, in spite of your best attempts, and those of the FDP, you or your children will find yourselves unexpectedly in water without the least idea how to save yourselves.
Swimming does not make one 100% immune to drowning of course, so the FDP will always publicize a few highly emotional stories per year (complete with videos) in which those who were experienced swimmers still drowned. Parents who dared to risk their children’s lives by attempting to teach them to swim could be prosecuted for willful endangerment and their children taken from them. After all, they were willfully, carelessly, callously ignoring data from the CDC which irrefutably documents thousands of deaths per year caused by water.
I know this analogy is not perfect, so don’t drag me through the coals to tell me so, but there are many parallels.
About 5000 people die per year in America of food borne illness. These also are sobering facts.  And it is only normal for parents and others to ask the obvious question. What can we do to protect ourselves?
Many well-meaning people have concluded that bacteria are the enemy and so have set out to kill… set out to sterilize themselves and their environment. Kill all the bacteria! Fight BAC!  Buy Purell… put a dispenser in every room. Get antibacterial soap. Anti-biotics for every sniffle. Outlaw unpasteurized cider. Pasteurize nuts and almonds too. Outlaw raw milk and raw milk cheeses. These foods may contain pathogens!
There is only one problem with these bacteriaphobic actions and reactions. In spite of our best attempts, in spite of living in constant fear of the microbe and in spite of government efforts to pass food safety regulation… If we chose to live this way, we and our children will someday find that a stray bacterium has penetrated into our sterile bubble… and our artificially protected, flabby immune systems will have no defense against it.
The alternative defense against foodborne illness is to embrace bacteria as a part of a larger eco-system within which we humans try to integrate ourselves.  We focus on life instead of killing. Pro-biotic instead of Anti-biotic. This is what raw milk, raw kefir and raw cheese and raw kombucha tea are all about… building immunity and health!  We learn to swim and teach our children to swim.  Instead of fearing the water we relax and enjoy life as God created it!  We embrace living whole foods. Whole foods full of immunity building probiotic bacteria, living foods full of nutrient absorbing living enzymes. Whole living foods full of unadulterated, unprocessed, unmessed-with, cell-nourishing, cell-repairing raw fats and protein.
Only living foods give life. Only living foods full of a diversity of natural microflora from our local, natural environment can provide the education and information that our immune systems desperately need to actually protect us as God designed it.
God has designed the entire eco-system to live in harmony with bacteria. The sooner we drop our hubris and accept this humbling fact the wiser we will be.

Silver Diner Gets a Little FRESHer

Mmmmm…Local Beef Burger from Silver Diner

Ok, I admit it.  Eating at a diner kind of makes me feel like a kid again.  It brings out the Peter Pan in me—I won’t grow up!  But, with four children of my own now, it gets more difficult to justify doing things just for fun.  Sitting in one of those diner booths with the retro pictures and the cute jukebox at each table actually begs one to get a burger and shake.  But I can’t do that now that I’m grown up and “responsible,” can I?  I make huge efforts to feed my kids organic and local foods.  I buy grass-fed beef and dairy.  I shop at farmers markets and I know most of the farms where our food comes from.

So imagine my delight to find out that I could have my shake and drink it too. I realize that being “responsible” is about being open and responsive to the circumstances and opportunities that life presents without always being rigid and following a set of rules.  There is one diner where I can have fun with my kids without compromising my food philosophy: Silver Diner.  They source their foods locally and even invite farmers to sell, market style, at their restaurants.  And to add icing to the cake, Silver Diner is now partnering with the producer of the movie FRESH—an inspiring window into the local foods move

Silver Diner has made a big splash recently with their new menus featuring “fresh and local” ingredients. It is a treat to find a restaurant or chef, who is truly committed to the entirety of the “local” message.  In addition to their commitment to “Fresh and local”, they are equally committed to helping children understand about food choices and where their food comes from.  Each diner has a TV screen in the lobbies.  These screens show clips from various music videos.  A few days ago I took 6 children (my four and a friend’s two) to one of the Diners and a music video on the screen captivated their attention while we waited for our table.  These screens are now also showing idyllic clips from the movie FRESH.  Young visitors to the diner, many of whom have never been on a farm, will see scenes from local farms.  These short scenes have the potential to convey the greater ramifications of food choices.

Featuring super heroes Joel Salatin and Will Allen

This inspiring film highlights what we can each do to increase access to fresh and local foods. FRESH graphically illustrates the contrast between the industrial food system and the “fresh” food system.  The film engages people about where their food comes from as it takes the viewer on a journey to several local farms that produce food for their communities.

Showing the movie trailer at Silver Diner has the potential to captivate a whole new audience as it motivates these customers to bring the movie to their communities. The film’s creators designed the film as a community educational tool.  Across the country individuals arrange screenings of the movie in their own communities (living rooms, churches, school, etc.) to significant response.  These screening events engage consumers where they are and inspire them to propel the fresh food system further forward.  With super heroes Will Allen—urban farmer extraordinaire—and Joel Salatin of Polyface farms, scenes from this movie are the perfect accompaniment to a fresh and local meal, and an amazing inspiration for all our budding super heroes.  It’s going to take all of us to encourage the rest of the restaurants to use fresh and local foods and educating those around us—especially our young ones—with tools such as this movie is a first step to transforming our food industry in such a way.

At Silver Diner, “FRESH” is not just a movie, it is a philosophy—a philosophy that is taken seriously because they realize their responsibility to their customers and to the producers of the food. Behind the scenes of FRESH, it is not just a movie, it is an inspiring invitation to a refreshing way of eating.  The partnership between Silver Diner and FRESH brings the message of “fresh and local” full circle so that children—and adults who wish they were still kids—can add depth to their diner experience.  Because they have chosen this direction for their diner, I can now responsibly enjoy my burger and shake with my children as we all sing along to “Puff the Magic Dragon.”  And unlike little Jackie Paper, who does grow up, today, I’m still a kid.

WILL ALCOHOL MAKE YOU SWEET?

ONLY TO MOSQUITOES!

IT’S SUMMER TIME . . .

And that means FUN, more time outdoors, backyard bar-b-ques and for many people, mosquitoes (I can think of a few States that battle this problem, including my current home in Florida!).

Do you hate them as much as me?  Or, should I say do they LOVE YOU as much as they love me?

When I was catching up on reading this past weekend, I came across this interesting article, and wanted to pass along the information from BottomLine Health about . . .

What MOSQUITOES HATE MOST

Along with some interjected commentary from me . . .

It’s not your imagination — mosquitoes really do find some people tastier than others. I’ve always suspected this, and now new UK research confirms that some lucky individuals produce certain skin oils that seem to repel mosquitoes… but, while fascinating, these findings aren’t at a point where we can put them to practical use. Since it’s summer, I thought it would be good to check on the latest expert advice about what’s effective and not effective… safe and not so safe… for keeping mosquitoes away.

This is important because not only are mosquito bites uncomfortable, they also can give you diseases such as West Nile Virus and encephalitis — even here in modern-day America.  Mosquito maven Susan M. Paskewitz, PhD, professor in the department of entomology at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, was happy to offer some helpful advice.

A special NOTE– if you have dogs in an area known for mosquitoes, BE SURE TO CHECK WITH YOUR VET about heartworm  prvention medication. Heartworms are transmitted by mosquitoes to dogs  and a few other species (this parasite is overwhelmingly found in dogs in mosquito territory).  Other animals that can be infected are cats, ferrets, foxes, sea lions, wolves and horses. If you miss one month of medication, your dog could get heartworm, and if left untreated, it’s a painful, fatal illness.  It’s also expensive to treat once diagnosed.  So as with anything, pay now (prevention) or pay later.

WHAT’S IN BUG SPRAY?

Dr. Paskewitz was reassuring about the safety of insect repellents, saying that there’s not much evidence that they are harmful. She told BottomLine Health that just about all the products sold today are formulated using one or more of the following substances…

• DEET. This chemical (on labels it may be called N,N-diethyl-3- methylbenzamide) was developed by the US Department of Defense
after WWII for military personnel stationed in tropical climates.    Dr. P told BLH it has supposedly been applied to humans
more than eight billion times since becoming commercially available  in 1957.  Between then and 2002, which is when a report on DEET safety  was  published in The New England Journal of Medicine, there were fewer than 50 known cases of serious adverse effects from DEET — most caused by incorrect use and most resolving with no long-term consequences.   But DEET-containing products do have the potential to irritate the skin of people who are sensitive and DEET should always be kept away from the eyes. Noting that DEET doesn’t accumulate in the body, Dr. Paskewitz  said that there’s no evidence that using DEET causes cancer or any other  long-term health concerns.

NOTE for parents from Debbie: The studies I reviewed showed that children seemed to be sensitive to DEET AND that should you choose to use DEET for yourself, it should be washed off prior to sleeping.

• Picaridin. This compound (its scientific name is KBR 3023) is odorless,  less oily and even less irritating to the skin and eyes than DEET, Dr.
Paskewitz told the BottomLine Health author.
• IR3535. Derived from natural compounds, this is the proprietary ingredient that supposedly makes Avon’s Skin So Soft Bug Guard products and BullFrog  Mosquito Coast sunblock work so well. It can be irritating if it gets in your eyes but is otherwise safe, Dr. P shared with BLH.
• Lemon Eucalyptus Oil. An extract from the lemon eucalyptus plant, the active ingredient is para-menthane-3,8-diol, and there is a synthetic
version (known as PMD) as well. The only potential issue uncovered by EPA safety tests is that it, too, can irritate the eyes.

How well do they work? Dr. Paskewitz said that all these products are equally effective when tested at 20% concentration — but noted that concentrations vary in commercial products, so check labels to compare strength.

How to use safely According to Dr. Paskewitz: Though none of these products is linked to long-term health concerns, virtually all of them can be irritating to the skin for some people and for the eyes (for practically everyone). Minimize the likelihood that this will happen by using the sprays, creams and wipes only where you need to — on exposed skin, not under clothing. When using a spray product, Dr. Paskewitz advises averting your face and avoiding your eyes (donning glasses can be helpful) and holding your breath while spraying. Wash hands
after applying to prevent getting the products in your eyes if you touch your face.  Avoid cuts, scratches and irritated skin… don’t get any on or near your mouth… and, after you come indoors, she advises washing all treated skin with soap and water.

If you’re prone to irritation, Dr. Paskewitz suggested trying a repellent formulated to be sprayed onto clothing, such as permethrin (Bug Off and Insect Shield are two such products).

AROMATHERAPY — NATURAL SCENTS THAT REPEL MOSQUITOS

If you prefer to take a natural approach, there are numerous plant-based oils that can be effective at keeping mosquitos away — peppermint, cinnamon, citronella, cedar, clove, lemongrass, rosemary, thyme, lavender, catnip, patchouli, tea tree oil, eucalyptus and
sage, to name a few.  But be careful — you’ve heard it before from BottomLine Health, but it bears repeating: Natural substances also have the potential for harm if used incorrectly.

How well do they work? These oils haven’t been tested by the EPA for this purpose, but a few smaller independent studies have found undiluted oils of citronella, patchouli, clove, catnip and Zanthoxylum limonella (lemon oil) quite helpful, sometimes offering more than two hours
of potent repellent power.

How to apply: Here’s the rub: Undiluted oils provide the best protection when applied directly to exposed skin. But they can also cause irritation and rashes and haven’t been tested for safety.  A good solution is to look for these oils in natural skin creams, lotions or oils that
use them as ingredients, formulated to be less irritating.

Debbie’s Personal Recipe: eucalyptus, lavender, lemon and lemongrass mixed together and apply neet (directly to skin) or  you can blend into an uncented lotion or a spray bottle of water.    Be sure to use a sunscreen when using citrus based essential oils because they make your skin more sensitive to sun.  Note that on children under the age of 5 ALL essential oils should be diluted 50%.

WHAT ELSE WORKS AGAINST THESE BLOOD SUCKERS?

Preventive advice includes doing all that you can to reduce the number of mosquitoes in your environment, suggests Dr. Paskewitz. This includes taking the following measures:

First things first — Eliminate standing water. Mosquitoes breed like crazy in ponds and other natural pools of water. To avoid bites, avoid these locations, particularly on days that are hot and still. Keep control over the mosquito population around your home by draining water anywhere that it might collect — even in small containers such as empty flower pots, spare tires, kiddie pools, etc.

Second, stay indoors at dawn and dusk. I know the mosquitoes love to eat me alive in the early morning and at twilight, so if there are lots in your area, try to stay indoors at these times.

Third, watch what you wear. Mosquitoes are attracted to dark colors, particularly red and violet, so wear lighter and brighter colors — also wear long sleeves and pants.

Finally, Paskewitz shares, don’t drink alcohol. Have to say that I’ve found no correlation here because me and the kids don’t drink at all and the mosquitoes eat us alive. My husband loves his beer and never gets bit.  Paskewitz’ research shows drinking alcohol may boost the sugar content in your sweat, making you more attractive to mosquitoes.

THE OBAMA EXECUTIVE ORDER – MORE HEALTHCARE

BUREAUCRACY, BUT NOT BACKDOOR CODEX

On June 10th, Barack Obama issued an Executive Order creating the “National Prevention, Health Promotion, and Public Health Council.  As with all government programs and bureaucracy, this additional layer of bureaucracy is ostensibly intended to do good, in this particular case to develop and promote a national strategy for improving Americans’ health.   As the Executive Order puts it, this Public Health Council will write up and give to the President “a list of national priorities on health promotion and disease prevention to address lifestyle behavior modification (including smoking cessation, proper nutrition, appropriate exercise, mental health, behavioral health, substance-use disorder, and domestic violence screenings) and the prevention measures for the five leading disease killers in the United States.”  Obviously, these Neanderthals have never heard of the Law of Unintended Consequences.

The Law of Unintended Consequences

The Law of Unintended Consequences is that actions of people – and especially of government – always have effects that are unanticipated or unintended.  Most often, however, this Law “illuminates the perverse, unanticipated effects of legislation and regulation.”  (See http://www.econlib.org/library/Enc/UnintendedConsequences.html)

So, for a government to create yet another costly and top-heavy “council” to help prevent illnesses may sound wonderful to some people – especially if it is to include some complementary and alternative approaches; but it is absolutely doomed to failure and to create more illness and more sickness in the United States.

The Federal government has already proven itself utterly incapable of successfully advancing any major program.  Whether it was President Johnson’s failed War against Poverty in the 1960s, President Nixon’s failed War against Cancer launched in 1970, President Ford’s “Whip Inflation Now” program that saw even frighteningly-higher inflation under President Carter, all of these Presidents’ War on Drugs, or President George W. Bush’s failed War on Terror, the list is endless.  You name it, whatever problem was addressed, that problem became significantly worse after millions and billions of dollars were wastefully pumped into these “Wars.”  And you do not even have to look far into the past, just think about the Federal government’s botched handling of the recent Hurricane Katrina and BP oil-spill disasters.

You do not achieve better health by centralizing health-care decisions in Washington, D.C.  You achieve better health by decentralizing health-care decisions and putting them back in the very hands of those most likely to suffer the benefits and detriments of good and bad decisions:  the individual man or woman.  More health freedom, not less, is the road to better health.

What the Executive Order Does

This Executive Order basically parallels what is already in the recently-passed Health Care Insurance Reform Act.  In that respect, it is nothing new.  (See text of Executive Order at http://www.thenhf.com/government_affairs/federal/ExOrder-HealthPromotionHealthCouncil.pdf.)

As mentioned, it creates a Public Health Council, which will have as its chairman the U.S. Surgeon General over a star-studded cast of Federal functionaries such as the Secretary of Agriculture, the Secretary of Labor, the Secretary of Health and Human Services, the Secretary of Transportation, the Secretary of Education, the Secretary of Homeland Security, the Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, the Chairman of the Federal Trade Commission, the Director of National Drug Control Policy, the Assistant to the President and the Director of the Domestic Policy Council, the Assistant Secretary of the Interior for Indian Affairs, the Chairman of the Corporation for National and Community Service, and the head of any other executive department or agency that the Chairman may determine to be appropriate.  Notice, though, that the head of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is not included. In fact, no one from FDA is included.

Of course, these high-brows will just meet and not condescend to do any real work, which work will be left to their assistants and swarm of lackeys.  And since – unlike in the free market – the feed-back mechanisms for their health decisions will be so attenuated, convoluted, and based in politics and not practical economics, these decision-makers will waste our money, their time, and promote ill health.

They are charged with coordinating and leading all Federal agency action on the “prevention, wellness, and health promotion practices, the public health system, and integrative health care in the United States.”  (Order, §3(a))  Further, they are to “develop, after obtaining input from relevant stakeholders, a national prevention, health promotion, public health, and integrative health-care strategy that incorporates the most effective and achievable means of improving the health status of Americans and reducing the incidence of preventable illness and disability in the United States, as further described in section 5 of this order.”  (Order, §3(b))

They will then “provide recommendations to the President and the Congress concerning the most pressing health issues confronting the United States and changes in Federal policy to achieve national wellness, health promotion, and public health goals, including the reduction of tobacco use, sedentary behavior, and poor nutrition,” (Order, §3(c)) and “consider and propose evidence-based models, policies, and innovative approaches for the promotion of transformative models of prevention, integrative health, and public health on individual and community levels across the United States.” (Order, §3(d))

An Advisory Group is also established by the Order.  The Group will have no more than 25 advisors from outside the Federal government, to be appointed by the President, and are to come from “a diverse group of licensed health professionals, including integrative health practitioners who are representative of or have expertise in: (1) worksite health promotion; (2) community services, including community health centers; (3) preventive medicine; (4) health coaching; (5) public health education; (6) geriatrics; and (7) rehabilitation medicine.”  (Order, §4)  The Order further states that the “Advisory Group shall develop policy and program recommendations and advise the Council on lifestyle-based chronic disease prevention and management, integrative health care practices, and health promotion.”  (Order, §4(c))

The Chairman is then to use the Advisory Group’s input, in consultation with the Council itself, to then “develop and make public a national prevention, health promotion, and public health strategy (national strategy).”  (Order, §5)  This strategy shall then be reported to the President and any relevant committees of Congress.  (Order, §6)

To some, this will sound great.  Integrative health?  Mentioned in an Executive Order?  But sitting in an Advisory Group in which integrative practitioners will almost certainly be outnumbered (outvoted)?  Then, advising the Surgeon General, who in turn might or might not use our integrative-health ideas to develop a national healthcare strategy?  Which strategy might or might not even be acted upon by a President put in power by special-interest groups antithetical to integrative healthcare?  Can you see how tenuous this “influential” connection becomes?  Smart people would call it “window-dressing,” because unfortunately that is all it will ever be.

One can always be hopeful.  But, to paraphrase H.L. Mencken, “To say that the cure for bad health-care legislation is for more good medicine to be part of it, is like saying that the cure for prostitution is for more virgins to enter brothels.”  Better to dismantle the bureaucracy, or at least reduce its powers, than to try to feed fresh meat piecemeal into corrupt and inept institutions.

Backdoor Codex?

Some well-intentioned persons – hyper-sensitive to the threat of Codex to our health freedoms, a threat with which we agree – have claimed that this Executive Order is a backdoor attempt to adopt Codex Alimentarius “science-based” guidelines in the United States.  These people point to Order Section 6(g), where it says that the Council’s report shall “contains specific plans to ensure that all prevention programs outside the Department of Health and Human Services are based on the science-based guidelines developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention under subsection (d) of this section.”  But does the use of the words “science based” mean that these guidelines are synonymous with Codex guidelines?

Not really.  While the Executive Order is real, it is not imposing Codex rules on the United States.  As NHF lobbyist Lee Bechtel correctly points out, “There is no direct policy link between this Council and Codex, or with the way in which the FDA regulates food and food supplements.”

Consider also that Section 6(d) (to which Section 6(g) refers) states: “(d) contains specific science-based initiatives to achieve the measurable goals of the Healthy People 2020 program of the Department of Health and Human Services regarding nutrition, exercise, and smoking cessation, and targeting the five leading disease killers in the United States.”  These “science-based” rules are to be issued by the CDC, not Codex.   In addition, the above deals with exercise and smoking cessation, which are outside the subject area of Codex guidelines, which only govern food.

Having said that, this 6(d) language does mention the word “nutrition” as well (albeit within the context of the Healthy People 2020 program of the DHS); and nutrition is a subject of Codex.  As such, “science based” guidelines applied here could allow a smoother interface between domestic and international food guidelines at a small contact point that they might possibly have in the future.  It would be akin to saying that panty-hose manufacturing techniques are related to food because the nylon fabric might someday be used in straining soup.  So, in a broader and greatly-more-general context, there is a very-small kernel of strained logic to support the belief that this is another small step towards the Codex “door.”  But is it the Door itself, backdoor or otherwise?  Absolutely not.
