The Liberation Diet Takes on Dr. Oz’s “BEACH” Body Plan

Posted by Lauren Snyder Grosz on April 30, 2010

“B is for a quick-slimming Breakfast.” Dr. Oz recommends always revving up your metabolism with breakfast.  Aim to get up to half of your total daily calories in the morning.  This advice is given based on a recent study that found that this simple trick shifts body chemistry, allowing dieters to get the big initial results of a low-carb plan sans the carb deprivation.  That’s a study I’d like to see.  What are the chances that it was paid for by a company who makes breakfast foods?  Among the delicious temptations, dieters can choose from fat-free yogurt, scrambled eggs, or Chex Multi-Bran.  These main entrees are supported by whole-grain English muffins and unlimited fruit.  The only thing to like here is that he refrains from calling for egg whites only.

Pastured eggs are highly recommended on The Liberation Diet; eggs with bacon, sausage, ham, fish, scrapple, or raw milk.  For frying it’s best to use butter or coconut oil.  Now that’s not a recommendation, you’ll find in any magazines catering to busy Mom’s, looking to take care of their families.

“E is for Eliminating the most fattening food of all.” Sugar and high fructose corn syrup spike your blood sugar and are loaded with empty calories. Dr. Oz says that whole fruit is the most slimming way to soothe a sweet tooth.

While The Liberation Diet concurs with Dr. Oz re sugar and high fructose corn syrup, it is key to remember that anything your mouth perceives as sweet is being turned into sugar by the body.  Kevin Brown and his co-author Annette Presley recommend eating fruit even less frequently than vegetables, and then only when in season and with real cream or some other healthy fat to increase absorption of antioxidants.

“A is for flab-blasting antioxidants.” Vegetables and brightly colored fruit continue to be linked to fat -burning and hunger control.  Dr. Oz says that they are extremely good for you and will provide plenty of energy.

Kevin Brown maintains that vegetables are certainly healthy, but not the foundation of health.  A good rule of thumb is to eat them in smaller proportion to fat and protein.  Always eat vegetables with saturated fat, to increase the absorption of antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals.  So remember to add butter or a lovely cream sauce to get the most out of your vegetables.

“C is for a Chocolatey weight-loss surprise.” Just when you thought he was done beating the antioxidant drum, Dr. Oz informs that dark chocolate is loaded with antioxidants, “especially a certain type linked to reduced hunger.”  I’d tell you which one, but readers are left to guess.

On The Liberation Diet, chocolate isn’t verboten, it simply isn’t touted as an antioxidant, hunger curbing, mood elevating, must have.  Eat well 80% of the time and enjoy an exceptional chocolate desert occasionally!

“H is for fat-flushing H20. Dr. Oz thinks people are so stupid that they routinely confuse thirst and hunger.  His wisdom here is to drink water whenever you’re hungry and that way you’ll always feel full and thus end up eating less.  I’m not really sure how much water Americans now consume, but I’ve looked around and it doesn’t appear to be curing anyone’s hunger.  Finally, when you tire of water, grab some green tea.  You’ll never guess why.  Yes, that’s right!  Green tea is loaded with antioxidants!

The Liberation Diet’s take on water is most refreshing because it’s something that is rarely talked about.  There is an epidemic of heart burn and acid reflux out there.  What really happens when dieters are convinced to drink water before eating in order to curb their appetites?  Hydrochloric acid is secreted into the stomach when we eat so that  food can be digested.  Drinking water dilutes this acid, thus impairing digestion and promoting digestive ailments.  While drinking excessive amounts of water will not flush toxins from the body, as is commonly thought, it most certainly will flush vital minerals from the body.  In short, drink when you are thirsty, but try to refrain from drinking at least an hour before eating.  In terms of quenching thirst water doesn’t even come close to Kombucha, which also happens to be a live fermented drink.  Real milk and broth are also excellent options.

Dr. Oz’s BEACH diet only works because it’s based on severe calorie restriction.  Menus do not exceed 1,200 calories.  I can only imagine the binging that takes place when coming off of this diet.  Dr. Oz gives us nothing new here.  It’s the same old vegetable pushing low-fat nonsense that got us into trouble in the first place.

The Liberation Diet extolls fat as the most important nutrient in the diet!  Half of your fat intake should be from saturated fats found in animal foods, coconut, and palm oils.  Not only is this a delicious way to get key nutrients, but it is also the best option for feeling full and satisfied when you eat.  This is why people on The Liberation Diet typically eat only twice a day.  They are sated when they eat and so they eat less and loose weight.  There are many other important differences between this diet and the ones that are being peddled to women.  Some of those have been highlighted in this post, but the best way to smash out of food prison is to buy the book and liberate yourself.

Reach for your Dreams!

Posted by Maureen Diaz on April 24, 2010

When needing to make changes in some facet of your life, it is often helpful to create visual reminders of what you want to achieve.  This is the idea behind “Dream Boards”.

To deal with my weight issues in the past, I found it helpful to place a photo of myself, looking fat, on the refrigerator door. Previously I had put up a picture of a younger me, looking very thin and pretty, but this soon made me feel even worse about myself, as returning to that former body condition didn’t  seem attainable.  Instead I found it motivating to be given a visual reminder of how bad I looked, which then helped me to leave that  refrigerator door closed!

So now that I am nearing the end of my weight loss and feeling good about myself again, I have created a Dream Board filled with images of the things in my life which are most important to me (mostly people, not things).  It includes written goals for what I most want to accomplish in the next few years. This is an encouragement to me each day as it constantly reminds me of where I want to be.  It is like the proverbial “kick in the pants” that keeps me on track!  (Click on the  button below to see my dream board.)

Dream Board pdf

I would suggest that you create your own dream board, containing pictures of the things that are most important to you.  Set realistic goals, and find images to represent those goals.  Use photographs both old and new, magazine clippings, letters from loved ones, whatever it is that will remind you each day of your goals! Assemble them as simply or as elaborately as you like on poster board, or print something up from your computer, like I did.  Place this in a prominent place so that you will constantly be encouraged to fulfill your dreams!

You may find it helpful to replace your dream board from time to time with a newer, updated one.  This way you will not become conditioned to the same old thing, allowing it to become part of the back ground that you no longer notice.

No go ahead and reach for your dreams!

Misty Down 23 Pounds!

Posted by Kevin Brown on April 22, 2010

Liberation Diet Strikes Again!

Hello Kevin

On another note, I wanted to update you on my progress.  I took a tumble at the conference the first night we were there; I tripped over a skid while packing totebags.

I chalked up my pain to bad floor padding and the 18 hours days of non-stop walking.

I was diagnosed with a stress fracture in my pelvic bone and a sever misalignment of the hip bones.

I was told I couldn’t exercise until the fracture healed and then I underwent a few months of readjustments.

The good news is that I started hitting your program on March 5 when I was finally released from everything.

As of this morning, I am down a whopping 23.8 pounds.

I’m doing cardio every day and will be starting a gym routine next week.

Thanks for the inspiration.  I’ll keep you posted.

America is too FAT to Fight

Posted by Kevin Brown on April 21, 2010

Report says school food making kids unfit to serve

WASHINGTON (AP) — Too fat to fight? Many American children are so overweight from being fed french fries, pizza and other unhealthy foods at school lunchrooms that they cannot handle the physical rigors of being in the military, a group of retired officers say in a new report.

National security is threatened by the sharp rise in obesity rates for young people over the last 15 years, the group Mission: Readiness contends. Weight problems are now the leading medical reason that recruits are rejected, the group says, and thus jeopardize the military’s ability to fill its ranks.

In a report released Tuesday, the group says that 9 million young adults, or 27 percent of all Americans ages 17 to 24, are too fat to join the military. The retired officers were on Capitol Hill advocating for passage of a wide-ranging nutrition bill that aims to make the nation’s school lunches healthier.

The military group acknowledges that other things keep young adults out of the armed services, such as a criminal record or the lack of a high school diploma.

Although all branches of the military now meet or exceed recruitment goals, retired Navy Rear Adm. James Barnett Jr., a member of the officers group, says the obesity trend could affect that.

“When over a quarter of young adults are too fat to fight, we need to take notice,” Barnett said. He noted that national security in the year 2030 is “absolutely dependent” on reversing child obesity rates.

Recruitment isn’t the only problem posed by obesity. According to the report, the government spends tens of millions of dollars every year to train replacements for service members discharged because of weight problems.

This isn’t the first time the military has gotten involved in the debate over school lunches. During World War II, military leaders had the opposite problem, reporting that many recruits were rejected because of stunted growth and inadequate nutrition. After the war, military leaders pushed Congress to establish the national school lunch program so children would grow up healthier.

The program was established in 1946, “as a measure of national security,” according to the original bill language.

Today, the group is urging Congress to eliminate junk food and high-calorie beverages from schools, put more money into the school lunch program and develop new strategies that help children develop healthier habits.

The school lunch bill, currently awaiting a Senate vote, would establish healthier options for all foods in schools, including vending machine items. The legislation would spend $4.5 billion more over 10 years for nutrition programs.

The Army is already doing its part to catch the problem earlier, working with high schoolers and interested recruits to lose weight before they are eligible for service, says U.S. Army Recruiting Command’s Mark Howell. He added that he had to lose 10 pounds himself before he joined the military.

“This is the future of our Army we are looking at when we talk about these 17- to 24-year-olds,” Howell said. “The sad thing is a lot of them want to join but can’t.”

Culture Club Calls Liberation Diet “Best Program Ever!”

Posted by Kevin Brown on April 19, 2010

Real Food advocates Elaina and William Luther are running an incredible real food program in Pasadena, California, called CultureClub101.

They prepare and teach others how to culture and ferment food so that it is much healthier and more digestible. Elaina has great and unique recipes and her every growing business is a reflection of her passion for helping others with real food.

Recently William and Elaina hosted a Liberation Wellness event and learned the amazing protocols which help even the healthiest of eaters lose weight and become even healthier!

Here is a report from Elaina and William from their short time with the Liberation Diet!

WilliamElainaLuther

William -

I’ve been on the Liberation Diet for only five weeks and have so far lost 20lbs! My goal is to lose 35lbs. total.

1. I’m able to fit into clothes that I haven’t been able to wear in 10 years as I am down 3 belt sizes.

2. I’m only eating one very nutrient dense meal a day but my energy level has greatly improved.

3. I feel like I have a new level of mental acuity, awareness, and focus on tasks better.

4. I’m experiencing more restful nights sleep.

5. I feel better about myself and have gained confidence that I haven’t had before.

William Luther

Elaina-

I have been on a nutrient dense diet for a few years now but have maintained extra weight.

I was so relieved to learn that 1 or 2 meals per day is sufficient for health and vitality provided they are nutrient dense meals. So, when I cut out my lunches and started eating breakfast only when I actually got hungry (which was never when right when I awakened) but in the late morning, and then a second meal early evening, I lost 11 pounds without even trying!

I have more time and energy during the day and have cut out 1/3 of my grocery bill!

I enjoy food more and my sense of taste seems to have become more discerning.

This is the best program ever and one that I can happily stay with for good!

Moving Well to Live Well: Exercising with Children

Posted by Liz Reitzig on April 16, 2010

Moving to Inspire

I had my fourth child about a year and a half ago.  Today I have great health and am in the best shape of my life.  Exercising with my children is an important priority not just for the sake of my own body, but to make movement a fundamental aspect of my children’s lives as well.  I grew up active and even before I had children, I knew that I wanted my children to grow up outdoors and active.  Now, with four young children, it is increasingly important for me to stay active—not just because I want to stay fit and healthy, but because it is imperative to set a great example for them and instill in them the habits of an active lifestyle.  I wish to inspire in my children the desire to live well in all ways—eating, thinking, resting and moving. Like eating well, thinking positively and resting well, how we exercise is a lifestyle choice that will contribute to our health and work synergistically with other healthy lifestyle choices to empower each of us to live rich, full lives.

Baby Wearing: The Ultimate in Weight Bearing Exercise

When my first child was born, I got all the necessary kid accessories including several variations of stroller.  I ended up not using the stroller and opting for the lighter, more convenient baby sling that brought baby and me closer.  As I did my routines with a baby attached to my front or back, I realized that this was the ultimate in weight-bearing exercise that doctors tout as great for increasing one’s bone density.  My pregnancy weight flew off and I returned to my pre-pregnancy weight by the time my baby was 8 months old.  I felt great doing all the activities I loved knowing that I had my baby with me.  I hiked, took walks, went to the beach, and did all errands with this great “weight vest” on. So, if you’re lucky enough to have one of these “free” 8-30 pound weighted vests, go ahead and make the most of it!  This mode of baby transportation will ultimately help keep parents fit.

Everyday Exercise Opportunities

With children, there are about a million opportunities to emphasize movement that have them learning to be fit and simultaneously inspiring the desire to stay active and adventurous throughout their lives.  Now that all my children are at least walking, we have some wonderful adventures together: hikes in the woods, trips to the pool or beach, or nearby fields to play field sports, horseback riding, rock climbing and of course many trips to playgrounds.  These adventures keep us all fit and teach them how fun it is to live actively.

For my own fitness, more important than the adventures are the every day chores and how I tackle them.  Every routine around the house is an opportunity for exercise: washing dishes—a chance to do calf raises or leg exercises; laundry means many trips up and down the stairs often embraced at a run or two steps at a time; vacuuming brings lots of laughter from the kiddos with me taking high steps to strengthen hip flexors—part of the all-important core muscle group.  Sitting on the couch reading out loud to my toddlers can easily coincide with working my abs.  Basically, any activity with children can become a great opportunity for exercise—toning and strengthening a chosen muscle group.

Some Days Are Easier Than Others

Moving into Personal Fitness

After my fourth child was born, I had a bit more trouble getting back into the shape I wanted to.  I still followed all my usual rules about wearing baby, adventuring with the children and making everyday duties into exercise opportunities.  But, I realized the importance of doing something structured that I like so that when my life is not so kid-centric, I can continue meeting my own exercise and fitness goals.

I have found many ways to fit in a workout that will strengthen my abilities and help me achieve the results I desire.  I loved running in high school so I took that up a few mornings each week—weather permitting.  Even just a one-mile run in the mornings gives my energy a boost and gives me a few minutes of peace and quiet before tackling the challenges of the day.  A friend gave me some great exercise videos that I sometimes do in the mornings when I get up before the kids, or even while they are eating breakfast.  Being mommy still comes first, and the videos give me the structure and motivation I need with the flexibility of attending to four children.  Granted, I do not get a workout done every day, but I certainly get enough done that I’m likely in the best shape of my life.  And the days I can’t fit one in, I’m still getting great playtime exercise while bonding with my children.  It’s a win-win for all of us.

Stressed out?

Posted by Annette Presley on April 8, 2010

We live in a world that operates by the motto “go, go, go.” After school, work, laundry, soccer, dance, band practice and PTA meetings, when do we have time to just relax and enjoy life?

Stress plays a huge role in obesity and chronic disease. One of the reasons we are so stressed out is because we have too much to do and no time to unwind. We run from one event to the other and rarely have time to spend with family and friends or in hobbies or leisure. We don’t take time out for ourselves to refresh and energize.

Here a few tips to getting your life back on track so you can balance work with play and rest.

  1. Seriously evaluate your schedule. Do you really have to do everything you are doing? Are there things you can assign to someone else, drop altogether or pay someone else to do? As much as we would like to believe this world stays afloat because of all our efforts, it doesn’t. Giving up something unnecessary up will not halt progress, but it will improve your quality of life. You are not the only person who can do some of the things you are doing. You may be the only one who can be a mother to your children, but you are not the only one who can do the dishes.
  2. Learn to say no. We really need to learn this word. You are not obligated to do everything you are asked to do. Really, you are not obligated to do anything someone else asks you to do. You have the right to choose whether or not you even want to do what someone asks you to do. If you can’t say “no,” then say, “let me check my schedule and I’ll get back to you.” This will give you time to think about how this activity will impact your life and the life of your family. It will also give you time to rehearse and get comfortable with your “no.”
  3. Have a set time for you. You need time to relax and unwind, time to read, think, meditate, smell the flowers or whatever it is you do to distress and take care of your needs.
  4. Schedule some technology-free time every week. Turn off the cell phone, TV and computer. You will be amazed at how freeing it is not to be tied down to these things even for a little while.
  5. Don’t forget to play. It is important to engage in fun activities on a regular basis, whether it’s a painting class, playing dolls with your daughter or tennis with your spouse. Play helps you loosen up and relax and it provides contentment which is important for reducing stress.

There is more to life than work. We are meant to enjoy this life and the beautiful things in this world. We are human and we all need some down time. Our health depends on it.

Tell us how you relax and de-stress.

1930′s Nutrition

Posted by Kevin Brown on April 2, 2010

There is a lot of great truth on this video, how far away from this truth have we fallen!

In particular, at about 10 minutes in:

“The Protective Foods Form the Basic Diet.
Here are typical foods at the Naval Academy:
1 quart of milk per day in addition to that used in cooking.
Eggs for breakfast 4 times a week.
Meat twice a day.
And liberal quantities of fruits, vegetables, cheese and butter.
For dessert, ice cream almost every day.”

Even though it was a “National Dairy Council Production,” obviously our government was on board. Compare that diet to the carbage of fake foods our military members get now. Is it any wonder mental disturbances are increasing among our returning vets?

Are You On the Right Track?

Posted by Debbie Wysocki on March 25, 2010

Are You Driving on The Right Track to Take You Where Your Want to Go?

It is March 25th and we are looking April 1st square in the Face.

That means 2010 is almost 25% gone — and we have 9 months to
change our course — if we are off track for our goals.

So perform a ‘check-up’ to be sure you are you will reach you goals for 2010.

Here is something that crossed my desk from my friend Max Steingart– I hope it speaks to you the way it did to me:
SUCCESSFUL DECISIONS

If you don’t run your own life, someone else will. You’re in control of your life
to the degree that you make decisions.

To control the outcome of anything, you control the action at the point of decision making.
If you let others make decisions for you, you give up control. When you control the decisions, you control the actions.

Take charge of your life, so there is no longer a need to ask permission of others.
When you ask permission, you’re giving someone “veto” power over your life.

Only you are responsible for your life. Take control and start making those decisions.
***

So how will you apply this?

We get performance reviews at work . . . our kids get report cards at school . . . we need to be disciplined enough to track our goal performance.

  • Have you De-Cluttered your Closets
Have you stuck to your exercise program
Have you got ‘beach body’ ready
Is your office organized (or are you still a piler)?
Have you written the book you wanted to
    How about those Spanish lessons
Did you start that business you mentioned last year?

Jim Rohn says we’re where at because of our daily habits. Small decisions repeated daily — I tell my kids the small
things that make a difference are easy to do . . . and easy not to do!  And this can be anything from flossing your teeth
to making a 10th follow-up phone call to a prospective customer.  Easy to do . . . and definitely easy not to do.

Give a shout out and let us know what your goals are for this year and if you are on track — let us know if we can assist you.
Liberation Wellness can has many program to assist with both total wellness, diet, and exercise.  I can assist with home business
questions/connections.  We’re here to celebrate with you.
