FDA CONCEDES RAW MILK ACROSS STATE LINES OK FOR PERSONAL CONSUMPTION
But continues to broadcast misinformation about unpasteurized dairy
Washington, DC ( November 17, 2011)—In a statement issued on November 1, concurrent with a raw milk freedom rally held outside FDA headquarters in Silver Spring, Maryland, the agency conceded that it “has never taken, nor does it intend to take, enforcement action against an individual who purchased and transported raw milk across state lines solely for his or her own pe rsonal consumption” [www.fda.gov/Food/FoodSafety/Product-SpecificInformation/MilkSafety/ucm277854.htm]. This statement reverses FDA’s prior position in which the agency reserved the option of taking action against individual consumers crossing state lines with raw milk. Federal regulation 21 CFR § 1240.61 prohibits the introduction of raw milk for human consumption into interstate commerce.
A caravan of moms brought raw milk across state lines on November 1 and served it to rally participants in front of FDA headquarters.
“Unfortunately, FDA’s announcement allowing individuals to transport raw milk across state lines is filled with the same misinformation that the agency has spread in the past,” says Sally Fallon Morell, president of the Weston A. Price Foundation, an organization that sponsors A Campaign for Real Milk, aimed at universal access to clean raw milk. “FDA continues to insist that raw milk is dangerous, when even the agency’s own exaggerated list of outbreaks shows that raw milk is safer than other foods.”
“FDA lists outbreaks associated with raw cheese, produced in less than sanitary conditions, as ‘outbreaks caused by raw milk,’ thereby inflating the number of illnesses associated with raw milk,” says Fallon Morell. “The actual number of illnesses associated (but not necessarily proved) with raw milk is about forty-two per year, which makes raw milk a very safe food given the large number of raw milk consumers. No deaths have been associated with raw milk during the past twelve years, but three people have died from tainted pasteurized milk.”
FDA insists that raw milk drinkers constitute less than 1 percent of the population. Yet a 2007 government survey found that about 3 percent of the population consumes raw milk, or about nine million people. This number is likely to be higher today as raw milk consumption is growing rapidly. Even in the state of Maryland, where raw milk sales are illegal, over 3 percent of respondents stated that they drank raw milk. “This milk is coming from Pennsylvania, where raw milk sales are legal,” says Pete Kennedy, president of the Farm-to-Consumer Legal Defense Fund, “to the great detriment of Maryland farmers.” According to Kennedy, hundreds of thousands of dollars of farm sales each year flow from Maryland to Pennsylvania.
The Farm-to-Consumer Legal Defense Fund is currently representing citizens challenging the interstate ban on raw milk in an Iowa federal district court .
According to Fallon Morell, “FDA continues to insist that no science exists to substantiate the nutritional and health benefits of raw milk, yet we now have five European studies, published in peer reviewed journals, showing that raw milk provides powerful protection against asthma and allergies. And there is copious scientific research showing that pasteurization of milk denatures and diminishes the effectiveness of enzymes and vitamins in the milk.”
Moreover, raw milk is designed to build the immune system—the components that do this are denatured by the heat process of pasteurization. FDA claims that the elderly, the immune-compromised, children and pregnant women especially should avoid raw milk. “These are the very people who need it the most,” says Fallon Morell.
The Weston A. Price Foundation is a nutrition education non-profit with 550 local chapters worldwide, and close to 13,000 members. The organization works to educate the public about the health benefits of unprocessed milk from grass-based dairies through its Campaign for Real Milk, http://realmilk.com. |

I was inspired last week by Jimmy Moore’s article describing his fast. Like him, I had only managed 24 hour fasts in the past, and had always intended to do more. Also like Jimmy, I am a lover of food; real food, good food in particular! And so I never seemed to quite get around to denying myself the pleasure of my daily eggs & butter, raw cream or cheese, or grass-fed burger, for more than a day. But after reading Jimmy’s post I figured, “Hey! If he can do it, I can do it!” Thus after mulling over the particulars the weekend, I decided to start this week, today in fact! But I am doing things slightly different.
First, I am starting out with 3 days but am hoping to stretch it to a full week. Does this leave me a convenient out? Well, perhaps, but I am really intending to continue past the 3 day mark and get into days 5, 6, & 7 for the accelerated benefits that a fast of this length can provide. But I’ve a lot to accomplish this week and next, so if I just feel too weak and yucky after 3 days I at least want to have the “out” if needed.

My approach to what will be “allowed” into my body is also somewhat different from Jimmy’s. For instance, no diet sodas (or other) for me! No neurotoxins, no phosphorous acid to rob my body (bones in particular) of minerals. And also no bouillon cubes. Jimmy, shame on you; you should know better than this!!! Isn’t the point of the fast to clear your body of toxic sludge? Why put more of it in there?! (And no, those little artificially-flavored MSG-laden cubes do not provide electrolytes!)
I will not continue with my supplemental coconut oil simply because I want my body to access for energy solely what is already there, stored around my middle. And in the process those storage cells will be releasing needed minerals and electrolytes, as well as toxins. I’m not even sure that I will take my much respected fermented cod liver oil. Perhaps later in the week. What do you think?
The plan is to do 3 days of only water with fresh lemon juice, and my teas (black & herbal) with stevia & raw milk/cream. The tea is my crutch, like Jimmy’s soda only wayhealthier! Additionally I will have a glass of fermented beet kvass each day, as this is a powerful internal cleanser and rebuilder. It has already been nearly 24 hours since I have eaten anything and this is all I have had

I make my own, but in a pinch Zukay is great!
After 3 days if I feel the need I will allow myself bone broth (again, not commercial bouillon/broth). This is healing, therapeutic, and provides enough easily assimilated nutrition to keep me going for a long time. I will also have cultured raw cream available so that I can have a spoonful 3 times a day if desired. This will also help inoculate my cleansing gut with beneficial microbes which will in turn aid the “housecleaning”!
One more facet to my plan is rather distasteful to most, but very important: coffee enemas. While in little use these days, coffee enemas were in times past a standard of care. This will help push my liver to throw off and purge stored toxins, which is what I am really going for! Weight loss will be embraced as well, but I realize that the reality of a fast is that you are shedding more water initially, than fat.
Exercise is something which has been lacking over the winter, but I plan to continue increasing or at least maintain what I am currently doing: jogging/walking (intermittent intensity) 1+ mile 3-4 times a week, and dancercize 2-3 times a week. Additionally I remain physically active with mucking a barn and running up 2 flights of steps everyday as the need arises (in other words, I don’t send my children on my errands!)
After completing the fast I know that it is important to ease back into eating solid foods, so I will do so with raw, non-starchy vegetables, bone broth, and lightly cooked meat.
I hope you guys can all cheer me on in this endeavor, and that some will join in with me. Let me know if you are fasting and how it is going, and I’ll keep everyone posted on my own progress!
And Jimmy: hey, thanks for the inspiration!

The low-carb blogosphere has been ablaze this week after Gary Taubes appeared on The Dr. Oz Show in what many thought was an ambush against healthy low-carb living. In fact, there was one segment where Dr. Oz went on a low-carb diet for 24 hours (we won’t even talk about how idiotic that is right now, but I’ll be doing a response video to that entire boondoggle soon) and he made an illustration with the food he was eating for a snack. Using pepperoni slices and string cheese, he said “Here’s how I see it, that’s my artery” referring to the curled slice of pepperoni followed by him referring to the string cheese going through the hole in the pepperoni stating “and this is the plaque.” After a smug smacking of the side of his cheek, he concludes, “That’s how I envision it” which is met with raucous laughter from The Dr. Oz Show audience. Really? Is this same old tired, worn out argument against livin’ la vida low-carb still being used by seemingly intelligent medical professionals like Dr. Mehmet Oz? Unfortunately so. But is it true? Do low-carb diets simply cause more harm than good by consuming foods that are higher in fat and lower in carbohydrates? Let’s look at the story of one of my readers who has been eating low-carb for the past 20 years and recently had a sophisticated test conducted to see what kind of damage her high-fat, moderate protein, low-carb way of eating has had on her body.
She e-mailed me that she recently had a wellness exam after recommitting herself to a “clean” low-carb lifestyle again starting in May 2010 and she discovered that her cholesterol was slightly higher (36 points up) than normal. However, instead of medication, she was put on a high-quality, pharmaceutical-grade fish oil supplement. Now that’s pretty amazing in this day and age of handing out statin drugs like they’re candy, but the “best news” is what happened next. At the same time they checked her cholesterol, she had an arterial ultrasound test called Carotid Intima-Media Thickness (CIMT) done as well. It’s a sophisticated test where they use a doppler to capture images of the carotid, femoral, and abdominal arteries to see if there is any plaque buildup to be concerned with. Plaque that penetrates the arterial wall can lead to a condition known as atheroschlerosis where the arteries harden and become blocked which can eventually lead to a heart attack or stroke. Dr. Oz was certainly insinuating on his show that eating a diet that consists of fat and very few carbohydrates would lead to this, but check out what happened next when my reader got her results.
The nurse practitioner called me and told me that my results were some of the best she had ever seen! My actual age is 43, but my arteries measured that of a 25 year old!
WOW! When she received these astonishing results from the nurse, my reader revealed to her what she had been doing–the healthy low-carb lifestyle! The nurse then “acted a little surprised” and was “offended” that my reader didn’t tell her about what she was doing sooner. When asked whether she lost any weight eating this way, my reader said she had shed over 30 pounds since May 2010 and that low-carb living makes her “feel better, look better, and act better” than anything else she’s ever tried.
It is just the way I have to eat for the rest of my life.
Obviously, she is super-stoked about the results of her CIMT test and now has a newfound confidence that livin’ la vida low-carb is “not harming my body at all.”
My liver and kidney functions were fine, as well as all of the rest of the blood work.
And although her cholesterol is slightly elevated, we know that most of those tests tend to focus on LDL and total cholesterol rather than the triglyceride/HDL ratio which is a much better indicator of heart health risk than what is typically measured. I have long challenged anyone to prove to me that “high” cholesterol is unhealthy. There’s just no solid evidence that exists substantiating this oft-repeated but never proven claim. Even worse, most doctors seem to be so clueless about cholesterol except to pull out their prescription pad to write down Lipitor or Crestor for their none-the-wiser patients. Why does a non-medically trained layperson like myself seem to know more about lipid health than a cardiologist like Dr. Oz? Maybe he likes the money he makes cutting into people’s chests (as he bragged so much about in the Taubes interview) while simultaneously taking sponsorship from advertisers who create products that are the real culprit in cardiovascular disease, namely high-carb, grain-based cereals.
This is one reason why Gary Taubes refused to have his cholesterol numbers run on his appearance on The Dr. Oz Show on Monday because the numbers are meaningless without the proper context. It was a setup that he refused to participate in knowing he wouldn’t have an opportunity to properly explain the importance of measuring LDL particle size with an NMR LipoProfile test, for example. In fact, Taubes told me that he was able to share about this distinction with LDL cholesterol but the producers cut it out of the final version of the segment. Gee, what a surprise! Look for a blog post about this from Gary at his blog coming soon.
As for the fabulous results my reader experienced after being on a low-carb diet for the past 20 years, all I can say is WAY TO GO! While people like Dr. Oz may not think someone can live long-term on a diet consisting of meats, eggs, cheese, green vegetables, butter, and the rest of the incredible foods we enjoy eating on this healthy lifestyle change, you’re proving that’s just not the case. Not only are you doing it, but your health is better than it ever would have been eating any other way. Congratulations to you for choosing low-carb as your preferred nutritional plan and for inspiring us all in our own low-carb journey to be confident and proud of the way livin’ la vida low-carb is improving our health on a daily basis!

Believe it or not, it’s already time to “Spring forward” with your clocks this Sunday morning at 2AM so the sunlight will shine a little later into the day. It’s the first real shift from the cold winds of winter to the blossoming promise of Springtime and summer season that is to come over the next few months. When I told my wife Christine about the time change coming this Sunday, she exclaimed, “Already?!” Yep, it’s here and I for one am happy to see it. Living in the comfy confines of South Carolina, we don’t have the extreme cold temperatures and gobs of snow that so many others to the north of us have to deal with throughout the months of December through March, but it has been just a wee bit nippy this winter compared with past ones. I say bring on the warmer weather, baby, and none too soon! And I’ve got just the thing to help you celebrate the right way as you “Spring forward” this weekend–36 new and interesting low-carb, Paleo and health blogs that I really think you should know about!
As you know, I enjoy “paying it forward” by highlighting my fellow diet and health bloggers who are doing excellent work continuing on the conversation about what healthy living is all about. Encouragement

Don’t we all love it!
Don’t we all need it . . . particularly in today’s challenging times?
Dr. John Maxwell shares in his book titled Relationships 101 the following:
1. Most people don’t have faith in themselves.
2. Most people don’t have someone who has faith in them.
3. Most people can tell when someone else has faith in them.
4. Most people will do anything to live up to your faith in them.
*******
Ok now here are some of my thoughts:
Think about how isolated most people are . . .
They drive by themselves to an office . . .
A large part of communication is by email or texting . . .
Most people dont sit down to dinner with family. . .
Extended family is a thing of the past.
On a brighter note . . .
What can you do to encourage, affirm and lift up other people?
When you do these things, you not only become magnetic, but you truly change lives!
When you see more in others than they see in themselves (and tell them), those people will become like a flower that has water and sun . . . they are going to blossom!
Find something positive about the people you are around.
We all have ‘learning’ experiences . . .
sometimes known as failures . . . remind others that it is just that . . . an experience that can help them grow into the person they are meant to be.
Help people visualize their success and believe that they can WIN.
Every day when I pick the kids up from school, we have 5 questions . . . the last two are the most important:
1. What did you liek best about your day?
2. Did you have any challenges today?
3. What are you looking forward to tomorrow?
4. Who did you help today?
5. Who did you encourage?
Make a Difference in someone else’s life, and you make a difference in your life!
Share with us how you are encouraging others . . . members of your family, friends, community. How is this making a difference for them? How is this making a difference for you?
Our Team is about building YOUR DREAMS and believing in YOU. Thank you for sharing with us!

The FDA recently ordered Morningland Dairy, a small family farm in Missouri, to destroy 50,000 pounds of raw cheese.
It all started when Morningland got caught up in the Rawesome Food Club raid in California a few months ago. Morningland cheese was confiscated by FBI, FDA, California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA), and Health Department agents who entered the raw food club with guns drawn.
On August 24th, 55 days after the Rawesome raid, the CDFA reported it had found dangerous Listeria and Staphylococcus bacteria in two Morningland cheeses.
Since then, Morningland Dairy has been visited by the FDA and the Missouri Milk Board, and have been ordered to destroy all their cheese stock – some 8 months of work – the value of which is approximately $250,000.
The FDA also recently announced a nationwide recall of Morningland cheese, even though no one has reported any illness from Morningland products in the dairy’s 30-year history.
Morningland asserts that the CDFA analysis and subsequent tests were illegitimate, but the dairy’s efforts to convince the Missouri Milk Board to retest its inventory have been unsuccessful.
Devotees of raw dairy are concerned that the FDA is trying to enact an outright ban on raw cheese. This idea is particularly troubling given that many of the finest cheeses in the world are made from raw milk. Want to hear the rest? …That is the question.

K2 Athena anyone? I might just sell them to you real cheap... Or not.
I was one happy camper Friday evening when I happened upon the very pair of in-line skates which I had been wanting to purchase, and on clearance! The last pair, demo model, and they happened to be my size; wha-whoo! If you have been following my blog for any length of time you know that I have been wanting these for a long time, and thus could not have been more excited!
So yesterday afternoon we took the kids to the park for roller blading and bike riding. I was the last one ready, taking at least 10 minutes to get every pad in place, straps fastened, and helmet properly fit . Ready, set, off we go… Not quite
Within 5 minutes I was on the ground, thankful for all those pads but hurting badly enough that 2 women came over with concern; they could see the pain in my face. Did I want help getting up? “No,” I said, “If I am to do this thing I must learn how to get back on my feet”. It took awhile.
Having discovered that stopping (safely) was an important skill to learn, I determined to head over to the basketball court to practice on a level surface. “Okay, I can do this,” I thought. Sure!
Finally I decided that maybe I could handle just a little stretch of flat trail. After all, my kids really wanted me to skate with them, were being very patient and willing to wait for me, and they were part of the appeal to do this to begin with. That, and they make it look so easy! Okay, so off across the grassy lawn I headed, towards the trail when-BOOM! -down I went. Again. Flat on my back. But not without exerting great force on the same elbow and shoulder previously strained, and now my whole arm was in tremendous pain. I may have lost nearly 60 pounds, but falling from a lofty 6’4″ (with blades) generates powerful downward energy!
My sweet man came to my side, assessing the damage. “This is not worth it,” he said, shaking his head. “This simply is not worth it.” As I tried to grasp this rather profound and disturbing sentiment, I had to agree; it is not worth it. I still have a bunch of kids to raise, tasks to accomplish each day, things I love to do. My hands/arms/body are an important part of accomplishing these things. So with tears flowing I allowed him to remove those precious skates from my feet, help me up, and I slowly hobbled back to the van.
My bubble has burst; I must accept that perhaps a woman of 40-something should not be acting like a 20 something, learning/participating in such potentially dangerous forms of exercise. Maybe I should just stick with biking, hiking, dancercizing, sky diving; but not roller blading! (I’m just kidding; I have zero desire to sky dive. Maybe.)
Naaah! It might just be the Percoset talking, but I find myself here this morning, arm propped up so that I can type, watching YouTube videos on how to roller blade. I haven’t given up quite yet…

noun
1 the act of committing or the state of being committed; dedication; application; a pledge or undertaking; an act of pledging or setting aside something
2. an engagement or obligation that resricts freedom of action
There you have it: the definition of “commitment”. Now let’s compare this with how people today commonly view the idea.
Marriage is a commitment, and a most serious one at that. When we marry we pledge our love and devotion to one person, “’til death do we part”. And yet many (even most) don’t. They forsake that promise, that commitment, and move on to a new person, a new “commitment”. Hmm.
How about commitment to a job? My job is homemaker. Am I committed to it? Indeed I am! But how about you? Is your job in an office, a factory, the cab of a truck, a store, the farm field or perhaps on the road fixing things for people? When hired we often say we are “committed to the job”, but are we? If we were really committed, wouldn’t we stay with that job for a very, very long time?

Another area where people are committed, or not, is to their health. Often we hear someone say, “I tried that and it didn’t work”. Recently someone told me this in relation to a particular health problem; they had “tried” herbs, and “they” didn’t work. In this person’s mind they were committed to changing their state of ill health by “going natural” and “it” didn’t work. But were they really committed, or did they just think they were?
Still more often I hear people say, in relation to the need to lose weight, “I tried every diet out there”. So they give up and either keep on getting fatter or they go the very risky, un-natural surgical route-because they have “tried everything”.
So what or whom failed in these commitments? Is the state of marriage faulty by nature? Are our jobs the cause of failure? Is the problem our spouse, the herbs God gave us, the diet or exercise plans we are “committed” to follow?
I submit to you that in any area where “commitment” is involved the problem is usually not with the “it” involved, but with us. When you try something, are you really committed to it? Really? I submit to you that when we try, we fail. It is only when we do, rather than try, that we succeed. Not necessarily with the initial effort, but as we continue to work, to do, success will follow. This is real commitment!

So as we ponder all those diets that we have tried (and usually failed), there are two things I want for you to think about. One is that just about any diet will work, at least temporarily, if we are truly committed to it. I lost weight with 2 different low-fat diet plans, for example. The problem was, I could not continue to follow through because they left me starving for more, which brings me to my main point. I could have remained committed to those plans, forcing myself to deprive my body of the nutrients it needed. But is that really wise?
Folks, I would propose that we choose a more healthy approach to our health and to weight loss. We are jaded by the failure of all those calorie or point counting, fat and nutrient deprived diets out there. Let’s face reality-diets don’t work! But real nutrition does.
So instead of being “committed” to “trying” this diet, that herb or supplement, or another gimmick, why not be truly committed to improving your health and losing weight through sound dietary principles such as those espoused by the Liberation Wellness program and the Weston A Price Foundation? These are the principles that truly work; but one must first be committed, not just “try”. I have personally lost nearly 60 pounds and overcome long standing thyroid and adrenal problems by adopting these principles. You can too if you’ll just do, rather than try. Be committed!
