My Apology and the Truth

Posted by Annette Presley on February 12, 2011

I apologize to everyone who has struggled with their weight. I spent fourteen years blaming you for being lazy and gluttonous and then I gave you advice that just made you heavier and more miserable and then I blamed you again when my advice didn’t work. I’m truly sorry for believing the lies myself and then passing them on to you. Now that I know better, I want to set the record straight about some things and liberate you from false beliefs.

1.   Overweight and obese people are not lazy gluttons. Eating too much and exercising too little does not cause obesity, they are side effects of gaining weight. The more weight you carry, the more fuel you need to feed it and the less inclined you are to exercise because of the need to fuel the excess weight. The good news is that you are not eating too much and exercising too little.

2. Genetics does play a role in weight, so you do not have 100% control over it. Your genes determine where you accumulate fat and how thin it is possible for you to be. Not everyone can achieve a size 2 and not everyone can get to a size 16. Naturally, we all want the genes that prevent us from getting fat, but the bad news is that genes are not fair. Some of us have genes that keep us from getting fat and some of us have genes that make it super easy for us to get fat. For some, trying to achieve the supermodel look will only lead to failure, depression and more weight gain. For women, some will have nice voluptuous breasts and others will have not so nice voluptuous hips or bellies. That’s life, it’s not always fair.

3.  The diet advice from the ‘nutrition authorities’ over the past 25 plus years has contributed to expanding waistlines in both children and adults. The low fat, food guide pyramid diet has also contributed to heart disease, diabetes, metabolic syndrome and cancer. The bad news is that you’ve been lied to all your life about how to maintain a reasonable weight and following the bad advice has made it easy for you to gain weight and difficult for you to lose weight.

4.   Diet plays a significant role in weight management. The good news is that there is something you can do to improve your weight, but it involves a complete change in the way you think about weight, food and activity. It’s obvious from both science and observation that the low fat, high carbohydrate diet (food guide pyramid) has led to obesity, so it makes sense, and science confirms it, that doing the opposite might reverse the damage. If you want to know more about the science, I highly recommend the book Why We Get Fat and What To Do About It by Gary Taubes. Taubes does an excellent job at presenting the science in a very clear, understandable and straightforward way. Carbohydrates drive insulin and insulin is the only hormone in the body that causes you to store fat. There are also other hormones and enzymes that play a role in weight management, too, so if you struggle with weight, it would be a good idea to have your hormone levels checked as well as your thyroid. Getting those things under control will help you lose weight. Cutting down on the carbohydrates, particularly starchy vegetables such as potatoes, peas and corn, grains and sugars will reduce insulin levels and therefore reduce the amount of fat stored in your body.

5. Exercise will not help you lose weight. The good news is you don’t have to bust your butt at the gym anymore. Exercise does have other benefits so don’t sit on the couch all day, but it will not help with weight loss. Too much exercise, in fact, can make it harder for you to lose weight because it increases appetite, particularly for carbohydrate rich foods; you will just end up eating more and storing more fat.

The only way to lose weight and keep it off is to reduce the amount of carbohydrates you eat such as starchy vegetables, grains and sugars. You can eat as much protein and fat as you want which may sound too good to be true, but it is. Next time I’ll give you some steps to take on making the switch from high carb to low carb.

There is hope, so stop beating yourself up and don’t take a beating from anyone else, either.

How I Lose Weight, or Not

Posted by Maureen Diaz on January 7, 2011

Mixing up the Thanksgiving Stuffing-*not* something helpful for me to eat!

Lately this is something which I have been contemplating a lot, as back in November and early December I very rapidly gained ten pounds-Ugh! As I squeezed into what had just a few weeks prior been an appealing dress, it occurred to me that I had better step back and take a look at what I was doing to cause this dramatic-and scary!-set back. Why, oh why, is it so easy to gain weight, but so hard to lose or keep it off?! There are several things which I identified as problems and needed to change.

First, way back in August I had a mishap which made it impossible to follow my preferred methods of exercise. In fact, for quite some time it was very difficult to perform any significant type of physical exertion, as it was simply far too painful and detrimental to healing! Because of the level of physical activity prior to this, my body had reset to a fairly high metabolism which I was able to sustain for a period of time. But after awhile everything slowed down again. By mid November nearly 3 months had passed, I was still having a great deal of trouble with my shoulder, and returning to running and dancing was still out of the question as the bouncing and jolting was simply too much. But I still needed to do something, as gaining more weight was not an option!

Another thing that had changed was my eating habits, to some extent anyway. I no longer strictly quit eating in the afternoon, but would often have a meal in the early evening. Experience had taught me that this was never a good thing!

Bread making was going on full blast about the middle of November as I prepared for the Weston A Price conference, for which I was providing sourdough bread cubes for stuffing. While I did not eat much bread, I did eat more than I had become accustomed to, which certainly upped my carbohydrate intake. The body loves to store those carbs as fat, and that seems to be just what happened-especially with the lack of good, physical exertion! I believe gluten is also a factor in my hypothyroidism, and so this was likely another contributing factor.

In addition to these things, I had often been enjoying a glass of wine or ale in the evening. While I never over-indulge and am against drunkenness-period!, I do not believe that enjoying a glass with dinner or at home while relaxing is wrong; it can even be good for you. But due to the high carb content of these beverages they are not our friend when we have a weight problem and as such need to be  limited.

One other “little” thing: I was drinking coffee fairly often again, something I had given up quite some time ago. My preference is for strong, dark coffee with heavy cream and Sucanat. The sugar certainly gave me a carb-start to the day, and the caffein is hard on the adrenal glands, suppressing the thyroid (along with the gluten in that bread), and here we go again…

The dark chocolate truffles which my children were making as gifts didn’t always make it into the gift boxes either :)

So here I am now, early January, 4 1/2 months after my little accident and still with a very painful shoulder, but determined to turn things back around. And I am! Recently I was able to start exercising again, albeit carefully. I can again run and perform my dancercize routine, and have added some abdominal and gluteous maximus exercises. Tea, much lower in caffein and acid, is again my beverage of choice and coffee is relegated to the occasional treat (with xylitol instead of Sucanat). I am not having the wine or ale (it can wait for a “treat”, once in awhile). While bread making is something I find very enjoyable, I feel no need to eat it. Coconut oil is again added daily as a supplement. And late night eating? A thing of the past!

And so the new year begins, and a “new” me! The pounds are not coming off as quickly as I would like, but they are coming off again! By this time next month I expect to be to a new low and even nearer to my goal.

Having problems losing the weight you need to lose? Perhaps you can benefit from my experience and join me in this most beneficial of endeavors: to arrive at the weight that is best for you and in the process look good, feel great, and have fun in the process!

New Year’s Resolutions

Posted by Annette Presley on December 28, 2010

Here we go again; another year of making resolutions that we never stick to.  Most of us want to be healthy.  We want to look good in our clothes and we want to have energy and stamina to live a full and abundant life.  But, our new year’s resolutions just aren’t working for us.  This year, instead of trying the same thing we tried for years, let’s do something different; something that might actually work.  Here are some tips to making some great New Year’s resolutions that will stick and get results.

1.       When making a goal, use the words “I choose to” instead of “I will.”  We are more likely to do something that we choose to do.

2.       Make goals specific.  Instead of “I want to lose weight” say “I choose to lose 10 lbs.”  Define what it is you actually want.

3.       A goal should be measurable so you know if you are on track or not and they need to have a timeframe so you know when you arrive.  For example, “I choose to lose 10 lbs by March 5, 2010” can be measured on a weekly basis to see if you are on target and it has a timeframe so you don’t spend the whole year trying to achieve the goal.

4.       Goals need to be realistic and achievable.  An example of an unrealistic goal is “I choose to lose 10 lbs by Jan. 2, 2010 (when you start on Jan 1st).  Give yourself enough time to complete the goal.  If you are a 6’ tall, 300 lb man, an unachievable goal would be “I choose to weigh 120 lbs by June 1, 2010.”  No 6’ tall man is going to get down to 120 lbs and it would be unhealthy to do so.  If you are going to make a weight loss goal, give yourself a week to lose 1 to 2 lbs.  To lose 10 lbs, you would need at least 5 to 10 weeks to complete that goal. If you lose more than 2 pounds a week, then rejoice. It’s better to lose more than you think you will, then less than you are trying for.

5.       Give yourself a reward for completing a goal.  Don’t reward with food, though.  Get a new bike or outfit or treat yourself to a spa or a day off.

6.       Make mini goals where you can experience success within a 1 to 3 month period.  If you need to lose 100 lbs, don’t write a goal to lose 100 lbs.  Break that 100 lbs into 10 lb increments and reward yourself after every 10 lbs lost.

7.       Make healthy habit goals instead of weight loss goals.  If you’ve tried the weight loss goals and they haven’t worked, try something different that will get the results you want.  For example, let’s say you drink 6 soda’s a day.  A great goal would be, “I choose to be drinking only 1 soda by March 1, 2010.”  The steps you take to achieve that goal would be to drink 6 sodas a day the first week, 5 sodas daily the 2nd week, 4 soda’s a day the 3rd week and so on until you are down to 1 soda a day.  You can also make goals to rid your kitchen of processed foods, eat 2 to 3 meals a day instead of snacking, adding exercise to your schedule or whatever habits you need to develop to be healthy.

8.       If you finish your goal before the due date, pat yourself on the back, enjoy your reward and write a new goal.

9.       If you don’t make your goal by the due date, re-evaluate.  Was your goal realistic?  Did you eat the right foods?  You may need to make a healthy habit goal instead of a weight loss goal. Did you have any success, such as any pounds lost or good habits formed?  Pat yourself on the back for any success, no matter how small, and write a new goal incorporating what you discovered in your evaluation.  Do not focus on not making the goal.  Focus on all the positive changes you are making.

10.   If you find you are not losing weight even though your goals are realistic and you are eating the right foods and doing the right amount of exercise, get your thyroid, adrenals and hormones checked.  You may need to take iodine or other supplements to get your organs healthy again. Allergies can prevent weight loss as well. You may need to avoid grains and pasteurized milk products.

If you follow the 10 steps above, you will be successful this year with your resolutions.  Happy New Year!

Liberation Wellness Maureen Diaz Wins Award

Posted by Kevin Brown on November 22, 2010

Weston Price Foundation 2010 Activist Award Winners

There is a lump in my throat as I write this because I am so excited to share the news…

This year at the Wise Traditions Conference Awards dinner, Sally presented three very deserving women with the Weston Price Activism award for their efforts in spreading the message of Weston A. Price

Two of them include my friend, Sarah, who is also a fellow Real Food Media blogger, and the super-sweet Maureen Diaz who I enjoyed getting to know more this weekend.  Congratulations girls and thank you for all you do!

I hope those two don’t mind, though, that I want to share why I was especially thrilled about the next winner:

Ann Marie Michaels!

Ann Marie and I have been through a lot together and I’m thankful for our friendship.  She is a smart blogger, internet marketer and businesswoman who has helped me grow and build a successful blog, and I am only one of many whom she has helped in similar ways.  I was with her in late 2008 at the

Diedre Currie Festival when she began Real Food Media (I’m proud to have been the first RFM blogger!), and I’ve been with her through many of the learning bumps in the road that any new company goes through.  I’ve seen firsthand the time and commitment she has put into RFM and her Cheeseslave blog, and I also know firsthand how passionate and deeply committed she is to getting the truth out about the wisdom of the Weston Price Foundation principles.  What’s neat about this is that it all leads back to one thing:  she loves helping others be well and doesn’t settle for doing anything small.  I’m thrilled that she has been recognized in this way.  Congratulations, Ann Marie, and THANK YOU for your leadership, your encouraging and giving attitude, and especially for your friendship!

Liberation Wellness: Breaking all the diet rules to lose weight for good

Posted by Kevin Brown on November 4, 2010

Liberation Diet

Everyone knows that to lose weight, you have to cut out meat, butter and eggs and trade in your whole milk for skim.  Right?  Wrong, says Kevin Brown, certified fitness trainer, nutritionist and developer of the Liberation Wellness program.

According to Brown, America is sick, fat, confused, and in the midst of a national “health catastrophe.”  There is an epidemic of chronic disease driven by the fact that 72% of Americans are obese or overweight.  Is it because we are lazy and slackers?  No, says Brown, we are simply, horribly misinformed.

After receiving his nutrition training, Brown started working with clients in late 1990’s but found that the nutrition protocols he had been taught weren’t working and his clients were not getting the promised results.  He concluded that what he had learned about nutrition was simply wrong, and he started using the opposite of what he had been taught.  Within a year or two he was getting spectacular results with his clients.

Based in Palmyra N.J., Brown became famous for his success with clients and was named a fellow on the prestigious National Board of Fitness Examiners, helping to set the standard for all personal trainers.  Through Visionary Trainers, Inc., he has established a network of 50 personal trainers who visit clients at home or in their offices from New York to Washington, D.C.

A popular speaker, he has addressed cardiologists at Holy Redeemer Hospital and is scheduled for a return engagement at the Naval Academy in Annapolis.  On Saturday, November 13, Brown will be addressing the Wise Traditions Conference of the Weston A. Price Foundation in King of Prussia.  His talk promises to be one of the most widely attended and will disclose his eye-opening description of just how we have been misinformed on nutrition for the past 100 years.

The more Brown studied nutrition and saw his clients’ results, the more convinced he became that not only was the nutrition information given to the public wrong, it was “wrong on purpose.”

Brown believes that misinformation about what to eat, how to eat and how to exercise is intentional and is being used to hold us in bondage to the big food manufacturers.  He named his program “Liberation Wellness” because he strives to free his clients from false information and the constant struggle to lose weight, and to empower them to have excellent health and normal weight for life.

He speaks of consumers as victims of chemical warfare waged by the processed food industry.  The industry has been able to achieve a kind of mind control, observes Brown, making people fearful of eating something like butter, which is actually good for them, while at the same time making them dependent on processed or engineered fake foods.

Getting clients to understand that the goal of the food manufacturers is to make bad food sound good is a first step.  Once he opens someone’s mind to the misinformation and especially how long it’s been going on, they are more willing to make changes in their lives.  Brown likes to think of his first meeting with a client as a “cult deprogramming session.”  He warns them that what they are about to hear will shock them.  But once they get it, he says, they are free for life.

The Same Old Pink Ribbon Campaign

Posted by Annette Presley on October 29, 2010

October is National Breast Cancer Month and people are sporting cute pins, buttons and bracelets encouraging everyone to ‘support ta tas’ and ‘feel your boobies.’  Food companies are donating portions of their proceeds to support breast cancer research, and women are being reminded to get their yearly mammogram and eat lots of fruits and vegetables.  We get the same info year after year. One would think that some of those research dollars would have uncovered something new by now. There is overwhelming evidence supporting iodine deficiency as a cause of breast cancer, but we never hear anything about that in the pink ribbon campaign.

Iodine is a very important mineral that is stored in the thyroid gland, ovaries and breasts.  Breast cancer has several etiologies but one of them is iodine deficiency coupled with bromide/flouride toxicity.  Bromide, fluoride and chlorine, found in swimming pools, our water supply and the artificial sweetener Splenda, all compete with iodine for absorption.  Flouride is also in the water supply and in foods prepared with fluoridated water, toothpaste and medications such as the antidepressants Paxil and Prozac.  Flonase and Flovent also contain fluoride.  Bromide is found in such things as furniture, carpet, cars, fire retardant clothing and mattresses, asthma medications and flour and bread products.

Iodine is important for thyroid and breast health and a connection between hypothyroidism and breast cancer was first reported in 1896.  Iodine deficiency can cause estrogen production to increase and when you add increased estrogen production to the increase in exposure to environmental estrogens in plastic, pesticides, meat and dairy foods, you have a ripe environment for the development of breast cancer.  On top of that, we are bombarded with bromide and fluoride on a daily basis which further deplete iodine.

One of the best steps to take in preventing cancer is to get an iodine loading test and discuss the results with a knowledgeable physician who can prescribe the right dose of iodine for you.  You want to get plenty of unrefined sea salt in the diet as the chloride component of salt helps to rid the body of bromide.  Vitamin C, magnesium and selenium need to be taken along with iodine, so again, it’s best to consult a knowledgeable physician.

For more information on iodine and breast health, go to http://www.drbrownstein.com, http://www.breastcancerchoices.org and http://www.hakalalabs.com.

Liberation Wellness to appear at John Hopkins University

Liz Reitzig, Liberation Wellness Certified Nutritionist to speak at the prestigious John Hopkins University.
How are immigration, highway safety, and health care related? Critics of NAFTA claim that migrant labor is brought over the border in unsafe vehicles to harvest crops. The increasing number of illegal immigrants and the industrialization of food production have become major health care reform issues. What other problems have captured the pulse of the electorate?

Raw milk on trial

Posted by Kevin Brown on October 14, 2010

Former Home on the Range dairy manager Alice Jongerden is in court today to face contempt charges related to the distribution of raw milk.

For background on her fight with Fraser Health, click here, and check out Fraser Valley columnist Brian Lewis’s story for the most recent dairy news.

It turns out Home on the Range has again found a loophole to continue milking its 20 dairy cows (with shareholders receiving the raw milk) by hiring Ontario farmer to manage the dairy. He’s the guy who beat 19 charges related to raw milk in Ontario last year. It will be interesting to see how Fraser Health responds to this development, and what it means for Jongerden’s contempt charge. Wanna hear the rest?
