Organic Produce? . . . Local Produce? . . . Does It Matter?

Posted by Debbie Wysocki on July 18, 2010

Are Organics Worth Their Price?

That would depend . . .

The recession is lingering. . . . and for city dwellers in areas where agriculture is not big, this question can be important for a family’s budget.

While many families have sought out food co-ops and local farmers who aren’t certified organic but certainly are (they don’t use synthetic
pesticides, petroleum-based fertilizers, or sewer sludge), the chickens run free on grass, other families are making the hard choice on whether to spend their money on organic produce.

IS ORGANIC really important?

I recently came across an article in O Magazine — by author Nina Planck did a great job sharing her insights and research.

Our family is a ‘city’ family with a Whole Foods nearby a small market that provides local produce, meats, and dairy, and then
the BIG Super Market — Publix who has its allotted 6 feet of Organic produce 2 feet in the Meat section and so on.

To summarize Nina’s article, there were a whole bunch of European studies.  The bottom line is that we now know that organic produce that is free of synthetic nitrogen fertilizer has:

1.  A stronger immune system.  The nitrogen produces a watery,
sugary cell sap that compromises the plant’s health (imagine that).*
A healthy plant, makes a healthier meal, and tastier.

2.  Higher levels of beneficial antioxidants, including vitamin C
which helps prevent aging)

3.  More polyunsaturated fatty acids (according to the French)

4.  More nutrients according a 5-year study by 33 universities in
the United Kingdom

Maybe this will help you and your family — it’s what the guidelines we use:

These are the fruits and vegetables known to be MOST CONTAMINATED with  herbicides and pesticides

1.  Peaches
2.  Apples
3.  Bell Peppers
4.  Celery
5.  Nectarines
6.  Strawberries
7.  Cherries
8.  Lettuce
9.  Grapes
10. Pears
11. Spinach
12. Potatoes
13. Raspberries
14. Blueberries
15. Kale

My first weekly stop is our local market for any produce, meat, and dairy need.  Note that I pretty much put ALL berries on the buy LOCAL or ORGANIC list.  IF there is anything on my list that they didn’t have that our family really wants, we’ll go on to Whole Foods.  Then for our paper goods and household staples, it’s either the warehouse store or Publix.

Whole Foods brings in a lot of foods from South America — I never buy anything from South America even if it says ‘organic’ from South America because frankly I just don’t believe they monitor the farming practices – but this is just me.

Here’s the list of produce that is LEAST contaminated with herbicides and pesticides

1.  Sweet Corn
2.  Avocados
3.  Pineapples
4.  Cauliflower
5.  Sweet Peas
6.  Broccoli
7.  Onions
8.  Asparagus
9.  Bananas
10. Kiwi
11. Mangoes
12. Papaya
13. Eggplant
14. Cabbage
15. Watermelon
16. Tomato
17. Sweet Potato

Going Organic for many families is a lifestyle change — becoming healthier in all areas.  That’s how it was for us.  We are about 70% organic in our food — it’s all the kids knew until they went to school — and then they got introduced to world of their friends lunch boxes.  As for our cleaning, we are close to 95% green.  Of course, there is always room for improvement!

Why are farmers going organic?  One, the demand is huge.  Two, the money.  For some farmers it’s about raising healthier plants and raising soil fertility — which of course gives better plants!  Let’s hope more farmers choose to go down the organic path — more farmers means more choices and hopefully lower prices for us!
*There was a mention in Planck’s article that when a plant becomes dependent upon synthetic pesticides, it can no longer fend of pests naturally.  Kinda like when people become dependent on pharmaceuticals . . .

Silver Diner Gets a Little FRESHer

Posted by Liz Reitzig on July 7, 2010

Mmmmm…Local Beef Burger from Silver Diner

Ok, I admit it.  Eating at a diner kind of makes me feel like a kid again.  It brings out the Peter Pan in me—I won’t grow up!  But, with four children of my own now, it gets more difficult to justify doing things just for fun.  Sitting in one of those diner booths with the retro pictures and the cute jukebox at each table actually begs one to get a burger and shake.  But I can’t do that now that I’m grown up and “responsible,” can I?  I make huge efforts to feed my kids organic and local foods.  I buy grass-fed beef and dairy.  I shop at farmers markets and I know most of the farms where our food comes from.

So imagine my delight to find out that I could have my shake and drink it too. I realize that being “responsible” is about being open and responsive to the circumstances and opportunities that life presents without always being rigid and following a set of rules.  There is one diner where I can have fun with my kids without compromising my food philosophy: Silver Diner.  They source their foods locally and even invite farmers to sell, market style, at their restaurants.  And to add icing to the cake, Silver Diner is now partnering with the producer of the movie FRESH—an inspiring window into the local foods move

Silver Diner has made a big splash recently with their new menus featuring “fresh and local” ingredients. It is a treat to find a restaurant or chef, who is truly committed to the entirety of the “local” message.  In addition to their commitment to “Fresh and local”, they are equally committed to helping children understand about food choices and where their food comes from.  Each diner has a TV screen in the lobbies.  These screens show clips from various music videos.  A few days ago I took 6 children (my four and a friend’s two) to one of the Diners and a music video on the screen captivated their attention while we waited for our table.  These screens are now also showing idyllic clips from the movie FRESH.  Young visitors to the diner, many of whom have never been on a farm, will see scenes from local farms.  These short scenes have the potential to convey the greater ramifications of food choices.

Featuring super heroes Joel Salatin and Will Allen

This inspiring film highlights what we can each do to increase access to fresh and local foods. FRESH graphically illustrates the contrast between the industrial food system and the “fresh” food system.  The film engages people about where their food comes from as it takes the viewer on a journey to several local farms that produce food for their communities.

Showing the movie trailer at Silver Diner has the potential to captivate a whole new audience as it motivates these customers to bring the movie to their communities. The film’s creators designed the film as a community educational tool.  Across the country individuals arrange screenings of the movie in their own communities (living rooms, churches, school, etc.) to significant response.  These screening events engage consumers where they are and inspire them to propel the fresh food system further forward.  With super heroes Will Allen—urban farmer extraordinaire—and Joel Salatin of Polyface farms, scenes from this movie are the perfect accompaniment to a fresh and local meal, and an amazing inspiration for all our budding super heroes.  It’s going to take all of us to encourage the rest of the restaurants to use fresh and local foods and educating those around us—especially our young ones—with tools such as this movie is a first step to transforming our food industry in such a way.

At Silver Diner, “FRESH” is not just a movie, it is a philosophy—a philosophy that is taken seriously because they realize their responsibility to their customers and to the producers of the food. Behind the scenes of FRESH, it is not just a movie, it is an inspiring invitation to a refreshing way of eating.  The partnership between Silver Diner and FRESH brings the message of “fresh and local” full circle so that children—and adults who wish they were still kids—can add depth to their diner experience.  Because they have chosen this direction for their diner, I can now responsibly enjoy my burger and shake with my children as we all sing along to “Puff the Magic Dragon.”  And unlike little Jackie Paper, who does grow up, today, I’m still a kid.

Action Items: What you can do to support Silver Diner in doing what they’ve started…

1. Dine at Silver Diner and let them know that you support their new practices
2. Let your waiter / cashier know how you feel about them showing FRESH
3. Bring FRESH to your community….

Have you seen FRESH? Please share your experience below.

Market Restaurants: The Journey Continues for Silver Diner

Posted by Liz Reitzig on June 13, 2010

Ype with two farmers at the first Silver Diner market–Clarendon Diner June 12 2010

1948, Baldwin Park, CA—the small restaurant In-n-Out Burger changed the restaurant industry forever.  At the time, drive-in restaurants with bellhops were quite common; customers would drive in to the stands, place orders to the waiters who came out to their cars and then be on their merry way with food in hand.  But Harry and Esther Snyder, co-owners of this small restaurant, changed this by introducing a two-way speaker, creating the drive-thru and unintentionally lending to the distancing of Americans from the source of their food.  Now, 62 years later, Silver Diner, a small, local, privately owned restaurant chain is poised to propel the entire restaurant industry in a nourishing, refreshing direction by reintroducing Americans to those who grow their food.

Cities, towns and rural areas across America have seen the growth in popularity of farmers markets.

People are eager to support their local farmers, are motivated to buy local produce, meats, eggs and dairy, and many individuals seek restaurants that source from local farms.  Restaurants have noticed this trend and some make a modest effort to find local products, while a few have even gone to considerable effort, but most still do not.  For the DC area chain of 18 Silver Diners, they are taking seriously the mantra “support your local farmer.”

The Diner’s efforts to source from regional small family farms are nothing short of heroic.  Silver Diner has wholeheartedly embraced locally sourced foods; their menus are filled with year-round local meats, eggs and dairy and seasonal produce from local farms.  Now, they are taking an additional step by introducing and leading the charge for restaurant-markets by inviting farmers to set up stands and sell produce in the diner parking lots. The restaurant will buy from these farmers, as well as offer their customers the opportunity to do the same, thus expanding the potential customer base for these farmers while promoting fresh and local nutrient dense foods.

Imagine taking the family out for breakfast on Saturday morning.

It’s blueberry season right now so you have a delicious breakfast of pancakes (made from unbleached flour) smothered in butter from a local dairy farm and topped with a plethora of local blueberries.  In fact, the farmer that grew those blueberries is sitting just outside the restaurant.  After this fantastic meal, you exit the restaurant and pick up a pint of blueberries from the same farmer who grew the blueberries that topped your pancakes.  And, while you’re there, you buy some fresh salad greens, spinach, green onions, some cucumbers and maybe some early tomatoes for a nice dinner salad for your guests that evening.  This is the beginning of the market-restaurant.

I am fascinated and inspired by this new concept!

Silver Diner has the potential to change, for the better, the face of the restaurant industry and transform the American countryside while creating prosperous family farms.  As head chef Ype Von Hengst states, they feel it is their “moral obligation” to do what they can to help make healthy foods available to their customer base.  What better way to do this than to invite the farmers to set up at their restaurants, source directly form those farmers, and introduce the farmers to a new customer base?  Fascinating.  As other restaurants witness the implementation of Silver Diner’s vision, and as the consumer demand grows, the market-restaurant concept has huge potential to grow and alter our dining out experience.

I realized several years ago the multi-faceted benefits of eating local foods from small farms that practice good stewardship of the land: helping the environment and improving the economy while providing healthy food for people.  Simply put, buying nutrient dense foods from local farmers brings good nutrients to our own tables, keeps small family farms in production (rather than turning into a housing or mall development), and pumps money back into rural America by paying the salary of hard working American farmers who then generate prosperity in their communities and beyond.  When we support small scale, local farmers, we transform the way we experience food while contributing to a grassroots revitalization of rural America.

It is inspiring to witness an unpretentious restaurant make the effort to transform the way we think about our food and the relationship we have with the farmers who produce our food.  Unlike the disengaged drive thru, eating at the Silver Diner gives their customers the opportunity to intimately experience their food and meet the farmers who grow it.  It is clearly a vision, with intense passion behind it, for the owners of Silver Diner.

The #1 Question People Are Asking . . . How Do I Make More $

Posted by Debbie Wysocki on June 13, 2010

More than 16 Million People Have Chosen to Start a Direct

Sales/MLM Business in the US

Who Exactly is Making the Decision To Get Started?

It’s Not Who You Might Think . . .

If you are not already in the industry, these numbers may surprise you.  If you are, I can almost guarantee you’ll be surprised.  And different reasons for both.

Three weeks ago I began gathering research for a presentation I was preparing for the following week.  This topic is important because after all, we want to spend our time recruiting the people who are looking for us, not to mention, we want to place our advertising dollars in the venues where the most prospects will be!
Having recently attended the Direct Selling Women’s Alliance (DSWA) Annual Celebration in Los Angeles, I had the pleasure of sitting down with Nicki Keohohou, the CEO and chatting about some of the changes that have taken place in the last 12 to 24 months in our industry.  This event, in my opinion, is right up there with your company’s convention if you are serious about building a profitable business.  The content is excellent and the value high.

One of the segments was on diversity relating to the direct sales industry — the statistics were so staggering, I couldn’t write fast enough, so I vowed when I got home I would do more research and present this information to our local Meet Up Group (www.HowToSucceedInMLMToday.com) which is 90+ members strong from 30+ different companies in South Florida.

Why?

Because we are in a NEW ECONOMY.

Whether you have a job you love, own a business you are passionate about, have been newly downsized or are recently retired, most people today recognize multiple streams of income are necessary and having a ‘Plan B’ is mandatory.
With 14.8 million people — nearly 10% (9.7%) of the American population jobless in February 2010, we’ve all been impacted in different ways.  And these numbers don’t include the ‘under’ employed — those people who have taken a job beneath their skill level just to put food on the table.

The direct sales/network marketing industry is seeing a significant increase in recruiting because people do not want to be dependent upon Corporate America.  In 2008 (latest year for figures), the US reported more that 16 million direct sellers and $30 BILLION in direct sales.  And, it’s not just in the US — global numbers are 62 million people and $114 Billion in sales.

The statistics above are fairly easy to come by — but getting to the bottom of WHO exactly is joining our business TODAY was shall we say a bit more challenging.  I would compare it to breaking into Fort Knox . . .

After almost many phone calls, numerous emails, called in favors, I was finally able to get the most up-to-date numbers our our industry has, most of which come straight from the Direct Selling Association (DSA).  We do share some generic demographic numbers from a variety of resources including Miriam Muley, CEO of The 85% Niche, LLC http://www.85percentniche.com and the DSWA
Diversity Center.

Here are some key numbers that are important:

83% of ALL purchases made are influenced by a woman.
85% of all people joining the direct selling/network marketing profession are women.
The fastest growing segment in direct sales is women 60 +.
13% of people choosing the industry are Hispanic females between 18 and 45.
Nine out of ten NEW females in the last decade were Black, Hispanic, or Asian.

WHY are these numbers important?

If you have thought about this industry but were unsure of its legitimacy, the sheer numbers should tell you timing is everything.

If you are in the business, the demographics are important because you want to be where your prospective business partners are.

What I can share with you after building two large organizations numbering more than 15,000 people in 7 different countries is exactly what Dr. John Maxwell talks about in his newest book, Everyone Communicates, Few Connect: What the Most Effective People Do Differently.

People want to know the answers to these questions:

1.  Do you care for me?
2.  Can you help me?
3.  Can I trust you?

When you effectively answer these questions and communicate that you truly care for the person and the relationship, you will build a dynasty and create lifestyle freedom.  Building a successful network marketing business does not happen overnight…It’s about relationships and being a person of integrity.

Can Strawberries Cause CANCER?

Posted by Kevin Brown on June 4, 2010

Strawberries are supposed to be delicious summertime treats; they shouldn’t cause cancer.

Methyl iodide, approved for use as a pesticide by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in 2007, is dangerously close to being approved as a soil fumigant for strawberry crops in California and spreading as a widely-used pesticide for crops around the country. The best way to make sure we stop the use of methyl iodide on our food supply is to get straight to the problem: the EPA’s decision to approve the chemical in the first place.

Click here to sign our petition: tell the EPA to ban methyl iodide from our food.

http://action.freshthemovie.com/p/dia/action/public/?action_KEY=3268

Methyl iodide causes cancer.  It is a known neurotoxin and thyroid disruptor and has also been proven to cause spontaneous abortions in late-term pregnancies. Methyl iodide is even used to intentionally induce cancer cells in lab settings. And yet, the EPA has decided that methyl iodide is fit for our food, for our communities and for our bodies.

The time has come to raise our collective voice in strong opposition to the use of methyl iodide as a pesticide on our food. Please join us in our effort to stop this pesticide from reaching our food.

Click here to sign our petition: tell the EPA to ban methyl iodide from our food.

http://action.freshthemovie.com/p/dia/action/public/?action_KEY=3268

We’re joining in this petition campaign with our friends at CREDO Action, a group of progressive activists who recently organized more than 26,000 people to oppose California’s effort to approve methyl iodide. The EPA can reverse its decision on methol iodide at any point. Now is the time to make sure they do so.

We have until the end of June to tell the EPA how we feel about this toxic chemical. We will deliver your comments to the EPA in collaboration with CREDO Action and the Pesticide Action Network North America.

Please add your signature today.

http://action.freshthemovie.com/p/dia/action/public/?action_KEY=3268

Let’s make sure the EPA hears our momentous outcry. This is a truly horrific toxin that we must keep out of our already battered food system. Please share this widely, with those who you care about.

Eat safe,

Proven Tools and Techniques to Create Positive Change and Thinking

Posted by Paul Ericson on April 30, 2010

More research seems to come out everyday showing a link between the health of your gut and your mental health. We know this is true because so many people report improved mood and cognitive function when they start eating real food. So one of the best things you can do for your mind and mood is eating real food.

Quite time is also critical. I don’t have a radio in my vehicle and some of my best ideas have come to me while driving long distances. How many times have you had a good idea in the shower. The morning shower is quite time to think. You should try to make more moments like this everyday.

Take your least favorite TV show and skip it, this could easily free up an hour a day to do something else which is far better for your mind.

Sleep is another critical part of thinking as sleep allows the brain to rest and restore itself. So make sure you are getting as much sleep as you need. You will find that eating real food gives you more energy so you will need less sleep.

The best thing you can do is find 20 minutes everyday to do something that lets you focus your mind. Prayer, meditation or even a walk around the block are all things that allow the mind to focus.

Meditation is very easy to practice, but very difficult to master. Simply find a quite spot where you can sit alone. Close your eyes and try to focus on just one thing. A sound, an image, a word, it really doesn’t matter. You will find this easy at first, but you will also find that your mind starts to wonder. This is normal, simply go back to your focus as soon as you can. You will find that over time, your ability to remain on your focal point will improve and the wandering will subside. After a few weeks of daily practice you should notice a significant difference in your thinking.
Please let me know what you think about this.

Get Real, Stay Real!

Posted by Maureen Diaz on April 30, 2010

Michael Schmidt, a Real Farmer Hero!

Real Food for Real People!

I like real food; it is what I want my family to eat, every day.  And it is my mission to educate anyone who will listen  as to the benefits of eating real food, for our health and our enjoyment (real food just tastes better!). But another reason to eat real food is that it comes from real farms; something which our modern, processed “food” does not.  By eating real food we are supporting our friends, the small family farmers of our community.  Doing otherwise only supports Fake Food corporations, as well as the medical and  pharmaceutical industries!

But our right to purchase real food from real farms is in real peril.  (Yes, I know; the word “real” is becoming rather redundant.  Bear with me please.)  With our governments on both the federal and state levels conducting farm raids, imposing huge fines for non-compliance, threatening imprisonment to those who won’t be intimidated, and enacting laws which threaten the very existence of small family farms, we must get real about the anti-real food/small family farm bias which exists and threatens our  access to real food, and real health!

Several of the Diaz children, spending a day on The Hill lobbying their lawmakers!

I know what you’re thinking: somebody else will do it.  Not me, I’m too busy.  Let those zealous activist-types do it for me.  I’ve got soccer, work, school, church, clubs, dishes, laundry, and meals to prepare (I’m giving you the benefit of the doubt on that one!).  How am I to have the time to write letters or make a phone call?

It is this apathy and lack of participation in our democracy (?) that has brought us to our current state, a state of government control and denial of basic rights!  Are you a guilty party in this takeover?

Now folks, I understand busy; I have a  bunch of kids at home, all of whom are home schooled.  My days are filled with laundry and dishes and reading lessons and wiping tears and math papers and… Real food!  I prepare all our family’s food from scratch.  I travel miles and miles to obtain this food, to real farms, not those huge factories that some call “farms”.  But I also find the time to write the occasional letter, make a phone call now and then, and even visit with our lawmakers, and potential lawmakers.  Why do I do it? Because it must be done!  If I don’t do it, who will?

Thankfully there are a few others like me who get it, and do it!  People like Liz Reitig, Jonas & Judy Stolzfus, Kevin Brown, Jayne Lubke, Judy Mudrak, Laura Tarbott, Kimberly Hartke, Debbie Stockton, Judith McGreary, Terri Mazzei, Cathy Raymond, Hannah Smith, Sally Fallon Morell, Rhoda & Emmanuel Byler, and many others.  People who have families, responsibilities, and generally lots of other things to do. But they do it!  They are really busy, but they do these things because they understand the vital role they play in our government, and the importance of protecting our real food supply!

So how about you?  Can you carve just a few moments out of your day to write your senators and congressmen?  Make a phone call?  Meet with your local lawmakers at their offices or invite them into your home for time with like-minded friends?

I guarantee you, if more of us don’t do this, there will be no more access to real food, and thus real health!  So get real, and get busy!  You can make a difference, if only you try!
