An Unfortunately True Story
Posted by Annette Presley on March 10, 2011

Today, I learned that a good friend of mine was accused of having an eating disorder because she only drank milk one day for lunch. Kami (not her real name) eats in the school cafeteria and the meal that day was less than appetizing and she also is unfortunate to eat with a friend who is on the thin side. Based on that one meal and her thin friend, the teacher decided that twelve year old Kami was developing an eating disorder.
Kami was promptly sent to the school counselor who informed her that if she didn’t eat, her hair would fall out, her body would start eating itself and her heart would fail. The mother was called in and berated for not feeding her child properly. Despite the mother’s assurance that Kami eats well at home, the school officials stand over Kami as she eats lunch and grill her about what she eats at home.
I’ve known Kami for seven years and she does not have an eating disorder. She doesn’t even have the right personality type for an eating disorder, so even if she tried, she’d never be able to starve herself. In my opinion, these school officials have crossed the line and are trying to be the parent, though they are more like dictators than parents. They basically lied to this child and they intimidate and humiliate her every day for no justifiable reason. What I find really ironic is that they are telling Kami to eat more while serving her food with less fat and calories.
Eating disorders are on the rise and they are a problem, so I can understand the concern of the school officials, but fearing a child into eating is not going to solve the problem. Most likely, it will make the problem worse or create other problems. Body image is a huge deal, especially for 12 year old girls. Focusing their attention on what they eat, particularly when it’s done in public, can trigger an eating disorder and forcing them to eat when they are not hungry can lead to obesity.
The school system follows the food guide pyramid, low fat diet. The brain needs fat to function properly, so they are supplying a diet that can cause chemical imbalances which can lead to eating disorders. Kids are getting a mixed message; eat enough calories, but eat low calorie food. They are told not to get fat, but to make sure they eat everything on their plate. It’s insane and hypocritical.
I apologize for the rant, but it really gets my goat when kids suffer needlessly at the hands of clueless school officials trying to take on the role of parent. At some point, we need to stand up for freedom and the rights of children and parents, as well as the right to eat what we want.

Liberation Diet Author, Kevin Brown, to Lead Webinar
Posted by Kevin Brown on March 7, 2011

by Kimberly Hartke
Growing Edge Training a San Francisco company, which got its start with esoteric and new age training programs, is now offering a series on the work of the Weston A. Price Foundation and nutrition education programs.
They recently featured a webinar with WAPF Board member, Dr. Tom Cowan, author of the Fourfold Path to Healing. The Liberation Diet was required reading for his course, which led to Kevin Brown being invited to conduct the class which begins on March 29th and runs through April 26. The series of 5 live tele-seminars with Q&A, uses Kevin Brown and Annette Presley’s The Liberation Diet as a text.
The course is a good crash course in Weston A. Price dietary principles for beginners, but also good for the WAPF supporter who wants to go deeper, learn more.
“My goal is to help each participant to be an effective coach, a great communicator of these nutritional principles. For instance, once I explain how the mis-information campaign works, it is easier to teach people why butter is healthier,” says Kevin.
Kevin is offering a Nutrition Wellness Educator certificate for students who pass a test at the end of the class. Students will take an online test with 50 questions, you will have 90 days to return it.
The webinar will cost $140.00 which includes the book, plus a powerpoint and Liberation Wellness videos that the students can use to help others.
One aspect of the program is the extraordinary success Kevin has had helping people lose weight with a combination of nutrient dense foods and exercise. For some who are eating right but still overweight, Kevin’s years of experience as a personal trainer comes in handy.
“Fitness and the discipline of an exercise regime, is important to reach your desired weight,” explains Brown.
He cited some examples of his success stories: Wise Traditions Conference Planner, Misty Frank, lost 71 lbs following The Liberation Diet. WAPF volunteer Chapter Leader from Pennsylvania, Maureen Diaz lost over 50 lbs. Nicole Rice lost over 50 lbs, her husband over 40 lbs. Elaina Luther, a WAPF volunteer Chapter Leader in Pasadena, CA, lost 30 lbs, her husband 30 lbs.
Some of these people have gone on to get certified as Nutrition Wellness Educators, and are now helping other people. Liberation Wellness educators are making anywhere between $25-$100 an hour as wellness counselors.
After speaking with Kevin about the course, I believe the Webinar itself is worth the money, for the confidence you will gain and the command of the subject matter. For those who are looking for a career path in the holistic health field, the Liberation Wellness certification is a wonderful and affordable option.
For more information, or to register for the training course, please visit the Growing Edge Institute website.

Weston Price THUMBS UP on New Liberation Diet Cooking DVD
Posted by Kevin Brown on August 10, 2010
Liberation Wellness DVD
with Nutritionist and Chapter Leader Maureen Diaz.
![]()
Using the Principles of the Liberation Diet, learn how to Eat Like a Queen, and Look Like a Princess!
Full of delicious, rich, home-cooked meals congruent with the Liberation Diet, the healthy eating program that helps you maintain great health and normal weight!
This DVD features Maureen Diaz, Nutritionist and mother of 9 who lives on a farm in the heart of rural Pennsylvania, and Chef Rachel Marie, the head chef with Liberation Wellness.
Here’s the Review…
This video makes a very good companion to the Liberation Diet book which was reviewed in these pages in September 2009 and given a thumbs up.
Having read the book and learned the value of good fats and the dangers of too many starches, many people are often flummoxed as to how to put together a meal that incorporates these principles. And these are the people who already know how to cook whole foods from scratch! Add to them the legions who have never done more than microwave or order take out and you have an enormous audience who will benefit from this video.
In a clear and easy going manner Maureen Diaz shows us how to prepare complete, satisfying meals without undue demand on our time or budgets. One of my favorites is the broccoli fritatta. An entire meal in one bowl, taking minutes to assemble, it is offered as a breakfast option, but could well be served for lunch or dinner. After eating a portion of this I feel confidant that the dubious will realize that they do not need to load up on bread or potatoes to be satisfied.
This is not to say the video demonizes carbohydrates. In fact there is a demonstration for properly preparing porridge. Maureen merely show us how to dine beautifully with somewhat fewer starches and how to replace those calories with more nutrient dense ones from good quality fat.
Most of the basic WAP principle foods, such as bone broths, cultured dairy are included. Organ meats are hidden in a meat loaf. It is all there, without a lot of fuss or bother.
There were a few mentions of other recipes, such as one for homemade ketsup, that had clearly not made the final cut. This was only slightly disconcerting; a minor editing flaw that could be easily avoided in future episodes, which I hope will be forthcoming. Because once this one has been fully digested, I am sure the viewer will want more.
