Long Winters, Hello Cod Liver Oil

Posted by Joette Calabrese on February 9, 2012

Where’s the sun?

Oh, those dreary, sunless, taupe-colored months.  It’s just about this time of year when I wish I could fill up my battery bars with some revitalizing sun.

But without our free source of vitamin D, we’re left to fend for ourselves to keep vitamin D levels adequate.

No one wants the winter blues and it’s well established that they result from a deficiency of vitamin D, present in soluble fats.

How can we be certain that our families are getting enough vitamin D in their diet without relying on the so-called “fortified” cereals, milks and synthetic vitamins?

As a homeopath who teaches mothers and others how to maintain and restore heath, I often suggest using lard in baking (like our grandmothers’ pies!) and in sautéing.  I also teach folks how to employ homeopathic remedies, such as Calc phos 6x, to help promote the proper absorption of nutrients.

All good stuff.

But truly, the easiest way to sustain vitamin D in the winter is to take fermented cod liver oil daily.

Yet, I’ll share a secret.  I teach my clients that cod liver oil is essential even in the warmer months.   Why? Because no matter how often our children are outside and getting vitamin D from the sun, they will not receive a priceless source of nutrition – liver, itself. Quite simply, liver contains more nutrients, gram for gram, than any other food!

It took me years to learn the importance of the consistent habit of eating liver, particularly that from a clean source.  Yet, when I was raising my children, it was nearly impossible to get liver into them.  After years of pâté, liver smothered in bacon and onions, and many turned up noses, I simply had to find a simple solution. Desiccated beef liver, available from Radiant Life in both powder and capsules, provides a convenient way to obtain all the legendary health and nutritional benefits of liver.

It can even be sprinkled into soups and stews and served to unsuspecting recipients of this sacred food!

Getting back to the importance of fermented cod liver oil…

Fermented cod liver oil is a time-tested method for consuming these most precious nutrients. Our ancestors instinctively understood the importance of daily cod liver oil long before the studies substantiated the findings.

My Italian grandmothers raised their large and robust families on such fare. When there was barely enough money for milk during the depression, they made certain that their children at least had cod liver oil. Fermented cod liver oil wasn’t available to them, but at least plain cod liver oil was.

Fermented cod liver oil is packed with fat-soluble vitamin D, which helps promote bone and teeth growth, as well as building immunity. Additionally, it supports healthy body weight and encourages brain development and lung function.

The high quality fermented fare wasn’t available in capsules when my children were young.  So, I incorporated a nightly ritual of taking cod liver oil with a tall glass of fresh milk.  My boys affectionately dubbed it the “spoon of doom”.

It made it more fun.

Things are different today. Now, my sons are young men and they take their fermented cod liver oil daily on their own.  In fact, while in college, they often doubled up on their doses while studying for exams.  The results were always high grades.

Radiant Life makes these age-old products available, and I make the recommendation to all my students/clients and anyone who asks, to take advantage of this near perfect food. For those who wish to avoid the cod liver oil’s taste, fermented cod liver oil capsules are the answer to skipping over the “spoon of doom”.

No need to let those clouds keep you and your family down this season. Instead, make Fermented Cod Liver Oil part of your daily routine and you’ll keep your brain sharp and your smile sunny, too.

Low Fat Diet May Have Killed Danny Gans

Posted by Kevin Brown on June 20, 2011

Las Vegas entertainer Danny Gans, an impressionist who sold more tickets on the Strip than the Rat Pack or Elvis Presley, died early Friday, his manager said. He was 52.

Las Vegas entertainer Danny Gans, an impressionist who sold more tickets on the Strip than the Rat Pack or Elvis Presley, died early Friday, his manager said. He was 52.

Gans, best known for his touching impersonation of entertainer George Burns, began a five-year headline gig at tycoon Steve Wynn’s Wynn Las Vegas hotel in February. Prior to that, he spent 11 years at the Mirage.

Gans earned Las Vegas Entertainer of the Year honors 11 years in a row in the reader poll conducted by the Las Vegas Review-Journal but was not well known beyond Las Vegas.

The cause of death was unknown. Gans’s manager Chip Lightman expressed his shock at the impressionist’s passing.

“The guy was healthy as an ox,” Lightman said. “I spoke to Steve Wynn several times this morning and both of us were shocked. I was with Danny the day before yesterday. Healthy as an ox. I mean, all he ate was egg whites and spinach and worked out religiously.”

Gans was a former minor league baseball player who turned to performing after a career-ending injury.

He appeared as a player in the film “Bull Durham” and found success in his 1995 one-man show in New York before moving the next year to Las Vegas.

He is survived by a wife and three children.

———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————–

George Burns, often imitated by Danny Gans, lives to 100 years, eating eggs, regular fasting, smoking cigars, and occasional drinks.

Mr Burns reported that he ate eggs and fasted 1 day a week- sounds like the Liberation Diet-

According to George BurnsI like eggs because they’re so versatile. They can be poached, fried, scrambled, boiled-soft-boiled, hard-boiled, medium-boiled-shirred, and Benedicted. It’s amazing how many things you can do with an egg after a chicken gets through with it.

Also he said – Sunday I eat nothing. I may have a martini or two… or three… but NO food…

Farmers Versus Feds

Posted by Kevin Brown on May 22, 2011

Farmers vs. feds.

Pa. is flash point in raw-milk fight

By Jeremy Roebuck

Inquirer Staff Writer

In the predawn fog of an April morning last year, armed federal agents fanned out across darkened Lancaster County pastures in search of contraband.

Months of investigation had led to this point. Strong evidence suggested that Rainbow Acres – a small Amish farm just outside Kinzers – served as the hub of a large-scale smuggling operation responsible for shipping hundreds of gallons of illicit product across state lines.

After sweeping past dozing cattle and roosters waiting to crow, the agents finally found what they had come for: dozens of coolers filled with unpasteurized milk.

That 2010 raid resulted in civil sanctions filed last month against farm owner Daniel Allgyer. But the case has also fueled a growing debate between the federal government and the estimated nine million American consumers of a product they call “raw milk.”

Since 2006, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has stepped up enforcement against dairy farmers whose product, the agency says, poses a significant risk to public health. And Pennsylvania – the country’s fifth-largest dairy producer and home to many traditional Amish and Mennonite farms – has become a flash point for the conflict.

But for raw milk devotees, Allgyer – who declined to be interviewed for this article – is just the latest farmer to fall victim to a federal law that they say doesn’t make sense in today’s world.

“He is being treated as if he were a drug lord,” said Jonathan Emord, a lawyer representing Allgyer’s customers in Maryland. “This is fresh milk we’re talking about.”

Federal law has prohibited state-to-state sales of raw milk since 1984, while allowing states to decide what can be sold within their borders. In Pennsylvania – one of 12 states to allow them – more than 110 dairy farms hold raw-milk permits but must submit to rigorous government inspection every three months.

Unpasteurized milk can contain dozens of harmful pathogens such as E. coli, salmonella, and those that cause typhoid and tuberculosis, the FDA says. And according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 1,007 illnesses, 104 hospitalizations, and two deaths were traced to consumption of raw milk between 1998 and 2008.

“The actual number of illnesses is almost certainly higher, but not all cases recognized are reported,” FDA spokeswoman Siobhan DeLancey said.

Raw-milk enthusiasts maintain that the benefits far outweigh the risks. Pasteurization – a process by which milk is briefly heated to 161 degrees or more before being chilled – kills off not only bad bacteria but also the good, they say. The procedure leaches vitamins, enzymes, and taste from the milk, they say.

It took Liz Reitzig, a Maryland mother who routinely paid more than $6 per gallon to have milk from Rainbow Acres shipped to her home outside Washington, only one sip of the creamy, mouth-filling alternative for her to swear off what she called “supermarket swill” for good.

She now talks about unpasteurized milk with the same cultlike zeal shared by many of its other fans – a mix of foodies, naturalists, and health-conscious consumers. On Internet message boards, they speak of the “dead” and “alive” versions of milk in slogans that echo the language of religious transubstantiation. Some even contend raw milk can cure autism.

“None of us is going back to pasteurized milk. It’s a dead product,” Reitzig said days after the FDA filed its case against Rainbow Acres. “We can’t go back to drinking watered-down chalk.”

The raid on Allgyer’s farm has left Reitzig and other customers in a tight spot.

In recent years, the FDA has launched similar investigations against unpasteurized-milk sales at California food co-ops and on Midwestern farms. A YouTube video of a raid on a California business last year showed agents – with guns drawn – pacing among coolers of milk intended for customers.

Mark Nolt, a Mennonite dairy farmer in Newville, Cumberland County, has watched these developments with growing concern. Known among those in the movement as the “Rosa Parks of raw milk,” Nolt opted in 2007 not to renew his state permit, saying government oversight conflicted with his community’s belief system.

But after Nolt ignored several government cease-and-desist notices, authorities led him from his property in handcuffs. The next year, dozens of protesters flocked to his trial, where, defending himself, he refused to enter a plea or pay any of the more than $4,000 in fines.

The Rainbow Acres case, which made its way into a Philadelphia courtroom last month, has played out along similar lines. Government lawyers are seeking an injunction to shut down Allgyer’s raw-milk business. A judge has yet to set a date for a preliminary hearing.

Like Nolt, Allgyer does not have a license to sell raw milk in the state. Instead, his customers participated in a “cow-share program” – an increasingly popular loophole around government restrictions.

Instead of buying the milk directly, customers pay an up-front fee to buy a piece of a cow. They are then entitled to a portion of that animal’s future dairy yields. (The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture said it did not view unpermitted cow-share programs as illegal.)

The FDA targeted Allgyer, though, based on where – not how – he was delivering his milk. After stumbling across an online message board that his customers used to coordinate purchases, undercover investigators placed 23 orders for unpasteurized milk between December 2009 and March, each order to be delivered outside the state.

In electronic messages to his consumers, the Amish Allgyer spoke of making trips to Maryland late at night to avoid detection, according to government court filings. At one point, he advised customers not to share information about the buying group with doctors or government agencies.

Three years removed from his own legal problems, Nolt finds the lengths to which Allgyer’s farm had to go to deliver its milk exasperating.

“In today’s world, with the kind of inspections we have, there’s no reason to be afraid of raw milk,” he said.

10 Sure Fire Steps to “Let’s Get Fat!”

Posted by Morley Robbins on March 13, 2011

What?!?… Yes, you read that right. Let’s get fat!

Come on; let’s take a playful pass at our national obsession with “losing weight” and look at it from a contrasting point of view. Let’s explore: “What do I need to do to make sure that I gain weight?” The research is actually quite compelling, but chances are you may have missed it, so here’s a refresher course on ten proven steps you can take in your daily routine to maximize your fat gain, as much as possible.

1. Start your day with a cup of coffee, the bigger the better: This is actually very cool. Caffeine sends an “alarm” signal to your brain that you’re under attack! Actually, what it does do is override the Adrenal glands to make sure that there’s enough blood sugar to start the day. And what it will also guarantee is that your blood sugar levels will become really low (a.k.a. hypoglycemia), so be sure to eat something sweet with that cup of Joe, that way you’ll ensure a false sense of security, as well as a false sense of energy. Better yet, this daily routine will add to your growing Adrenal fatigue and help make sure that you can’t possibly generate energy without artificial stimulants in your daily diet (i.e. caffeine and simple carbs).

2. Do not eat any protein in the morning: One of the best ways to get fat is to absolutely flood your body with carbs – the simpler, the better. If you introduce protein into your breakfast, it only slows down your body’s ability to deal with all that carb-based sugar, as well as all that Insulin raging through your body seeking to store all that excess sugar. Whenever possible, do what you can to cause the greatest spike in your blood sugar (and subsequently your levels of Insulin) as this will ensure that you develop Insulin Resistance which will guarantee optimal fat storage and really help you pack on the pounds. Don’t worry about how this happens – just do it! And after you do this long enough, it will be a true “sweet surprise” to your waistline and your wardrobe.

3. Be sure to eat a lot of small meals throughout the day: Truth be known, our bodies are designed for surviving starvation. But over the last 50 years in America, we have cast our Paleolithic heritage goodbye and are now able to eat 24/7 – it’s the very best thing you can do under this protocol. In addition, this eating strategy is a proven way to clog up an overworked Liver by never letting it rest. What you truly don’t want if you’re trying to put on “max fat” is allow your Liver to detoxify the challenging ingredients from all your meals, not to mention the 80,000 environmental chemicals. Graze whenever and wherever possible. If necessary, keep that nursery rhyme humming in the background: “Good, better, best – never let the Liver rest!” Giving your Liver more time in between meals is the worst thing you could possibly do if you want to make it on Biggest Gainer! Remember, isn’t that what our diet is all about…

4. Seek out food additives “designed” to cause weight gain: Be sure to fill your cupboards — and your stomachs — with products that contain as much of the following three food additives as possible:

a. Monosodium Glutamate (MSG): Now, don’t be fooled into thinking that this can only be found at Chinese restaurants. Relax, it’s everywhere in the American food system. What makes it more fun is that it’s disguised under names like: “hydrolyzed protein,” “autolyzed yeast,” “calcium caseinate,” “magnesium glutamate,””textured protein,” and 35 other names you don’t know about. You get the idea… Have fun finding it and putting as much of this excitotoxin into your tummy as you can stand. The amazing part about this additive is that it tweaks your Hypothalamus (it’s in the center of your brain…) into letting you eat more and more and more. No cause for alarm, relax, it’s automatic.
b. Aspartame: This, too, is an amazing product for packing on the pounds. Despite what you may think, the FDA actually rejected this food additive for 16 years, until President Bush, Sr. (the one who was a member of Yale’s Skull & Crossbones Society…) took office. Until this past year, it was manufactured by that most trusted chemical corporation, Monsanto; is sold as “NutraSweet” & “Equal;” and is found in countless food products. It might as well be called “NutraFat!” It’s unparalleled in its ability to also trick your brain (yup, you guessed it, it’s that Hypothalamus thing, again…) into weight gain mode and has demonstrated its fatso effectiveness in countless research studies – at least those not sponsored by Monsanto.
c. High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS): Now, this is the granddaddy of all fat stimulating additives. Rush to the store to buy all the sodas, cake mixes, breakfast cereals, candies, cough syrups, sauces, etc. that you can afford. The best part about it and the main reason why it’s everywhere – it’s so incredibly cheap to make! Consequently, it won’t cost you too much as you focus on ”Let’s Get Fat!” And the fact that the Corn Refiners Association now wants to rename it: “Corn Sugars” only guarantees that you’ll buy more foods with it under a new name — you’ll never know what you’re eating then.

5. Discipline yourself to a “low-fat” diet. Your body has a natural ability to burn fat. Not to worry, this metabolic pathway works like a muscle: “use it or lose it.” The fastest way to lose it is to eliminate fat from your diet. This guarantees that your body will lose its fat burning ability at a cellular level, and thus preserve as much adipose tissue (a.k.a. fat) as possible on your ever-expanding chassis. And the best part about this dietary strategy — there’s only so much protein that you can eat in a day. Consequently, the balance of your calories must come from carbs – absolutely locking in the Insulin Resistance (noted in #2 above) and thus assuring your weight gain takes place, almost effortlessly. If you remember nothing else, please remember this: “low-fat” means “high-carb” – it’s a lock, and the research is compelling, despite what you have been told otherwise.

6. Focus on foods “designed” to cause inflammation: At its essence, fat is the body’s way of protecting you from ALL the toxins in your diet and/or your environment. The more toxins in your diet and the more offensive they are, the more fat you absolutely need. To remain vigilant, visualize your body as a raging ball of fire. Be sure to eat plenty of the following foods to ensure that this inflammation is at its peak throughout your body:

a. Foods that are highly processed & refined. Be sure to look for products that come in a box, a can, or a white lunch bag – these are the best!
b. Foods that still have trans-fats. Wherever possible, be sure to select foods that have the word: “Hydrogenated” or “Partially Hydrogenated” on them. Margarine is a favorite, but relax, you’ll find trans fats everywhere even though they were banned 15 years ago.
c. Foods that have an outrageous amount of Omega-6 Fatty Acids. These are best found in most, if not all, of the industrialized vegetable oils. Make sure that they come in a clear bottle as this will ensure a greater likelihood of the oil being rancid, which only adds to the likelihood of it causing more inflammation. The best examples for this “food group” are: Corn Oil, Soybean Oil, Canola Oil, Safflower Oil, or Cottonseed Oil. Btw, the Baby Boomers have a distinct advantage here — you all grew up on Crystallized Cottonseed Oil, which was sold many years ago as CRISCO
d. Foods that contain Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs). Now this is a bit more difficult due to the FDA barring any labels on these foods (again, brought to you by President Bush, Sr. — good ol’ Skull & Crossbones…) Nonetheless, be on the lookout for any produce that has an “8” on the little white sticker or buy only processed food (again, think “box,” “can,” or “frozen”) that has corn, soybean, canola or cottonseed as a main ingredient. These four genetically modified staples now constitute about 80% of the foods we eat as Americans, so it shouldn’t be too hard to find GMOs. Remember, if your food has the Non-GMO Label on the product — put it back! You are only delaying your weight gain by succumbing to organic foods, and spending a fortune in the process. Btw, the latest research with rats has now proven that even with minute amounts of pesticide (a known toxin) in their diet, these laboratory critters become obese. How cool is that?!?… Now to put your mind to rest, when you’re eating GMOs, like Bt Corn or Bt Soy, you’re actually eating pesticide – that’s what “Bt” is code for. And one last dimension, as an added bonus, this eating strategy also works wonders if your goal is to become sterile, but I’ll save that for another post.

7. Plan your biggest and most nutrient dense meal, for as late in the night as possible. You probably already know this (given that you’re committed to “pounding” yourself), but this is actually how Sumo wrestlers achieve their extraordinary weight gains. And who doesn’t want to go toe-to-toe with those guys? The timing (Late!)and the size (Super!)of this meal is a necessity given our plan to overwhelm our digestive system, and again, compromise our liver’s ability to do its critical job. Remember, the more time you give that Liver before bedtime, the more effective it can be in storing all that glucose and detoxifying your system of the toxins – there’s no way, I mean “no weigh…” (Please, pardon the pun…) Bring your liver to its knees, so you can guarantee that you will, as well.

8. Limit your sleep each and every night. Now this is really important. Stay up as late as you can every night possible. Watch David Letterman, get engrossed in thriller movies or just surf the web for as long as your eyes can stand the toothpicks. The less sleep you get, the better. Please don’t tell anyone, but while you’re sleeping, you actually burn fat to provide energy to keep all your countless metabolic processes going. But given that we shut down that fat-burning pathway (see #5 above), we don’t need to worry about that, now do we? And as an added bonus, be sure to sleep with a light on – this will totally confuse your body. In effect, this will make you have a low appetite in the morning, but a high one at night, thus ensuring success with both #2 and #7 above – isn’t this cool how it’s all coming into focus? Just do your part to prevent any true restorative sleep, thereby keeping your body on alert at all times. And btw, if you find you’re always waking up between 1-3 am, well that means one of two things: 1) either your Liver is working way too hard, or 2) you went to bed way too early!

9. Spend as much of your food dollar in restaurants, preferably “Quick Service” ones: As a nation, we currently spend 50% of our food dollar outside the home – that’s about $2,500/person. A little known secret: if you would spend just a few thousand more, you, too, could own the Crave It! Study sponsored by McCormick Spice Co. (2001) Contained in it will be a guaranteed process for “enhancing” your food to ensure maximum visits and thereby, maximum weight gains for patrons. This process makes food “Hyperpalatable,” and with an amazing mixture sugar, fat, and salt, as well as other food additives (see #4 & #6 above), you will learn how to tweak your “hedonic hotspot” also located in your brain (this time it’s the Nucleus Accumbens – neighbor to the Hypothalamus). Once the “hotspot” gets compromised, you’ll never feel satiated, and you will keep coming back for more and more and more food. You can’t help it – you have just become a victim to the central wiring of our brain: the cue-urge-reward-habit cycle that fuels ALL addictions. And best of all, the added bonus to this step: you lose total control over the foods that are going into your body. This is your failsafe strategy: Eat out >>> Get fat… Trust me, it works like a charm. Try it regularly, and let that food eatertainment industry stimulate you to your ever expanding core.

10. And finally, do not, under any circumstance, exercise: Don’t even think about it! What are you trying to do? If you exercise, you’ll only build more muscle and then there’ll be that many more places (i.e. muscle cells) to store all that excess glucose. Now, I’m only going to say this once more, the less muscle, the more Insulin Resistance. And the more Insulin Resistance, the more your body is forced to store that “food” as fat. Insulin Resistance guarantees a faster and greater weight gain. OK? Remember, lose it – don’t use it! So let’s lose as much muscle as possible to ensure optimal fat storage and weight gain. And best of all, if you really harness yourself to #2 and # 5 above, refined foods will absolutely melt in your mouth – you won’t even have to expend all that needless energy chewing your food. How’s that for a true winning step to our getting fatty strategy.

So there you have it! A sure fired, 10-step program to maximize your fat gain. Why I’m so confident, I’ll even guarantee it!

And for those of you who think I’ve totally lost my mind, relax. I’ve just decided it’s time to inject some levity into the relentless din of dietary recommendations seeking to address the nation’s most pressing chronic illness: Obesity. This condition is absolutely out of control across the country and it reflects the abominable state of our food system, our complete lack of commitment to real, restorative food, as well as our unwillingness as a nation to believe the simple truths about what foods, and what food additives, actually cause the creation of or the burning of fat.

A sobering statistic: in the time it took you to read this article (~15 min), 12.5 people died from Obesity-related diseases in America. (Please, let that sink in for a moment – that’s one very 72 seconds…) Even more sobering is the accelerated rate of this condition in infants and children… A rather bleak future, unless we wake up from our processed food stupor and come to our senses about our individual and collective responsibility to reverse these easily correctable dietary trends.

Now, take a deep breath… we’re almost done, but this is the most important part. If you “master” all ten of the steps outlined above, and I’m deadly serious now, it will very likely assure you of becoming what is called Leptin Resistant. What in the world is that, you ask? Well it’s relatively “new” on the research scene (~1994), but Leptin Resistance has now been identified as the leading cause of our ever increasing waist lines, and is repeatedly being shown to be the underlying force behind the growing tsunami of chronic disease crippling America.

Truth be known, Leptin is your body’s master hormone, and is produced by your fat cells, of all places. And much to everyone’s surprise, it keeps the Hypothalamus and all its many, many homeostatic processes running properly. (Btw, the Hypothalamus is the “Intel chip” running your body’s countless metabolic and bodily functions!)

The proper functioning of this critical part of your brain is absolutely affected by the foods, and especially the food additives, that we eat each and every day. And for those of you who are thinking: “Well, there’s no way I’m Leptin Resistant…” Here’s the acid test: Do you have any noticeable fat on your bod? If so, you’re more than likely Leptin Resistant. What this means is that the signaling between your Hypothalamus, your Liver, and your fat cells is blocked likely due to excess sugars in your diet, the “communication” is likely dysregulated, and as a result, your body is forced to store more and more of your food energy as fat — and that’s a fact! To think and eat otherwise is to buck three million years of programming in that “Intel Chip” running your body…

If I could wave a magic wand, my wish would be to have you truly understand the absurdity of following steps #2 and #5 and the devastation that this excess sugar is having in our bodies. Each year, the average American consumes 160 pounds of refined sugar, coupled with 50 pounds of High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS), and another 20 pounds of artificial sweeteners, to boot. And yet, we profess innocence. I’m well aware of the fact that YOU don’t add it to your food, trust me, it is absolutely being done for you and to you. The biggest impact from this annual binge of sugar consumption — it’s wreaking havoc with our Insulin production, and consequently is the primary dietary culprit in the accelerated rise in chronic disease – far, far worse than the saturated fat you’re so terrified of eating! Continued use of excess sugars in our foods is a crime against humanity and we are all innocent bystanders – it’s high time we “Just say ‘No!’ “

Now, for those of you who would like to stop this ever growing madness and learn how to de-engineer each and every one of these 10 steps, and thus avoid the devastating challenge of Leptin Resistance, please contact me as noted below. We have a proven process and several programs designed to make sure you are able to: 1) let go of the dietary mythology slowly killing Americans, 2) learn how to “let go of fat,” and 3) learn how to keep it off.

Give us a call… What have you got to lose?!?…

A votre santé!

41 Percent of All Pregnancies Aborted – NYC

Posted by Kevin Brown on March 2, 2011

Wellness starts with Values

When we see a story like this, it is almost too much for our mind to consider/        nyc41percent.com

If we are confused about how our government and corporations could promote such an unhealthy diet as to create this pandemic of obesity and chronic disease, it all begins with the value, or lack thereof,  of human life. Just as the value of saturated fat, red meat and liver, which once were regarded as “sacred foods”, but in modern times has had their value turned upside-down, so it is with the value of people.

In today’s modern society, the love of money is exalted above human health- and raised above human life!

This is due to the teaching of the absurd evolutionary theory, which removes God from our thinking, and undermines the fact that we are made in His image. We are no longer the offspring of God, but have “evolved” from rocks and trees. This theory lowers us to the level of the plants and animals, and naturally encourages tree and animal worship,

Following this flawed belief system, just like following the Low-Fat belief system, logically works itself out to these devastating consequences.

Just as the Eugenics movement in America, working off the writings of Darwin,  began to destroy and sterilize minorities, and the Nazi movement picked up the program to rid itself of “less evolved” undesirables, so now planned parenthood is effectively exterminating 41% of the children in the 5 Boro New York City area.

One of our founding fathers, Thomas Jefferson said “We Hold These Truths to be Self-Evident, That All Men are CREATED Equal”. We can only be equal, if we are created/

How I Lose Weight, or Not

Posted by Maureen Diaz on January 7, 2011

Mixing up the Thanksgiving Stuffing-*not* something helpful for me to eat!

Lately this is something which I have been contemplating a lot, as back in November and early December I very rapidly gained ten pounds-Ugh! As I squeezed into what had just a few weeks prior been an appealing dress, it occurred to me that I had better step back and take a look at what I was doing to cause this dramatic-and scary!-set back. Why, oh why, is it so easy to gain weight, but so hard to lose or keep it off?! There are several things which I identified as problems and needed to change.

First, way back in August I had a mishap which made it impossible to follow my preferred methods of exercise. In fact, for quite some time it was very difficult to perform any significant type of physical exertion, as it was simply far too painful and detrimental to healing! Because of the level of physical activity prior to this, my body had reset to a fairly high metabolism which I was able to sustain for a period of time. But after awhile everything slowed down again. By mid November nearly 3 months had passed, I was still having a great deal of trouble with my shoulder, and returning to running and dancing was still out of the question as the bouncing and jolting was simply too much. But I still needed to do something, as gaining more weight was not an option!

Another thing that had changed was my eating habits, to some extent anyway. I no longer strictly quit eating in the afternoon, but would often have a meal in the early evening. Experience had taught me that this was never a good thing!

Bread making was going on full blast about the middle of November as I prepared for the Weston A Price conference, for which I was providing sourdough bread cubes for stuffing. While I did not eat much bread, I did eat more than I had become accustomed to, which certainly upped my carbohydrate intake. The body loves to store those carbs as fat, and that seems to be just what happened-especially with the lack of good, physical exertion! I believe gluten is also a factor in my hypothyroidism, and so this was likely another contributing factor.

In addition to these things, I had often been enjoying a glass of wine or ale in the evening. While I never over-indulge and am against drunkenness-period!, I do not believe that enjoying a glass with dinner or at home while relaxing is wrong; it can even be good for you. But due to the high carb content of these beverages they are not our friend when we have a weight problem and as such need to be  limited.

One other “little” thing: I was drinking coffee fairly often again, something I had given up quite some time ago. My preference is for strong, dark coffee with heavy cream and Sucanat. The sugar certainly gave me a carb-start to the day, and the caffein is hard on the adrenal glands, suppressing the thyroid (along with the gluten in that bread), and here we go again…

The dark chocolate truffles which my children were making as gifts didn’t always make it into the gift boxes either :)

So here I am now, early January, 4 1/2 months after my little accident and still with a very painful shoulder, but determined to turn things back around. And I am! Recently I was able to start exercising again, albeit carefully. I can again run and perform my dancercize routine, and have added some abdominal and gluteous maximus exercises. Tea, much lower in caffein and acid, is again my beverage of choice and coffee is relegated to the occasional treat (with xylitol instead of Sucanat). I am not having the wine or ale (it can wait for a “treat”, once in awhile). While bread making is something I find very enjoyable, I feel no need to eat it. Coconut oil is again added daily as a supplement. And late night eating? A thing of the past!

And so the new year begins, and a “new” me! The pounds are not coming off as quickly as I would like, but they are coming off again! By this time next month I expect to be to a new low and even nearer to my goal.

Having problems losing the weight you need to lose? Perhaps you can benefit from my experience and join me in this most beneficial of endeavors: to arrive at the weight that is best for you and in the process look good, feel great, and have fun in the process!

An Inheritance Squandered

Posted by Lauren Snyder Grosz on December 29, 2010

gwyneth paltrow Pictures, Images and PhotosRecently Raine Irving Saudners invited me to do a guest post on her blog Agriculturesociety.  It was such a thrill for me because I admire Raine’s work; she does an excellent job of making complicated topics very readable without sacrificing the details.

I admire the Guests the way some people admire the Kennedys.  My daughter is named Charlotte Catherine because I wanted to be able to call her C.C. as a way of paying homage to C.Z. Guest; horsewoman, fashion icon, and gardener.  In the Spring of 2002, I had a chance to attend a lecture she was giving at The Chicago Botanic Garden.  She was 83 at the time and appeared to be in excellent health.  A year and a half later C.Z. Guest died of ovarian cancer.

In the November issue of Harper’s Bazaar, I was saddened to learn that C.Z.’s daughter Cornelia is a vegan.  A quick Google search revealed that she has made this decision for health reasons.  Congestive Heart Failure turned my father, who had been an exceptional high school and collegiate athlete into the equivalent of an invalid when I was 16 years old.  Two years later, I became a vegetarian as a way of steering clear of my dad’s fate.  Occasionally, I’d lapse, but it wasn’t until I became pregnant that I permanently ditched vegetarianism.  Cornelia is almost 47, so it’s not likely that pregnancy will rescue her from her vegan wasteland.  Discipline will also make it harder to turn away from something she perceives as providing a payoff.  As a young socialite in 80′s, the article emphasizes how her equestrian habit saved her from the other popular habits of the era.  Even if she was out late, there were horses to ride the next morning.

Once, I made the acquaintance of a pro football player, who had started drinking soy and was a vegetarian during the week.  When I began inquiring as to why he was doing this, what I learned was interesting, disturbing really.  He felt this way of eating required discipline, hard work, and persistence, all of the things that helped him to be a starter in the NFL.  He was a physical specimen to behold, but was unable to credit his grandmother’s  and mother’s love of traditional southern food for his stature and strength.  This inability to give credit where credit is due is also what led Cornelia Guest to ban all animal products from her life.  The saying in their house was, “a pound of butter a day keeps the doctor away” and still she banishes the food!  It isn’t enough that her mother enjoyed robust health until she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Surly butter, cream, eggs, and meat must be to blame.

Certainly, this is what I thought because butter was king in our house and from my vantage point it had caused nothing but trouble.  My mom died at the ripe old age of 64.  Yes.  She smoked, but everybody knows food plays a part.  I’ve already mentioned that my dad lived like an invalid, who survived until he was 72 because he slept about fifteen hours a day, and swallowed prescription pills that could only be held by a giant shoe box.  Somehow, it never occurred to me that my family’s health woes could have anything to do with the bank of cabinets devoted to snack foods or that my mom liked to start her day with dessert and a glass of Folgers  Crystals.  She was very particular and always insisted on Heinemann’s Coffee Cakes.  A cursory glance at their ingredient list fails to turn up anything that belongs in a Bavarian coffee cake or any other food for that matter.  Now blaming sugar even seems far fetched because unless we were making sugar cookies from scratch, it seems highly unlikely that any of our favorite companies used anything other than High Fructose Corn Syrup and soybean oil.  My dietary choices were also hampered by my mom’s fabulous figure, never weighing more than 125 pounds, she was of the opinion that only peasants couldn’t wear their normal clothes home from the hospital after giving birth!  How could sugar, even if it was fake, be to blame?  She was thin, strong, and enjoyed incredibly robust health, until diagnosed with cancer.  Within a year, we had lost her.

That very same year, I serendipitously came across the life changing work of Sally Fallon Morrell, President of The Weston A Price Foundation.  While I hadn’t been a vegetarian for many years, it wasn’t until then that I understood the importance of having animal fat in my diet.  Fortunately, there was enough real food in our house; my mom frequently cooked from Julia Child’s Mastering the Art of French Cooking, that I instantly knew which foods were the culprits of disease in my family.  The drive to be healthy seems incredibly strong in children who’ve lost a parent at a young age.  Gwyneth Paltrow provides a window into the extremes someone, with means, will go to in order to avoid getting cancer.  She was very close to her father and to have lost him when she was only 30 obviously took a toll.  In her new cookbook she reminisces about cooking with him and notes that health food was not the priority, hence her obsession with Veganese, a concoction made entirely from fake vegetable oils.  In addition, the starlet avoids dairy and only eats animals with two legs.  I can’t help but wonder how on earth her mother  Blythe Danner allows her lovely daughter to carry on with this warped destructive food philosophy.  Not surprisingly , Gwyneth announced that she has osteopenia a precursor to osteoporosis.  She is unable to connect the dots between her diet that is devoid of Vitamin A and D and having a disease commonly reserved for old women.  Her remedy for this which was urged by her doctors is to take prescription strength Vitamin D.  What is most disturbing is that she has enormous influence, just as Cornelia Guest has in her circle, and hordes of young girls will blindly follow their advice!

Lastly, it’s important to add that many people already understand the importance of eliminating junk food, such as sugar laden cereals and soda.  Dr. Price showed that this is only part of what is responsible for radiant health and wholeness.  Unless the all important fat soluble activators are given their due people will still experience compromised health.  Madonna’s daughter Lola is proof of this: the Material Girl’s family is on a strict organic, vegetarian, macrobiotic diet and yet the poor girl still was not spared orthodontics and additionally required a back brace for scoliosis.

Living long and living well depends on eating high-fat high-cholesterol foods. Yes.  We all have to die sometime, but that doesn’t mean it has to be via a massive heart attack, cancer,  or spending the winter of one’s life in an Alzheimer’s facility.  Traditional diets provide the antidote to these grim scenarios.  The second arrow in our quiver is that an infrastructure for excellent sanitization exists – hot water, stainless steel tanks, electrification – that should allow us to all live to a ripe old age (barring accidents).  Yet,  instead of flourishing, the diseases of civilization have never had a stronger hold on us.  It’s simply not enough to know something is bad.  While we do not need to turn our children into small nutritionists, they must be able to discern between what is true and false, and why certain principles must not be abandoned in the kitchen.

Emotional Liberation with Yoga and EFT

Posted by emotionalyoga on December 19, 2010

As most anyone who has been practicing Yoga can attest, emotions often arise “on the mat.”  It has been proven that there is a link between emotions and the body─that specific body parts tend to be storehouses for specific emotions.  The chest may house feelings of loneliness, the pelvis might be an area where shame is stored, anger is often experienced as back pain, and so on.  This explains why some people feel deep emotional responses during certain yoga postures.  It is not uncommon for yoga teachers to come across a weeping student while teaching a yoga class.

The Emotional Freedom Technique functions as emotional acupressure.  The technique, developed by Gary Craig, a Stanford University engineering graduate who set out to find an effective approach for treating emotional issues, is designed to reduce or eliminate emotional and physical stress by unblocking energetic meridians through tapping on pressure points.  The Emotional Freedom Technique affects the same energetic meridians as the ancient Chinese systems of acupuncture and acupressure.  Generally, the EFT practitioner works with his or her clients to uncover issues through talk therapy followed by this tapping technique.  The philosophy behind EFT is that the cause of all negative emotions is a disruption in the body’s energy system.  EFT suggests that negative emotions arise as the result of the body’s energetic response to an event.  EFT maintains that since we experience negative emotions as a result of the body’s energy system being thrown off-balance, restoring energetic equilibrium will cause negative emotions to vanish.

Emotional Yoga combines yoga and EFT to cultivate physical and emotional awareness and then balances energetic disruptions.  Instead of uncovering emotional issues through the mind, it is often more effective to uncover underlying feelings through the body.  The body possesses intuitive emotional wisdom.  In fact, sometimes the physical self is aware of emotions that cannot be accessed through conventional talk therapy.  By tuning in to the body’s messages and by linking specific yoga postures with specific emotions, it is possible to unearth negative emotions that are stored within the body.  By performing the EFT tapping sequence, it is possible to achieve immediate and lasting breakthroughs.  Combining yoga therapy with EFT provides an intense emotional shift by involving the body in both the diagnosis and the treatment of the body’s emotional and energetic needs.  On their own, both yoga and EFT are very useful.  However, Emotional Yoga deepens one’s ability to induce and promote healing.

Negative emotions can be excavated from the body through yoga.  But, awareness does not necessarily bring about healing. Instead, wellness comes about when releasing stored negative energy using EFT.  Then the body’s energetic imbalances are corrected and healing can occur.   Emotional Yoga transforms lives. The techniques have helped many people to successfully break free of anxiety, anger, depression, fears, phobias, PTSD, OCD, trauma, addiction, eating disorders, stress, headaches, persistent physical pain and a host of other issues. Since the cause of all negative emotions is a disruption of the body’s energy system, then the body must be used to both diagnose and treat its issues.  Emotional Yoga increases the efficacy of both yoga and EFT and leads to immediate and lasting healing.

Providing clients with dietary recommendations such as those advertised by Liberation Wellness has helped tremendously to bring clients to a deeper level of healing.  The body and the emotions are intertwined.  It is almost impossible to feel good emotionally when one’s physical health is compromised.  But, it is also challenging to feel good physically when a person’s emotional equilibrium is off-balance.  Emotional Yoga is a wonderful way to integrate emotional and physical wellness, and another tool to help liberate you.

I recently saw Kevin Brown give a talk about the Liberation Wellness Project in which he said that Americans are “sick, fat, and confused.”  I agree!  Emotional Yoga helps to free people from the bondage of negative thoughts and emotions that keep them stuck in self-destructive mental and emotional patterns.  For example, I have a client who is a self-proclaimed chronic sugar-addict.  Even after becoming aware of the sound principles behind the diet advocated by Kevin she was unable to get herself to switch from a diet centered on carbohydrate consumption to one based on fat and proteins.

Until we began our work together, she was aware that she couldn’t stop binging on sugar but wasn’t aware why she was engaging in such self-destructive eating.  After her first Emotional Yoga session, she realized that she had confused food with love.  She ate to fill her loneliness and assuage her pain.  For her, there was an emotional payoff to eating self-destructively.  As a child she had forged an emotional link between the sugar cookies and cakes and candies that her mother fed her and feeling loved.  As an adult, she didn’t want to give up these foods because of her deep emotional need for nurturing.  I used Emotional Yoga to help her to physically release these emotional connections and she was then free to follow a healthier way of eating.  She is no longer sick, confused or fat (this client has lost 32 pounds in 2 months).

As you move closer to physical liberation I suggest incorporating practices that encourage emotional emancipation as well.  True freedom includes mental, physical, and emotional liberation!

She has also been trained in Advanced Level EFT. She works with individuals, couples, and groups to help people transform themselves and their lives.
