The Right To Know What You’re Eating

NEWS RELEASE

DEMAND THE RIGHT TO KNOW WHAT YOU ARE EATING

May 9, 2012

Unfortunately, genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are currently in many of our staple foods such as soybeans, corn, and sugar beets.  Therefore, the foods you are presently buying at your local grocery store do contain genetically engineered ingredients.  A genetically modified organism is an organism whose genetic material has been altered using genetic engineering techniques. The genetic material from one species is taken and then inserted into the permanent genetic code of another. These techniques, generally known as recombinant DNA technology, use DNA molecules from different sources, which are combined into one molecule to create a new set of genes.

The Threat

The safety of humans, animals, and our environment are threatened by this untested manipulation of foods produced for consumption and contaminating our food supply and environment.  There have been many studies showing the harm that genetically modified organisms can cause, such as cancer, allergies, impaired DNA function, and accumulated toxins, to humans and animals. Environmentally, it will and has contaminated our pure, non-modified food supply.  The U.S. grows the most GMO crops in the World.

“We see the increasing prevalence of GMO crops in North America as the most serious threat to our food security not to mention the ever growing organic food industry. Front Door Organics only sources certified organic products and we’re extremely concerned about maintaining the integrity of our organic food supply,” said JJ Sheppard, who screens the products FDO carries.

The Puppeteers and Their Agenda

Who are the culprits that want to keep us in the dark concerning GMOs?  Can you say Monsanto?  And, their evil sisters, Dupont, Dow, and others?  They purport that anything containing GMOs are healthy, safe, and do not need labeling. Their silent motto is most probably “Control the food, control the people.”  Their prize – unbelievable profits.  At this time Monsanto is even suing the State of Vermont because that State has introduced a bill, H-722 (Vermont Right to Know Genetically Engineered Food Act), to fight against non-labeling of GMO foods. It requires any food producer to label anything containing genetically modified ingredients.

Monsanto is not alone against consumers on this issue. We can add to the mix of “bad guys” corporate agribusinesses in general, and the U.S. FDA, in particular, which sides with commercial interests and refuses to stand up for what the people whom they are charged with protecting are demanding. They know consumers will not buy GM foods.  Health Canada and the FDA have consistently blocked standards and guidelines at Codex Committees that would mandate  labeling of GMO foods.  Currently, Codex has compromised on this issue by letting each country decide whether to require its own GMO food labeling. But let’s not forget Congress, which ignores proposed anti-GMO legislation and their own constituents’ desires on the issue.  Clearly, Agribusiness lobbyists have gotten to them.

Who Is Fighting Back

Ninety percent of U.S. and Canadian consumers want their food labeled as GMO if it contains biotech food.  Europe has fought back against GMOs in their food supply for more than a decade with stringent food rules and regulations. The National Health Federation has been fighting on U.S. and Canadian soil against GMOs for years and internationally at Codex Alimentarius (the World food governing body) meetings for full disclosure to consumers on labels of GMO products.  California and Vermont, for their part, are fighting back with their “Right to Know” legislation, with a Statewide California ballot this Fall to vote for their right to GMO labeling.

Our governments will not fight for our rights, so, the playing field is now consumers, environmentalists, and farmers against agribusinesses and their own government.

What Can You Do?

Consumers have the right to be fully informed about the foods and drinks they consume. Demand full disclosure of all food products sold in America. Put pressure on the U.S. FDA to require mandatory labeling domestically and to represent U.S. consumers’ wishes at Codex by correcting FDA’s position and ending its close alignment with industry groups. Visit the NHF website (www.thenhf.com) to send your petitions today!  Consumers can win this.  The momentum has begun but it is up to you now.  Let Agribusiness and our government see our power.

Judge Asked To Reconsider

Posted by Kevin Brown on April 13, 2012

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Judge Asked to Reconsider Dismissal of FDA Raw Milk Lawsuit

Falls Church, Virginia (April 11, 2012) (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — On March 30 federal district judge Mark W. Bennett issued an order dismissing a lawsuit challenging the interstate commerce ban on raw milk for human consumption filed by the Farm-to-Consumer Legal Defense Fund against the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Along with six consumers, an agent for a buyers club, and a dairy farmer selling raw milk to out-of-state customers, the Legal Defense Fund filed suit in February 2010 over a federal regulation (21 CFR 1240.61). The regulation prohibits raw milk and raw milk products (other than raw cheese aged at least sixty days) from crossing state lines.

The Legal Defense Fund has filed a motion with Judge Bennett asking him to amend his judgment with respect to the buyers club agent and the dairy farmer.

Even though Judge Bennett dismissed the case, up to this point the lawsuit has accomplished several things:

(1) FDA is on public record promising that it will not take action against individual consumers crossing state lines to obtain raw milk. “Citizens can now purchase raw milk in any state, take it back to their state of residence and consume it without fear of any reprisal from FDA,” said Gary Cox, General Counsel for the Legal Defense Fund.

(2) Americans now know FDAs views on food freedom.  In the course of the lawsuit, FDA made the following assertions:

“There is no absolute right to consume or feed children any particular food.”

There is no fundamental right to one’s “own bodily and physical health.”

People “do not have a fundamental right to obtain any food they wish.”

Farm-to-Consumer Legal Defense Fund, Pete Kennedy explains, It is clear now that if people want their right to eat the foods of their choice to be respected, FDA must be reined in.

(3) FDA was forced to give its interpretation of how the agency would apply the law to an agent for consumers crossing state lines to obtain raw milk and to a farmer knowingly selling to out-of-state consumers and their agents.

The judge held that all plaintiffs lack standing to pursue the case since there was no “threat of injury in fact.” Bennett found that “the FDA has made abundantly clear that it has not and does not intend to enforce the regulations against any of the plaintiffs.”

We are disappointed that the court did not recognize how FDA is using the regulation to intimidate both farmers and consumers who are simply trying to have access to raw milk, stated Pete Kennedy, president of the Farm-to-Consumer Legal Defense Fund.  While FDA has not brought an enforcement action against individual consumers, it has acted to enforce the regulation against several farmers and has inspected peoples private homes using this regulation.

In regard to consumer plaintiffs, the opinion noted a November 1, 2011 FDA press release stating, “With respect to the interstate sale and distribution of raw milk, the FDA has never taken, nor does it intend to take, enforcement action against an individual who purchased and transported raw milk across state lines solely for his or her own personal consumption.” The agency issued the press release in response to a rally held by the activist group, the Raw Milk Freedom Riders, at FDA headquarters in Silver Springs, Maryland. Earlier, FDA made a similar statement in answer to questions posed by the judge.

The buyers club agent in the case, Eric Wagoner, had over 100 gallons of raw milk embargoed by the Georgia Department of Agriculture in October 2009; shortly after, Wagoner and other members of the buyers club were forced to dump the milk in the presence of an FDA agent. Judge Bennett rejected Wagoner’s allegation that the FDA–rather than the state agency–”enforced” the embargo and destruction of the raw milk.

Wagoner stated in an affidavit submitted to the court that it was the FDA agent, Marybeth Willis, who ordered him to destroy the raw milk. In response to a question posed by the judge on FDAs interpretation of 21 CFR 1240.61, the agency had explained that while it would not likely bring an enforcement action if the agent were to purchase and make a single delivery of milk to an out of state consumer…to the extent however, that the agent is engaged in the organized distribution of raw milk to multiple customers across state lines, this type of activity would be far more likely to attract regulatory scrutiny.

The judge’s opinion did not address the situation of Mike Buck, a South Carolina dairy farmer who sells raw milk on his farm and in local retail stores to residents of Georgia and North Carolina. In response to a question asked by the judge, FDA stated that to the extent a producer regularly sells raw milk that is ultimately transported across state lines, FDA would review the facts for possible regulatory action. The judge’s opinion was silent about FDA enforcement against agents for raw milk consumers and farmers selling raw milk to out of state customers. FDA has concentrated its enforcement efforts against distributors and producers of raw milk.

The Legal Defense Fund has filed a motion with the federal district court to amend the judgment, requesting that the claims made by Buck and Wagoner not be dismissed. The motion argues that Wagoner, acting as an agent, has already been the subject of an enforcement action by FDA and that Buck engages in exactly the kind of behavior that FDA stated could result in an enforcement action by the agency.

The Farm-to-Consumer Legal Defense Fund suggests that citizens urge Congress to repeal the FDA ban on interstate transportation by passing HR 1830. With the court deciding at this time not to hear the merits of the case, its up to Congress to protect the rights of Americans to access the foods of their choice.

Action Alert
Tell FDA to Label GMOs
Transgenic seeds should not be on the market. They are a threat to the future of farming and consumer freedom of choice. Monsanto should not be suing farmers whose land the company’s products contaminate; Monsanto should be paying them damages.

-Pete Kennedy, Esq., President of FTCLDF

Current FDA policies let companies hide GMOs in our food by not labeling them. The FDA has allowed this even though it has no proof that GMOs are safe for human consumption. To the contrary, internal FDA documents reflect scientists’ concerns that GMOs could pose significant health risks.

Fifteen European Union nations, Russia, Japan, China, Australia, New Zealand, and many other countries around the world require genetically modified foods to be labeled. Consumers in those countries can–and do–choose not to buy or eat GMO food.
The Center for Food Safety has filed a formal legal petition with FDA demanding that the agency require the labeling of genetically modified foods. The FTCLDF and hundreds of other nonprofits are supporting the petition. Please help support this effort by sending your comments to the FDA!

Re: FDA-2011-P-0723
I urge FDA to require labeling of foods with genetically modified ingredients.

A number of studies over the past decade have revealed that genetically modified foods can pose serious risks to humans, livestock, wildlife, and the environment. Human health effects include damage to organ systems, allergic reactions, and immune suppression. The use of GMOs in agriculture has led to uncontrolled contamination on non-GMO crops and plants; a dramatic increase in pesticides released into our environment; and the creation of an epidemic of herbicide-resistant “superweeds.” These health and environmental impacts matter to the public and support the requirement that these foods be labeled.

In the U.S., we pride ourselves on having choices and making informed decisions. But under current FDA regulations, we don’t have that choice when it comes to GMO ingredients in the foods we purchase and feed our families.

A market system can only work if the consumer has the ability to make choices. By allowing companies to hide the presence of GMOs in our food, the FDA has crippled the market system and allowed Americans to become part of a massive uncontrolled experiment against their wishes.
I urge you to grant the petition for mandatory labeling of foods with GMO ingredients.

Sincerely,

Be The Healer in Your Home

Posted by Joette Calabrese on March 9, 2012

As parents, our great responsibility is to nourish and protect our children. We must defend them like mother lionesses. Let me point out that “mother” is a term I use for anyone who has loving charge over another. The same holds true for the “mothers” of friends or pets. Here are my strategies to become the healer in your home:

1. Always protect your thinking. When you’re told that the only way to address an ear infection or fever is with an antibiotic, learn enough homeopathy not only to prove otherwise to yourself, but to offer the same success to others.

2. Create distance between your chosen method of mothering and those who criticize your choice. This doesn’t mean that you purge family and friends. Instead, saturate yourself with enough homeopathic mastery to protect your family from negative influences.

3. Learn basic homeopathy strategies and stay connected with others who do the same. That may mean joining a homeopathy study group or starting your own. (See the free bi-monthly Ezine and blog www.homeopathyworks.net.) Once you’ve mastered some of the basics, don’t stop there. Homeopathy has an undeniable compendium of medical literature from around the world from which millions of mothers have drawn their skills.

4. Use the naysayer as motivation. Remember…the best retribution is a life well lived. Go out and cure a dog of an ear infection, treat a neighbor who was just stung by a bee, help your spouse get over that insomnia and anxiety. Arm yourself with just enough homeopathy to get the ball rolling in your life so that others can’t help but eventually recognize your skill.

5. Employ pig-headed willpower. Commit to staying on track. Being a “good little patient” will not serve you or your family. Keep yourself stimulated with knowledge and information. Utilize learning techniques by using your time cleverly. Download classes and study via CDs. They’re a first-rate way to exploit otherwise wasted time in your busy day. Constant learning and reaffirming will hold you to your convictions.

As you become a grandparent or great grandparent, my hope for you is that you will be able to look back at your life with a satisfying inner smile that speaks of what was set right by your hands. Hold your head high and declare: I raised my family. I healed my family. I cured friends and neighbors because I used my God-given intelligence and committed time to a life worth living. Then, when you see an ad for Pepsi Cola or a billboard for another flu vaccine, you can smile knowing that your power was in your resolute knowledge.

Get Your Kids High

Posted by Joette Calabrese on February 2, 2012

Wait.  Did you think I meant…….

Courtesy of www.thenutritionpost.com

No, no.  Not that kind of high.

I’m talking about a high fever.  In fact, it’s high time we all understood that getting a fever has phenomenal value in the short and long term.

This was known back in the late 1700’s, when Dr. Samuel Hahnemann, the Father of Homeopathy, acknowledged that fever is an occasion.

An occasion for what though?

First off, a fever provides lifelong immunity by completing a short term illness. Secondly, fevers help to prevent what would otherwise become chronic illness as long as they’re not suppressed. But when a fever is suppressed, so is the illness it was trying to combat. In the end, that same illness is simply heaved into the future. And there it looms in the form of chronic disease.

Let me explain.

Fever is the marker of a stimulated and activated immunological reaction.   The virus or bacteria is the provoking agent which triggers a normal response from the white blood cells.  The pain, fatigue and fever that ensues is what we call being sick.

My goal was to be sure that my children were allowed to complete their childhood illnesses with a good high fever, so that the cell remediated responses could clear the illness fully.  I never used sponge baths of alcohol or warm water. Instead, allowing the fever to flourish was paramount to the long term wellness of my child. In fact, it was an opportunity for wellness.

In other words, when someone (especially a baby or child) is sick, not only is a fever a natural response, but it’s also an indicator that there’s a “so far, so good” action occurring.

Fevers symbolize positive reaction.

But you might ask, “Can’t fevers be dangerous?”

Well, it depends on the temperature. Some say that 106.7° is the danger point and that this kind of fever is usually caused by an intracranial hemorrhage from trauma, as opposed to a strep or viral infection. Other medical experts are convinced that above 107° is the threatening high point.

Nonetheless, most infections in childhood diseases limit the febrile response to about 105°.

Fevers do not just build up immunity and gird the body against future colds and flu’s.  In fact, Dr. Thomas Cowan, a recent speaker at the Weston A. Price Conference in Dallas, aptly said, “Every time I treat fever, I’m treating cancer in the future.”  He was referencing evidence which shows that cancer is the result of suppressed fever and he went on to say that the fever’s response is the way we maturate our white blood cells.

His sentiments are that we should embrace the febrile response because fever is not an illness at all…it’s simply a symptom.  Indeed, an illness can cause damage, but a fever is not the illness, it’s only the febrile response.

And this response is a therapeutic one, too; fevers cure the problem by “cooking” off the virus or bacteria.

In the last 50 years, there hasn’t been even one thread of evidence showing that fevers cause damage, unless they’re outside of the normal range.

Why then, have we treated it?  If you ask a candid pediatrician, he will tell you that it’s because the parents entreat him to “Do something!”    Then, if you ask parents, they say the reason they treat fever is because their doctor told them to do it.

‘Sounds like the cat running around trying to catch its tail…a rather silly reason to place our children into a risky setting, wouldn’t you agree?  Instead, let’s base our parental decisions on sounder judgment.

If you must treat fever, let me share the methods I’ve used for my own children and which I’ve taught to mothers and others over the years.

Yes, fevers are uncomfortable, but the authentic goal is not to suppress the fever, but to keep your child hydrated with lots and lots of good quality fluids.  Here are my guidelines:

Treating Fever Guidelines

  • Offer kombucha
  • Give your child water with fresh lemon and Bioplasma (a homeopathic mixture made by Hyland’s)
  • Hand over a cup of ice chips…flavored with lemon and raw honey
  • Make some freshly  squeezed  fruit juice (at home) and  dilute it with water
  • Offer a warm cup of raw milk with a splash of vanilla
  • Provide a tall glass of refreshing cold milk
  • Have your child sip on a mug of bone broth
  • Suggest a glass of kefir
  • Mix some yogurt in water with a bit of raw honey
  • Blend raw honey with a splash of vinegar in water
  • Whip up some homemade ice cream with raw milk and cream
  • Brew herbal teas, such as chamomile or rose hip
  • Freeze some popsicles made from any of the above drinks

Then, keep your child in bed.  Hold him, read to him, pray with him and smile with confidence.

That’s how we treat fever.  The only thing that goes into his mouth is what you’ve concocted in the kitchen via your motherly hands. No suppression, no synthetic pills and no short term illness thrown into the future to bankrupt your child’s long term health.

Once you understand how important it is to allow the body to finish the good work of healing via fever, you’ll be girded for an important step in autonomy. And autonomy is a critical step in authentic family wellness.

So the next time the kids get high, instead of calling in the psychologists, celebrate with a tall glass of kombucha and know that your parenting skills have developed enough to allow your child to cure himself.

Let Your Kids Get High

Let Your Kids Get High

Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na)

Wait. Did you think I meant…….
No, no. Not that kind of high.
I‟m talking about a high fever. In fact, it‟s high time we all understood that getting a fever has phenomenal value in the short and long term.
This was known back in the late 1700‟s, when Dr. Samuel Hahnemann, the Father of Homeopathy, acknowledged that fever is an occasion.

Yes, fevers are uncomfortable, but the authentic goal is not to suppress the fever, but to keep your child hydrated with lots and lots of good quality fluids. Here are my guidelines:

Treating Fever Guidelines
· Offer kombucha
· Give your child water with fresh lemon and Bioplasma (a homeopathic mixture made by Hyland‟s)
· Hand over a cup of ice chips…flavored with lemon and raw honey
· Make some freshly squeezed fruit juice (at home) and dilute it with water
· Offer a warm cup of raw milk with a splash of vanilla

· Provide a tall glass of refreshing cold milk
· Have your child sip on a mug of bone broth
· Suggest a glass of kefir
· Mix some yogurt in water with a bit of raw honey
· Blend raw honey with a splash of vinegar in water
· Whip up some homemade ice cream with raw milk and cream
· Brew herbal teas, such as chamomile or rose hip
· Freeze some popsicles made from any of the above drinks

Then, keep your child in bed. Hold him, read to him, pray with him and smile with confidence.

That’s how we treat fever. The only thing that goes into his mouth is what you‟ve concocted in the kitchen via your motherly hands. No suppression, no synthetic pills and no short term illness thrown into the future to bankrupt your child‟s long term health.
Once you understand how important it is to allow the body to finish the good work of healing via fever, you‟ll be girded for an important step in autonomy. And autonomy is a critical step in authentic family wellness.

So the next time the kids get high, instead of calling in the psychologists, celebrate with a tall glass of kombucha and know that your parenting skills have developed enough to allow your child to cure himself.
